AI is incredibly sad. The ending just wont stop and it keeps getting worse and worse. Then finally, finally, something good happens, and it is in the most bittersweet, heart wrenching way.

Agree. Actually it hit me hard. This movie is about this kid whos biggest desire is to love his mom and never getting there

_____Cait posted...
I think Castaway is really sad.
RaulJenkins posted...
Cast Away is pretty sad (Wilson scene + the ending at the crossroads)

Seriously? I didn't seem sad to me, just bittersweet. The guy returned, thats happy already, and he saw this person again, that was also good.

The crossroads scene at the end seemed hopeful and cool. Like the beggining of the storm finally passing and the sight of a new life

Come and See

This was my first thought. It's probably the best film that I never want to see again.

It's hard to come up with an answer for this. I have to try and separate "made me sob the most" from saddest because they dont necessarily equate.

The French Canadian film Mommy could be a good answer. Everytime it picks you up it drops you right back on your face.

The Man Who Wasn't There, which may be my favorite Coen Brothers film, is pretty bleak. The "Ghost" monologue describes the way I feel when I'm at my worst.

I watch Arrival every now and then drunk just to masterbate my emotions.

The Fountain throws me into full chest heaving sobs, especially a certain scene.

Devastating movie. I think I prefer it to Grave of the Fireflies. I'm not sure which is saddest mind you, but the characters feel much more alive in that film, and the visuals are far more interesting.

It's the one that's being mentioned the most here.. I read the full synopsis bc don't think I could watch something as depressing.

But I don't get something

Why would they leave their aunt's house? Because of a fight, seriously? At least she had food, no? If she did, then the boy was wrong to put her sister in that situation

They were kids and the main character overestimated his wherewithal. All there really was to it. Part of the tragedy was that while a huge amount of their circumstances were entirely out of their control, but some of their problems were his fault. And as a result, his younger sister who was way too young to have any agency got caught up by that as well.

People sometimes make bad decisions in horrible situations that compound their problems.

Ohh so see I thought it was entirely out of their hands. When I read that they had been at some point in a place that has food and left then that changes. And yeah it is more tragic if he basically sabotaged things further, I was kinda taken aback by that.

In terms of stirring my emotions into genuine sadness, I think I've gotta give it to Inside Out.

In terms of bleakness, I wanna give a nod to Vagabond (80's French film).

No, but its sad moments pack enough of a punch that I can't think of a movie that would more easily bring me to tears (and not 'that's so sweet / epic' tears either).

A movie that's sad throughout would just register to me as 'bleak,' and would be easier to disassociate from - that's where Vagabond comes in.

To me it spoke to a bygone era, his father and mother enjoying time on the water. His father fishing and his mother being with his father. If I remember correctly his mother was mean and callous in her old age when he meets her on the way to the award ceremony. I feel like he's remembering his childhood and coming, finally, to terms that he will die. As his lost love says "there are no more wild strawberries". Idk, I haven't seen it in awhile but I feel the whole film is about existence and how superfluous life can be. And when he finally realizes meaning it's in the experiences we share with others and our common bonds. His daughter in law says he's a terrible person, but remember the scene at the gas station where the man thanks him for what he did (never mentioned what it was if I remember right). Idk, I'm tired as hell and may not be recalling everything but that's the gist of it. To me it's a really sad movie.

Interesting. I never thought of it like that. The music and the empty shot of the crossroads made me think, he's just as lost now in life as he was on the island.

But, for me it was United 93. I love that the actors are all unknowns. And the ending.......I mean, obviously we know what happens. But when it happens, and it immediately cuts to black and the credits hit.......man that was a gut punch regardless. I just felt a lot of remorse for a while after that.

For me it's Radio Flyer.

Anyone remember that movie?

I'm going off by memory but here's what I remember.

Tom Hanks plays a dad and tells his kids stories about his younger brother. He explains that his little brother would get abused by their step-father, but Tom Hank's character said he wouldn't get abused. It was probably because their step-dad saw the younger brother as weak. The brothers would talk about building a plane and getting away. They start working on turning a wagon into a plane. Then one day their step-dad beats the younger brother so bad that he gets sent to the hospital. Later in the movie, the younger brother recovers and Tom Hank's says he and his brother were able to successfully build their plane. His little brother flies away safely to another home and they actually show it to you. At the end of the movie Tom Hank's says to his kids something like "Yeah my brother got away... at least that's how I'll always remember it." Some people interpret that line as the little brother dying after being sent to the hospital.
