by FAR my two favorites today are both here together in match one, holy crap. among my fav from each set too. very tight match. dark atmospheric stuff is one of my favorite categories of vgm and silent heaven stands out quite a bit to me, especially once the metallic clanks at 1:32 hit oh my god. and stuart rynn is like if zanzan was made out of lego blocks, which in this case, makes for some absolutely astounding composition to my ears. what a match

Match 2 was close, went with GGG just cuz i appreciate the grandiose nature of it.

its opponent is actually pretty cool though. I don't hear castanets often, and hey--the vocals don't annoy me! So that's great. But yeah, there's probably no way in heck I'd vote against anything in the Super Mario Galaxy set. It's just too good.

I don't hate silent heaven. The second half of the song is neat.

These are probably super common midis in actuality, but that is two Heartland songs I have heard now that makes me harken back to the Mardek flash games. My brain associates some of these exact midis with those games as I was really into the Mardek series a long ass time ago.

Match 2 is hard. Abstaining for now so I can think about it some more.

3rd match is the hardest

SILENT HEAVEN is very atmospheric, and the second half especially does a pretty good job at setting a horror-type mood. Pretty interesting track. SEE THE SHREWS is pretty meh if I'm being honest. The melody feels sporadic and all over the place, and the instrumentation isn't my favorite either. So I'm gonna go with SILENT HEAVEN on this one.

Gusty Garden Galaxy is still a classic, and I'm sad it didn't retire in VGMC this year. There isn't much VGM out there that beats this one (even though GGG isn't my favorite from Galaxy). Great song. Suna Gin is very nice, although the vocalist isn't anything special. Really nice violin and acoustic guitar throughout. Still an easy vote for GGG.

Musouka is another nice one. I like the vocalist here more than Suna Gin's too. The instrumental is clearly what shines here though. STARS is fun, though it's too short. Pretty easy vote for Musouka.

Solid day today. First match is considerably weaker than the other two however.

SILENT HEAVEN is a much better atmospheric track than SEE THE SHREWS is a melodic track. Canned anxiety.

Suna Gin is a bit rough to vote against, but Gusty Garden Galaxy's a rough opponent (as are many tracks from Galaxy).

I have a preference for the more upbeat tempo and sound of the anime OP, but it works really nicely as a slower, emotional song as well!

if i wasn't stressed / scatterbrained in the nomination phase, i feel like i probably would have advised against silent heaven's inclusion. not at all out of dislike or malice - i actually like this song for what it does. it is so sinister and so dread inducing. i wish it picks up a little earlier but im picking at nits here. see the shrews more like see the sandshrews haha lmao - cus ive heard others compare this to pmd music. which i do see! para bellum was far from my favourite vgmc discovery, but it sinks in a lot cuz i didn't know what to expect. i didn't know anything about doom modding outside of a few "edgy" creepypasta type mods. now listening to this i really don't know what to expect from heartland! this one is really tough, it seems weird to say.

i am tired of talking about gusty garden galaxy. it is a good song. end of story. so i will talk about suna gin i wish the vocals were a little stronger. i found myself paying a lot more attention to the backing music in places, which is surprising. i usually find vocals to be extremely distracting. that being said, stk overall enjoyable! i don't remember the one aka song that did well in vgmc i listened to it before i started curating my vgm better so i don't even remember if i liked it this one definitely gets batter as i go. the big solo part with the guitar is SO SICK this match is pretty tough too!

i don't know anything about this game tbh, but musouka's vocalist and the cadence of her singing really reminds me of ending themes of anime i've watched when i was younger. i couldn't even pick out a song as an example. it just reminds me of that. and wow the instrumentals! while i wasn't bored of the singer at all, i still really wanted to hear more of the backing instruments. that little instrumental solo part is just so good too!! very good one of the best songs i've heard from this contest. wow the other song feels very nostalgic too. ddr music is a blind spot, my favourite song from that franchise being by another musician represented today, actually! this one is pretty good too though! it doesn't stick as well as its opponent, however. i'd love to hear a full version of it though, if it exists.

See the Shrews was a lot better than I'd expect it to be; as neat as Para Bellum was, I would have easily loved to have seen Shrews in VGMC! On the other hand, Silent Heaven is alright for what it is. Definitely more on the ambient side than I would usually prefer, but I appreciate the tone and especially those machine noises in the last third of the song.

Suna Gin is a real nice song, I really like the vocalist and her soft tone. Gusty Garden (for the uninformed) has always kinda been just there for me; I do like it and I can see why it'd be one of the popular tracks from the game, but I've never been in love with it and would easily prefer a handful of others to take the spotlight instead.

Man, as much as I like the high energy that DDR songs usually give me, there's something real special about Musouka - the singer whose voice is just as strong/enjoyable as the one from Suna Gin (if not more), the backing instruments, even the small instrumental bridge before the final chorus just all comes together wonderfully here. This is a magical new discovery for me, really happy to have heard it!
