Out of the 4 visual novels Ive played, this is the best one.

Every time I see this topic it throws me for a loop because I bought the game for $20 something like 2 weeks after it got an English release.

This version has more content that was originally released as DLC/separate games, but it still feels bizarre to see.

Good game though, yes.

What makes it obnoxious for VNs?

I assume they mean an Ace Attorney or Danganronpa stlye VN.

Fata Morgana does not have any screen scanning, it's fully menu based.

Having to sit in front of a TV for a long session of reading, not being able to take it with me to read during downtime at work or on a plane, etc.

Ironically quite the opposite, I'm much more okay with playing that kind on home consoles (though I'd still prefer something more portable yeah)

I dunno if there's really a good way to explain what makes it good without spoiling it. I guess you could say it's about a man who learns about his own life by hearing tales of others throughout history and relating those lives to his own? That's just the premise, though. Mostly it's good because it has good writing and it's pretty compelling, continually getting better over time.

the fact that the premise is hard to describe without spoiling anything is v intriguing

The trailer for the game on Steam is a bit on the nose, but I think it does a reasonable job of communicating the tone and the type of game it is.

Edit: I recommend not reading the synopsis on the Steam page though...nothing major but I still think it provides a bit too much detail.
