It's set to go to sleep automatically after 20 mins. But it seems like almost half the time when I come back, it won't wake up and I have to press the power button. It then does a full power-on, and doesn't resume any of the stuff I had open. This happens both when I let it fall asleep, or put it to sleep from the start menu.

I see these in the event log when it happens, both appear right after the time I power on:
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/1/1/5/AARX-HAAD7fj.png
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/1/1/6/AARX-HAAD7fk.png
The first event mentions a shutdown event at 8:51, but I actually don't see a shutdown event at that time. That would have been around the time (or a few mins after) I put it to sleep though.

I'm on Win11, updated to 22H2 a couple days ago, but it was happening before this update as well. Before this, I only owned laptops, is there something I don't understand about power cycles? It's really annoying, any tips for diagnosing this?

For the record, Windows Sleep is HOT FLAMING DUMPSTER Garbage.

Don't bother with it.

Either leave your PC on all the time, & just turn off the monitor as needed.

Or Leave it off completely.

Having it hibernate / go to sleep is a recipe for disaster.

Windows doesn't know how to make Hibernate / Sleep work reliably & consistently.

It's best to disable Hibernate / Sleep entirely.

I agree with disabling hibernate/sleep

Because when it actually DOES work, it won't come out of sleep or crash on wake anyway

You got lucky.

Most people have ALOT of issues with Hibernate / Sleep.

It gets ALOT of bug tickets at MS.

Windows wasn't designed for Hibernate / Sleep at it's inception.

Windows has a ancient code base.

If it works for you, more power to you.

But if there is wonky behavior or crashes.

Don't say I didn't warn you.

It's kind of a crapshoot. Either your PC works fine with it or it doesn't. My current one sleeps fine and I can have it like that all day but a previous laptop would shutdown everytime

I haven't had Hibernate/Sleep work properly since like XP, maybe even before if it was even an option back then? It's always introduced issues. If it even will wake up without a crash or BSOD, I'll inexplicably find something such as my sound no longer working and have to restart anyway.

Something similar happened to me 4-5 years ago. That's why I don't use sleep or eco mode anymore. I just let my PC run endlessly (when I know I return to it in an hour or two), or turn it off completely when I don't intend to use it anymore for the day.

I have double backupped everything ever since.

with windows 10 or maybe even windows 8, windows replaced "shutdown" with "hibernate" but it wasn't clearly labelled, only people in the know knew. Ever since then, shutting down (by default) has been shit and usually rebooting fixes problems since a reboot does a full power down and then power on as opposed to the hibernate trash

You can disable "fast boot" or whatever to make shut down work like it should do again. Sleep mode theoretically works, but its unreliable for me. Sometimes the computer will wake itself up for some shitty reason. If its a laptop it will drain the batteries or overheat in my bag. I dont trust "sleep" ever since windows 7. give up on sleep. Just shut down the PC. if you want it to power on at a certain time, there is usually a setting in the BIOS to do that unless your PC is supremely cheap in which case it probably still does have the bios setting anyway

Just to pile on what everyone else is saying, either turn off the monitor, go retro and set a screensaver, or just shut the entire computer down.

Skimming the topic:

Windows Sleep Mode is a goddamned disaster. You don't need it. At all.

Set the monitor to turn off after X minutes and you are good to go.

For reference, it's under "Additional power settings" in the new settings menu, or under Power and Sleep Options in the classic control panel, under "Choose what the power buttons do", then uncheck "Turn on fast startup". If this is grayed out, an administrator needs to use the link at the top to "Change settings that are currently unavailable."

Alternatively, if you don't care about power usage, you can just hit Restart periodically and turn off sleep mode entirely. Restart is still a full memory flush even with fast boot on.

the money you save in electricity isn't worth the stress to your system powering up and down every day. Computers like to run.

The cost for downtime on my rig is something like 2-3 dollars a month. worth it.

This. Pop in a couple LED bulbs around your house to offset the energy consumption if you're that worried about it. I've have an enterprise grade server running 24/7 in my house for the last few years. My bill went up about ~$5 from it.

In terms of sleep mode: Turn Windows Modern Standby off if you can. It is up there with the biggest shit biscuits that MS has put out in quite awhile and likely the cause of the weird sleep behavior you've seen.

I have never experienced any of these sleep issues that everyone seems to have in this topic. 0_o It's always functioned like it was supposed to. The only issues I ever had in the past was the computer waking itself up on it's own, but I did digging and found the cause.

I forget what was causing it in my case since it was years ago when I was in college. I think disabling "Wake on LAN" is what fixed it for me. It was annoying when it was happening. Sometimes it would wake up seconds after it would go to sleep. Sometimes a couple minutes.

Windows thinks the update service is the most important fucking thing in the universe, and will wake a PC from sleep to install updates and reboot.

The best you can do is find whichever magic registry keys disable automatic updates this week, then look it up all over again when an a manual update either borks those keys or starts ignoring them in favor of completely different keys.

That's a function of Windows Modern Standby. Disable that to get rid of that behavior and regain proper S3 power mode for sleep.

I've saved more power changing every light-bulb in my home to LED's than worry about my PC idling when I'm not using it and just turning off the monitor.

I prefer running my PC 24/7/365; Always On Server Style
