Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, is, without a doubt, one of the best campaigns in the series. I played it through nearly every year since 2009, uncovering new things to love on the regular. It remains today an ambitious gamble, and perhaps the most complete feeling story despite eventually spawning two (also great, don't get me wrong) sequels. Prior Call of Duty campaigns were exciting if rote - simple objectives and unmemorable characters, with no real plot twists to speak of - they were, after all, already written by history. Modern Warfare was different. FPS games to this day still struggle in catching up to the captivating pacing and grand scale of Modern Warfare's campaign.

When I look back at MW now, I see a game clearly prying at the horrors of war. It doesn't outright decry and scold the player for partaking in violence, like a Spec Ops: The Line per se, but rather sees it as an unfortunate, necessary evil. Modern Warfare focuses on the weighty matters of leadership, political turmoil, and the boots-on-the-ground terror soldiers face head-on. Your playable characters are faceless, mute, practically just another head in the platoon and their sole duty is to complete a mission.

It's perfectly demonstrated in Call of Duty's greatest set-piece, one it has never really lived up to since but has eternally chased - the nuke. To this day it still feels as pulse-pounding, horrifying, and emotional as ever. Giving you control of your solider in the midst of radiation and burning agony, while looking up at the imposing mushroom cloud, still makes my skin crawl. It's a deliberate stake raiser, and the transitional screen right after, putting your character's name in columns and rows upon rows of other names is a small, yet staggering touch illustrating just how many lives a war like this can take.

Drama and horror is not all there is to the game though. There is plenty of humor & comradery with your troops, especially on the SAS side of things, which often take a more stealthy, quiet approach compared to the high-octane bombast of the Marines' campaign. Captain Price & Gaz are two timeless characters, constantly quipping at each other in their unique way, while at the same time offering valuable guidance and advice as needed. They are characters you feel connected to, their banter providing quiet relief from the pressures of war.

I want to just throw a special mention to the All Ghillied Up duology here too - STILL the best mission to ever appear in an FPS campaign before or since. A perfectly told, practically stand-alone vignette with insanely good atmosphere and environmental storytelling that perfectly captures the eeriness of an abandoned Pripyat, and the aftermath of Chernobyl. It's almost becoming too rare to see a perfectly crafted level like this in games. It's not the climax or culmination to a campaign, but instead just one perfect moment in a bigger scheme, and I respect it as such.

Which is, indeed, one of the best moments in gaming

You know I was going to give this a 7, but then I remembered how much I liked this mission. Modern Warfare was - unexpectedly, at least to me - really good shit.

7/10. A solid thriller, and one that really stands in stark contrast to what came later. Its kind of impossible to not view this as an anti-war tale despite the exciting set pieces. This is of course very different to the Tom Clancy-lite paranoia of the MW2-Blops2 popularity peak, or the almost fascistic propaganda and revisionism of some of the most recent titles. It also just works cinematically in terms of tension and stakes.

All Ghillied Up is great, though I think it has been surpassed by some stuff like highlights from DOOM 2016 and Titanfall 2. On which note dang, I should have done Titanfall 2, but there are two outstanding nominations for 497 and 498, 499 will be Xenoblade Chronicles 3 losing the recency rule, then were finishing on 500 with Elden Ring. Ah well.

Absolute masterpiece, and it's sad what the franchise has become after what they achieved here. "Aftermath" is still one of the most incredible pieces of horror in video games.

as for COD4, I definitely enjoyed it a lot. 2 and 4 were both bangers. Legit shocking moments in this game. A solid 7/10 from me.
