this is great but it's not even on spotify...?

Unfortunately not. The duo disbanded and have ended any working relationship, including doing what's needed to get their two albums back onto Spotify or other streaming platforms. You can find the albums in playlists on YouTube, though, so they aren't completely gone. The singer is named Kelsey Bulkin and she has some solo stuff on Spotify that is recent, as well.

A late start to the morning with four songs, including a double drop from Raka:

==========================================

#295: ViANKIE - ONNNA (4:19):
https://youtu.be/76rMbG0Z2Hk

Nominator: UF8 [15/30 Remaining]

Initial Score: 69.14
Revised Score: 77.77
Final Score: 67.403

(First Reaction: A jazzy and sultry song that suits her voice perfectly. Nice, though it doesn't inspire much else to say about it.)

!I'm also more into jazzy lounge music than I was at the start of the year.

[Final Thoughts: A good showcase of her voice in a song that's perfect for her. I always like this, but my interest in this style of music varies a bit from month to month. This is a bit of a lowpoint for it, but I still enjoy it quite a bit.]

#294: JKT48 - Hanya Lihat ke Depan (Mae Shika Mukanee) (4:16):
https://open.spotify.com/track/2Hct7zFowPXXY3zaeQtFXl?si=090bb25501344c01

Nominator: @Raka_Putra [18/31 Remaining]

Initial Score: 51.05
Revised Score: 60.00
Final Score: 67.37 [Upgraded to 67.42]

(First Reaction: For being a song I've never heard before, this feels oddly familiar... it's like there's this half forgotten memory of some old children's song or cartoon that this is vaguely similar to and dredging up old memories that buried always sets me on edge because there's usually a good reason they were buried. Though I'm sure it's entirely within my imagination and this isn't actually like anything. *coughs* Either way, this song is definitely inspiring some strong emotions, so that's probably a good thing?)

I still can't identify what this song is almost making me remember. I get that it's an Idonesian cover of a Japanese song, but I'm not familiar with AKB48's original, so that shouldn't be it.

....Ehhh, let's just say I like this and come back to it another day.

[Final Thoughts: I don't know. It's so close to triggering a flashback to something that I kinda want to growl at the phone, but it's just different enough from what I'm trying to recall that the memory never actually triggers. There's something here, but I don't know what... it's probably not an important memory, but it's impossible to tell at this point.

I'm going to move this song up a pretty decent ways up the list because there are some strong feelings associated with this. I just... kinda... don't know what feelings or why...]

[Later: This joins Disney Home Video as a song that almost triggers something, but never strongly enough that I can even place what it's almost making me think of. Still, I'll give a minor boost for reorganization purposes.]

#293: Cats (original London recording) - Skimbleshanks: The Railway Cat (4:45):
https://open.spotify.com/track/5E1k5cPeBYezyRIq57MHAp?si=a560fbda9bd5416b

Nominator: @Raka_Putra [17/31 Remaining]

Initial Score: 58.84
Revised Score: 58.84
Final Score: 58.84 [Upgraded to 60.00] [Upgraded to 66.33] [Upgraded to 67.44]

(First Reaction: Not quite as good as the film version, but it's still one of the better Cats related songs.)

!The first time I saw this nominated, I got excited to see Skimbleshanks nominated & then disappointed to notice it wasn't the film version. Then, months later when I finally got around to re-ranking everything, I got excited & wondered how I could have possibly ranked Skimbleshanks so low... only to notice once again that it was the wrong version and somehow got disappointed all over again.

I mean, this is a fine recording & I like it well enough (there are certainly a large number of songs ranked below it), but it's not *quite* on the level of the rendition I prefer or doing enough things different to help it really stand on its own. Ultimately, "good but disappointing" kinda sums it up.

[Final Thoughts: That's a really mean way of putting it. It's a perfectly fine version of a good song.]

[Later: I suppose I'll add this to the Neo Clump as well. I do like it.]

[Later: A few extra points. This is faring much better now that I'm not as directly comparing it to the film version.]

[Later: And one more point.]

[Later: This feels like the most "cat-like" song from the musical.]

#292: Voltaire - When You're Evil [4:37]:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tn2FI-9v_zI

Nominator: paulg [12/52 Remaining]

Initial Score: 60.00
Revised Score: 60.002
Final Score: 64.80 [Upgraded to 67.48]

(First Reaction: It's definitely a fun, theatrical villain song and that's a very specific genre that typically plays quite well for me. I do enjoy this and all of the lyrics, but it's missing a certain flair or panache to elevate it to the highest tiers like The Bitter Suite IV & V or Snuff Out the Light. I'll start with this in the Clump of songs and try to work out exactly how much I like it at a later date.)

!Theatrical evil is typically something I like, yes, but this is missing a special spark to move it up to the highest tiers.

[Final Thoughts: I like this a bit more than the earlier scores indicated. It's still not top tier villainy, but it's fun and worth a few extra points.]

[Later: Still not quite my favorite, but I've definitely had this in my head a fair number of times over the year. Going to try 67 points?]

And six more to end the day, which will need to be across two posts. Featuring a double elimination from BlackDra90n:

====================

#291: LCD Soundsystem - Dance Yrself Clean (8:56):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ZNkPA_zUd4

Nominator: ZaziGuado [14/28 Remaining]

Initial Score: 63.33
Revised Score: 63.33
Final Score: 60.00 [Upgraded to 63.33] [Upgraded to 67.6304]

(First Reaction: I strongly dislike the first three minutes of the song, but then it transitions into Part 2 and I like everything from that point on. It's a bit of a rough start to get to the good stuff, but I think the second half is strong enough to solidly place this in the "I like this" tier even with the opening holding everything back a bit.)

!Definitely worth the wait to get to the instruments that I love. The first three minutes are still... not as bad as I made them out to be, but still a bit on the lower scoring side of the list. Thankfully, I really like what the instruments are doing once the song fully kicks in, so it's still firmly in the 60 point tier.

[Final Thoughts: A song that I still like, but am moving to the Neo Clump.]

[Later: That first three minutes is so "bleh", but I'm always surprised when we hit that transition and we get those deep buzzing sort of notes that I love. Going to move this one back up.]

[Later: And a decent upgrade to the score. I'm less bothered by the buildup in the first half the song than usual this morning.]

#290: Make Them Suffer feat. Courtney LaPlante - Contraband (4:09):
https://youtu.be/U6Xq_3sq69Q

Nominator: BlackDra90n [9/30 Remaining]

Initial Score: 50.19
Revised Score: 60.19
Final Score: 60.00 [Upgraded to 60.00000001] [Upgraded to 67.83]

(First Reaction: The choruses are fantastic, but the more intense metalcore verses that drive the song don't really do anything for me.)

The band's vocalist 'Sean Harmanis' says of this track "Lyrically, the song is about everything and nothing at the same time. It's about relationships with friends and family. But it's also a low-key political song, as well as an expression of the frustrations surrounding COVID and its impact on our lives, particularly as members of the music community."

...Alright then.

All snark about the lyrics meaning "everything and nothing" at the same time aside, I'm surprised this song was as low as it was. Half the song is fantastic, which you'll note is far more praise than anything at the 50.XX range is getting. I was going to say "I should listen to more Courtney Laplante", but I see she's the singer of Spiritbox, so you've already covered the "give me more songs featuring her for the sake of comparison" angle before I even got around to asking. And the verses ain't half-bad themselves. "They want you dead" is a rather bleak refrain, so I can't say I actually dislike the other parts of the song even. Going to just jump this song up exactly one whole tier by giving it a full 10 point upgrade.

[Final Thoughts: Moving this song down a few pegs to join the Neo Clump. I still like it, but I'm not sure I'd definitively take it over the songs of Neo Clump.]

[Later: I don't like the verses, but I kinda love the choruses. If a song is half 35 points & half 80 points, where do I drop it? An average would have this song eliminated before reaching this point and that's not right. Going to give this the smallest possible point increase to move it above the Neo Clump, but only *just*.]

[Later: Ehhhh.... I do kinda love that chorus... going to give this quite a few extra points for the moment.]

#289: Yaeji - Drink I'm Sippin On (3:21):
https://open.spotify.com/track/7pCirXrdJ4xN1Dqmm0DuAz?si=98ca67f4efe1441d

Nominator: Kateee [11/21 Remaining]

Initial Score: 60.00
Revised Score: 67.84
Final Score: 67.84

(First Reaction: I like the music, don't have any particular reaction to the lyrics, just going to add it to the all-consuming Clump for now.)

!Features the dark, low tones that I really enjoy.

[Final Thoughts: Definitely one of the best examples of what I mean by deep, low, bwoom-ing notes.]

[Later: I think this writeup is even shorter than the last one I said was the shortest.[

#288: Spiritbox - Circle With Me (3:53):
https://open.spotify.com/track/6I5zXzSDByTEmYZ7ePVQeB?si=ab6a200f600d419c

Nominator: BlackDra90n [8/30 Remaining]

Initial Score: 61.14
Revised Score: 62.74
Final Score: 61.41 [Upgraded to 64.173] [Upgraded to 67.90]

(First Reaction: Fantastic lyrics, but the harsher screaming towards the end doesn't fit with the emotions the earlier song was inspiring. It felt more suited for quiet contemplation than yelling, so it's quite jarring and borderline unpleasant when the song snaps me out of said contemplation to go be loud and angry. I still like it, but I do feel the end is holding it back somewhat.)

The opening verse is something I can really get behind:

Hands are frozen, feel no pain
I just want to hold the flame

Negative feedback loop
I'm spinning out of control
The sickly sweetness is crushing me

That is great. The very metal part towards the end of the song is not so great. I can get behind angry screaming, but this is angry screaming that is actively interfering with all the thoughts and emotions I had up to that point & it... doesn't exactly ruin the song--frankly, a lot of songs could be improved by suddenly screaming about the power of a dying sun & becoming God--but it is so antithetical to the parts that I love that I find it hard to fully enjoy the song. I like it, there's a lot of it that I love & I'd like the other parts in the context of other songs, but it doesn't mesh together perfectly for me.

[Final Songs: I like the parts of the song with the clean vocals.]

[Later: I'll go ahead and move this one up.[

[Later: I like those parts of the song enough to move this one up with a few extra points.]

#287: Bring Me the Horison ft. BABYMETAL - Kingslayer (3:41):
https://youtu.be/fKyXvNkGQKc

Nominator: Metalmind [14/25 Remaining]

Initial Score: 68.00
Revised Score: 93.3333
Final Score: 68.00

(First Reaction: [BONUS UNRELATED RANKING: Whenever I try to open this song, it plays "SSGKobe - Caddy (Official Video)" as an ad and somehow whenever I try to copy the YouTube link of Kingslayer, it keeps copying the link to the ad--to a point that I actually thought for a moment that you posted the wrong link, but no, it's just my absolute failure at copying things and YouTube making things harder than it needs to be. *coughs*

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_zdcptpz-Pg

So... I can't say I care about any of the lyrics in Caddy, at all, but I dig the sound. Leaning towards 64 points for the song? I actually like it a fair amount, though it's definitely something where I'd make a deliberate point of not paying attention to the lyrics and just enjoying the vibes. Okay, back to the song we're talking about after I manage to get the correct link copied...:)

Kingslayer was not part of last year's ranking, though it was one of the extra songs that was listened to and given a preliminary thought on:

An unexpected collaboration and I prefer BMtHs singer when hes not trying to do metal yelling, but i like this. At least 65 points-ish, with more interest in hearing it again at a later date than that score implies.

So, I was kinda setting up for this to be nominated, seeing as I practically asked to hear it again. I'm impressed by how natural Su-metal's English vocals are and how she can switch between English & Japanese effortlessly, I'd say she's easily the best part of this song, Going to raise the score a bit from my very early prediction, take it up to 68 points even.)

!How in the world was this song ever so low?? BMtH is my current favorite band and I'm on a pretty big metalcore kick at the moment... this may not be my favorite song of theirs*, but a second-rate BMtH song is still something I totally love. And I'm way, way more in the mood for angered yelling and screaming, so I think picking a track with more "metal yelling" was ultimately a good idea in the long run.... not quite at the time you actually nominated it, but by the time we got further into the ranking and my tastes shifted to actively wanting more of this.

Babymetal's performance here is fine. They're not exactly the group I'm here for, but they do a fine job and I have no complaints about their half of the song.

*Not sure what my favorite BMtH song is, to be quite honest. Doomed & Happy Song are way up there, but I also got into Avalanche earlier this year (in spite of it having a rather low score at the ranking because it wasn't what I wanted at the time) and I've been playing 1x1 on an endless loop for a while... so quite a few good options for best song.

[Final Thoughts: This is something that I absolutely love when I'm in the mood for it... I'm just not always in the mood for it. Like now, for instance.]

[Later: Sorry; this song was at the top of the list during a period where my playlist was all yelling all the time, but it's a bit harsher than I'm looking for at this exact moment.]

#286: FireFallsMusic (arr. Yourvinished) - Through the Malachite Forest (2:37):

Nominator: NFUN: [9/31 Remaining]

Initial Score: 63.47
Revised Score: 63.47
Final Score: 63.47 [Upgraded to 68.03]

(First Reaction: It's a very nice song (yes, I've said that way too often this ranking, I'll worry about getting a more robust vocabulary another day) and I'm just going to leave this at that for tonight.)

!To no one's surprise, I'll probably leave it at that forever. Still a very nice song though.

[Final Thoughts: Nice, relaxing "mild adventure" theme. Not very exciting, but I don't do excitement.[

[Later: Ooh, I like this one quite a bit today. Moving this up four and a half points-ish.]

#456:

I've had Deja Vu (Classical) stuck in my head all day, so I'm going to retroactively set that one to... about 72.13 points.

List resumes with a new #286th place. [EDIT: Seven] songs to start with, including two from BlackDra90n:

============================

#286: Linkin Park - Papercut (3:04):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1lnJ79dzXD8&list=PLSZnrWBCBT3ng1xEWEkXC91StoZjD8BP3&index=1

Nominator: Mega_Mana [15/38 Remaining]

Initial Score: 74.00
Revised Score: 60.00
Final Score: 68.17

(First Reaction: I like Linkin Park and this is one of the most Linkin Park songs I've heard. Mental illness, dissociation, darkness/absence of light; there's a lot that appeals to me in the lyrics. It doesn't present any new facets of the band or stand out as a very unique track, but it's a group I like doing the things I like them for, so that's cool.)

I still like the song, but not remotely as much as the first time around. I'm drawn to feelings of dissociation for *completely normal reasons* and this song goes pretty hard on that end:

But I know just what it feels like
To have a voice in the back of my head

Like a face that I hold inside
A face that awakes when I close my eyes
A face watches every time I lie
A face that laughs every time I fall

Yep, that's the stuff alright. But I think I may have let my bias towards the lyrics get in the way of accurately ranking the song because, while I love the idea, this feels more like a song that I "like" rather than "like like" if you get what I mean. Mike's verses are performed in such a rush that I lack the time to really process or fully enjoy the lyrics that I'm here for and it's like... "yes, I do like this song, but if we dialed things back a bit then I would definitely like it a lot more" which is very much a 60's type of writeup than a 70's one.

[Final Thoughts:

The sun goes down
I feel the light betray me

Now that is a bridge I can get behind. I... don't know if I want to move it all the way back up to the 70 point tier, but let's try the very high 60's and revisit this at a later date.]

============================

-

====================

#285: Seabear - I Sing, I Swim (3:39):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O1RjcPr1W3I

Nominator: ZaziGuado [13/28 Remaining]

Initial Score: 60.86
Revised Score: 61.03
Final Score: 61.15 [Upgraded to 66.11] [Upgraded to 68.273]

(First Reaction:

I'm a black cloud
Sending lightning to the ground

I know it's a metaphor and a sadly relatable one, but it's fun to imagine him as an otherkin that identifies as a literal dark cloud. I wonder what the correct terminology is for someone with that -kin type? I can't say I've met anyone like that, or even read about them for that matter. I'm sure they exist.

...oh yes, the song is nice, obviously. Don't mind me getting fixated on willfully misinterpreting one specific lyric, I do that sort of thing a lot.)

!*continues willfully misinterpreting all of existence*

[Final Thoughts: I like this. For the wrong reasons, obviously, but that's never stopped me before.]

[Later: This song is hitting me unexpectedly hard tonight for *reasons*. I think I'll add a few more points to this... I'm not quite ready to jump it up an entire tier, but it deserves to be much closer to that 70 point mark than it currently is at the very least.]

[Later: Let's add a few more points to this song.]

====================

-

=========================================

#284: ERRA - Divisionary (3:42)
https://youtu.be/rpFl-YYw5BE

Nominator: BlackDra90n [7/30 Remaining]

Initial Score: 74.00
Revised Score: 90.00
Final Score: 68.291

(First Impression:
Lost and alone in a space void of color
I'm here, breathing salt, ocean grave
Going under, all we are is lost

Okay, now this topic is going places, that is what I'm looking for. The main singer is pretty great, the more "metal growl-y" singer is a good compliment to the main vocals, good band, fantastic outro as quoted above. I have nothing bad to say about this track.)

!...One wonders how this song could be exactly what I wanted and only score 74 points, but whatever, it has a much more appropriate score now. This is definitely the type of metal song htat I'm into at this exact moment.

[Final Thoughts: A nice outro with those lyrics I quoted and most of the lyrics are clean & melodic, but somehow I'm not exactly feeling this track the way I used to... I mean, I like it, obviously--it's a very approachable type of metal which is doing things I like in a pleasing way--but it feels a few tiers below the top 40 it was sitting at.]

[Later: I'm sorry; once again, this is another song that I loved when I was in a specific state of mind that I'm just not in right now. So while I remember why I loved the song, I'm just not clicking with it as much as I did in the past.]

=========================================

-

============================

#283: The Dear Hunter - The Revival (5:00):
https://open.spotify.com/track/6iNwukPXmB4tLrnC07FRSz?si=d241df39af96406d

Nominator: NBIceman [13/31 Remaining]

Initial Score: 78.7001
Revised Score: 86.14
Final Score: 68.301

(First Reaction: Pimp Priest always has the best song. I could live without The Boy's verse, but it is properly remorseful and something I'd normally like if it weren't interrupting this specific song, so even that verse is pretty good.)

!Still not as into Hunter's portion of the song, but that's only a brief interlude in the song and the rest of it is some of the band's best work.

[Final Thoughts: In an odd way, it's kinda of nice to see the Pimp Priest working his Pimp job. He seems to be spend far more time on the corrupt preacher aspect of his dual careers. Aaanyhow, I do like this track--theatrical villainy from a character that I already like, it certainly hits the right notes. I'm just not in love with it like I was before... you know how it is, quite a few songs wind up dropping over the course of the year.]

[Later: I do still enjoy this quite a bit, but I don't quite want to move it back up a tier; it does do everything right--very theatrical, fun, villainous, steeped in regret, and by a band that I quite enjoy... but I'm just not in love with it these days.]

Nominator: BlackDra90n [6/30 Remaining]

Initial Score: 63.26
Revised Score: 72.38
Final Score: 68.32

(First Reaction: *stares blankly at the screen for seven minutes trying to think of even one word to explain why she likes the song*

...Well, whatever. "I like this" is as fair a first reaction as anything else.)

!...I still have no explanations on this, but I'm moving it up a tier because now "I really like this" with no explanation.

[Final Thoughts: Some of the cleanest vocals on the album, alongside some "quiet screaming" which is something I'm looking for (as I've mentioned before)... until the outro which is the loud sort of screaming, but it was quite nice until that point.]

#281: Velvet Chain - Treason (4:15):
https://open.spotify.com/track/1lTbBBRkPcZRbUmXfYa8if?si=qsxLEjcsR8WMs5S3PquEiw

Nominator: Jesse Custer [12/29 Remaining]

Initial Score: 68.40
Revised Score: 68.40
FInal Score: 68.40

(First Reaction: This song inspires quiet, personal introspection. I'm just going to go quietly think about things for a bit, which doesn't make a very good writeup, but I enjoyed it & it made me think/feel things, which I'd like to believe is enough of a compliment for a first reaction.)

!Song still makes me want to quietly reflect on things, possibly with a stiff drink in hand. Not that I drink, but this feels like a song that would go well with one.

[Final Thoughts: Not something I want to publicly discuss, but I do like it quite a bit.]

#280: Death Grips - Get Got (2:51):
https://youtu.be/SW9H1b7zXUY

Nominator: Kateee [10/21 Remaining]

Initial Score: 70.00
Revised Score: 72.00
Final Score: 68.44

(First Reaction: I don't know what type of song I was expecting, but this complex mind-bending rapid-fire lyrical story (which seems to be told in reverse order) certainly wasn't it, I mean that in a great way, anything that manages to leave me in stunned silence is pretty good by default, but the complexity of the song and the inexplicably entrancing background music makes it... *rolls a random adjective generator* astonishing.

Huh, I was expecting a gag there, but that's actually a rather fitting word for it. Thank you, random adjective generator!)

!Great storytelling, song does a good job at standing out when compared to others.

[Final Thoughts: I was initially blown away by how unexpected this was, but now that I have the story memorized, it's not quite as enchanting--I still like it and it's a fantastic song, but it might possibly fit better just below the 70 point marker instead of just past it.]

[Later: A very memorable and compelling method of storytelling. Quite nice.]

Damn, I don't check the topic for like a day and I lose four songs.

Contraband: Courtney is great and is honestly one of the reasons why I nominated the song, but the song as a whole is awesome anyways. The chorus is interesting because the female vocalist of MTS was caught up in some stuff last year and was kicked out of the band. She was replaced with another vocalist who sounds noticably different so Contraband doesn't sound the same anymore.

Circle With Me: This is probably one of my favourite songs on the album. I actually love the build up to the screaming at the end. It's a nice release to the song imo but I get why you'd not like it.

Kingslayer: I didn't nominate this but BMTH is great and I'm glad that you still like them so much. Kingslayer is just such an interesting song too which the mix of vocal styles.

Divisionary: I'm actually very surprised that this made it this far, especially since at one point it was at 90 points. I like the song a lot but the harsh vocals typically turn off a lot of people I think.

Halcyon: Honestly I don't have much to say either. It's not a bad track but it doesn't really stand out to me in the album either.

Kingslayer is great since it harkens back to their earlier eras which is what I'm more a fan of, but taking their knowledge of their experimentation with their later eras. Post Human Survival Horror in general excels at that, it doesn't seem like their next project in the Post Human series is gonna do quite the same thing but at least this EP is still a thing.

There Is a Hell is still such a great album, damn. And 10 year anniversary of Sempiternal, which is the album I technically started on with them even if There is a Hell is my fav from them.

And commenting on some of my past elims

People Verses actually took me a few listens to really get into. At first I was like "oh this is good because it's ETID so obviously it's good, but not one of my standouts from the album." And then I got more into the lyrics and the ending section with "there's more to life than anyone allows you", which I love how it's a sort of fakeout breakdown? Like leading up to it it sounds like it might go into a breakdown/harder section, but they go for a softer landing that I actually think is seriously awesome. I actually have a shirt from them (one of I think 5 shirts I have from them?) that has the lyrics "The well behaved will fill the graves" with a bunch of anthropomorphic rats rebelling against anthropomorphic rat cops. It's super sick. And I mean, the whole "Never trust a man" sections I love as well with how apt it is and how upset it'll make some of the more sensitive alpha-type males.

Hostile Architecture, Keith really goes for some cool vocal inflections. The whole "I know, I know, I know you hate to hear it", the "I'm sorry, I'm sorry I'm sorry", it's just fantastic what he does. And some choice lines like "There's too many ghosts, not nearly enough spirit", "Take my hand, let me teach you about regret", "What do you like better? I will wear it for you/What do you know better? I'll make it the truth".....I obviously could keep going on and on with his lyrics which you already know and appreciate. And the whole ending section in general, the absolute catharsis of just letting it all out. Woof.

Cool to see Sorry Bro I Love You back in! Curious to see how much higher it'll go! Of the Dorian Elctra songs left, I'm kind of surprised Give Great Thanks is still in but I appreciate it! It's a standout from the album for me. And the music video for it is quite something, par for the course for Dorian.

So it shouldn't be a surprise that Give Great Thanks has at least 70 points!

...Though now I'm wondering what other songs I spoiled getting high marks. I know I also mentioned Pink Lemonade & the remaining Gustav Holst song in positive terms.

In the other direction, I also implied the Tom Nook song was going to get a low score, but that one obviously got moved up considerably since we still haven't seen it.

I should probably listen to that album again sometime... I was briefly super into Sempiternal; I *almost* tried nominating that one for Rank the Tracks, but decided at the last minute that it would be a bit too controversial even if it couldn't possibly win.

Four songs coming up, but I think I want to use another post to start them as it would be difficult to find a writeup in this post.

As an advance warning, song #278 kinda escapes its writeup & always confuses me whenever I scroll past it:

===================

#279: Dr.Octagon - Blue Flowers (3.15):

Nominator: Xtlm [6/13 Remaining]

Initial Score: 60.00
Revised Score: 63.44
Final Score: 68.446

(First Reaction: Oh hey, I remember this song from last year. Wasn't part of an official ranking, so it had to have been from the post-ranking listening sessions...

Ohh, Kool Keith (aka.Dr. Dooom, Dr. Octagon, and...many other names), that explains things. I at least remember him. This isnt really my favorite rap song, but I have no objections to it--genre I need more exposure to and decent enough lyrics, probably high 50s that gets moved up to low 60s on a "I should be encouraging this type of nomination" basis.

Sounds about right. It's a vast improvement from "I Run Rap" and I'm intrigued by the nonsensical story of a homicidal time-traveling alien gynecologist, though the song is not quite one of my favorite examples of the genre. I like it.)

!Intriguing song and that refrain of "blue flowers" is very memorable... to a point that I hear it in my head every time I see a blue flower in anything. I guess that's worth some extra points, maybe?

[Final Thoughts: One of the most memorable songs from the topic. Have a few extra points.]

I would not.)

======= ===================================

....Is the extra space in the dividing line symbolic of anything?

Is it?

You're the one who added it.

Perhaps it's symbolic of the fact that the writeup has escaped its confines. It broke through a hole in the barrier and now it's free! Like a bird!

I'd give you credit for the joke, but we both know that started as a typo.

If you know it's a typo then why did you ask if it meant anything?

It did make you type somethinginstead of leaving the writeup at "beauty and what not"

True, but if we're just having an imaginary conversation in our heads, is it actually a writeup? I don't think either of us has been talking about the song for quite a while.

When have you ever stayed on topic?

...Harsh, but fair.

I don't suppose you have any idea how this all ends?

Nuclear hellfire, I imagine.

I meant the writeup.

So did I, Lise.

...That Simpsons reference doesn't even work in this context.

What context?!

Are you... are you trying to shout rhetorical questions at a voice in your head via text?

Best not to think about it too much.

*****************************************************

Okay, so here's where we start commenting on the second listen of the song...

Don't say it...

Yeah, I'm leaving the writeup at "beauty and whatnot."

*heavy sigh*

[Final Thoughts: Having a writeup escape like that is going to be very confusing when trying to organize things.]

Initial Score: 48.81
Revised Score: 62.00

(First Reaction: I can't find anything I want to say about more unremarkable battle themes.)

*blinks*

Is the new upload I have to use for this song like really high quality compared to the link you gave originally or something? Because my reaction to this song has undergone a very drastic transition? I expected to give another lecture on the "I do not like RPG battle themes" topic, but this is suddenly good? Like 60 points good because I actually like this? Who took my generic battle themes and put actual music in their place?? And why is my voice broken and only able to speak in questioning tones???

*after taking a break to get back to a more "normal" headspace*

Right, where was I? ...No, don't start that again, bad question mark! Bad!

Okay, so I don't really know why I like this song, but I do. It's... likable. It is a very likable attempt at... actually, are these battle themes? Because there's Battle Themes and BT Vers, and I'm not clear if this song just has approximately an infinite number of battle themes or if BT means something other than Battle Theme. Whatever, it's a likable something-or-other, and that's good enough.

#276: TRF - EZ DO DANCE (4:26):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LKEWlU4rkxc

Nominator: Handsomeboy [14/31 Remaining]

Initial Score: 50.50
Revised Score: 76.14
Final Score: 68.6003

(First Reaction: I think I like this a little bit, maybe, possibly, but not strongly enough that I'll commit to that statement.)

...Man, that first reaction is so abysmal I want to REDACT that insipid sentence in a vain attempt to hide how stupid, short, and inaccurate it was. I really like this song at this exact moment and I'm jumping it up two and a half tiers immediately. Seriously, I actually highly enjoy the female singer on this track, the thumping is far more tolerable than usual for dance music, and some of these lyrics are quite literally the type of thing I love:

https://carlenne.livejournal.com/95810.html

From midnight time, at this place
Shed all the lies with companions that share the same destination
Empty and aimless, as you dance are you running away from somewhere?
Are you disappearing? Youre so bright its mysterious
Were fallen angels telling each other alluring dreams, licking one anothers wounds

Pretty sure I've repeatedly praised the night, abandoning lies and disguises, running away from things, and fallen angels so often that just about anyone could look at this translation and be all "oh yeah, Raetsel's gonna be throwing a bunch of points at this song". The only thing I can think of is that I switched to a Spotify link for the relisten--I already had the app open and it was faster to find the song there than find the nominated upload---and maybe the audio quality is more pleasing there than on YouTube. At least, I'm going to pretend that that's the reason, because I am irrationally angry at how low the first score was and wish to live in a timeline where I had something approaching a valid reason for that abomination of a score/"reaction".

...Well, either way, great song, really enjoy it, and II officially reject anything negative I ever said about it. I wouldn't say that I love the song yet, so I'm thinking mid-to-high 70's for the score instead of the 80's or 90's, but still, great song.

*checks*

....

........okay, yeah, I think the Spotify version has a noteably different sound mix. The pulsing and thumping dance beat sounds much softer here:

https://open.spotify.com/track/5kPR8N56it5Bxtx325MB4M?si=17adf66a469345ca

Well... this song is definitely "TRF - EZ DO DANCE" and the same length as the nominated song, so I'm just going to cheat and use this link anyway.

[Final Thoughts: Tonight I actually prefer the more pronounced beat from the YouTube link, go figure. I'm not quite as into either version of the song as much as I was last time, but it's still WAY beyond the 50.50 "I do not care" level this song was somehow trapped on. Dance music that's tame enough for me to enjoy it, combined with some really good lyrics with non-human metaphors make this an easy song to like.]

[Later: The chorus is quite catchy and memorable.]

#275: Every Time I Die - Dark Distance (2:54):

Nominator: Bane [13*/38 Remaining]

Initial Score: 53.08
Revised Score: 70.00
Final Score: 68.76

(First Reaction: I always enjoy reading his explanations for his songs:

I wrote this in 2019 or maybe even 2018, when I was realizing where I wanted the record to go. I knew that I had an obligation to use my platform for positive things because the world is not a pretty place right now. So, I just had this idea that the whole thing needs to be reset. Pull out the Nintendo game, blow on it, put it back in. And what resets civilization? Historically speaking, a plague does that. So, I started by summoning a plague and then COVID happened. I apologize for that.

As usual, it's still a bit too metalcore of a song for me, but I'm in an angry mood lately so I do find myself enjoying this song somewhat.)

Yeah, I'm in the mood for this type of anger right now. End of writeup.

[Final Thoughts: I do like this quite a bit, but it does repeat "Spare only the ones I love" a few more times than I'd like... good anger to the song with heavier & grungier feel to the music that I dig, so I do like this. Just not quite sure I still want it up at the next tier.]

#274: Maudlin of the Well - Geography (5:01):

Nominator: Ark [6/17 Remaining]

Initial Score: 68.94
Revised Score: 69.37
Final Score: 68.94

(First Reaction: A haunting and beautiful song with lyrics that I'm sure would be quite traumatizing if I understood them.)

!Still can't say I really "get" the story here, but it's a great prog rock song.

[Final Thoughts: I may want to look into a few of this band's other songs later. Seems like they're probably pretty good.]

[Later: Far more competition for shortest writeup at this tier than I thought.]

#273: Diablo Swing Orchestra - Snake Oil Baptism [4:40]:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FYsywfOsuN8&list=PLbqs-W3v0JokCip1yCvbDS5Diki_yhvvC&index=9

Nominator: CJones [3/18 Remaining]

Initial Score: 60.00
Revised Score: 64.38
Final Score: 64.38 [Upgraded to 69.44]

(First Reaction: It's not an absolute masterpiece like The Dear Hunter's "Bitter Suite IV &V", but this has a similar energy to The Pimp/Priest's songs that I enjoy. Why do the voices in the last part seem so quiet & distant though? It feels like something's off with the audio--which I know is a common complaint on the album, but this is the first track where it actually sounded wrong to me.)

!Twisted hard rocking gospel music. Quite an enjoyable song, I like it, but the audio mixing on that outro still feels off to me... it's not enough to ruin the song, but it feels like a baffling design choice.

[Final Thoughts: Yeah, definitely the sort of song I like, though that outro is... a thing.]

[Later: Not quite ready to move this up a tier, but I'm going to move it close to the line.]

====================

#272: Tsunomaki Watame ft. Calliope Mori - Cloudy Sheep (4:05):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGun2cWbPEM

Nominator: Handsomeboy [14/31 Remaining]

Initial Score: 100
Revised Score: 97.93
Final Score: 65.80 [Upgraded to 69.445]

(First Reaction: Part of me feels like I should have this song in the mid-90s, but it's inspiring some fairly strong emotions and I wish to contemplate having this song in first place for a while.)

!Definitely a fantastic, top-tier song.

[Final Thoughts: I remember how much I loved this song and have been looking forward to listening to this again for quite a while, but I'm really not getting a lot from this song tonight. It's easy to see why I was drawn to it: Non-human singer, lyrics about treasuring the memories of a dead relationship, a fine performance from Mori who tends to get decent scores at the very least,, a catchy beat, references to rain.. it's a song that has everything.

And yet, when I compare this to the three or four songs currently in contention for first place, this track really doesn't resonate that strongly. Even the "I like this" tier has its fair share of competition that I might take over this. So... while I remember how strongly I adored it, I'm afraid I need to drop this back down to the middle of the 60's. We'll see if I recapture any of that magic by the time it's time to eliminate it.]

[Later: I still don't love this anywhere near as much as I did the first two times, but I think I'm enjoying it more than anything around this level. Going to move it back up a bit to the 69 point area.]

[Later: Another song that I'm sorry to eliminate because I remember how strongly I loved it, but I just can't quite recapture that magic.]

#271: Saori Kobayashi - Eternal Glacies (3:57):

Nominator: NFUN: [8/31 Remaining]

Initial Score: 56.56
Revised Score: 67.49
Final Score: 69.483

(First Reaction: Feels like a song for a montage of someone climbing a snowcapped mountain as part of some journey. Somewhat harsh, but also hopeful as the character looks forward to...whatever goal they're pursuing.)

!Wow, this song is so much better than most (alll?) of the songs that were grouped around it. After all the mid-50's songs that deserve to be in the mid-50's, this song is an overwhelming breath of fresh air that completely destroys them. I'm moving this up more than 10 points immediately.

[FInal Thoughts: A dramatic journey filled with hope. This is way, way beyond what that dismal initial score indicated.]

(First Reaction: I wish to hear another song by this artist. Right now, in fact.

*proceeds to click around the album for a bit*

Ah, "Alike"--I think that's the song I was looking for. [I don't know the band, but I was positive that they would have something I'd be very drawn towards and this feels like the hypothetical song I was hunting for.[ I'm not really glomping onto Modern Drift like I should, I feel like it's missing one lyric for me to become overly fixated on. Alike definitely has one:

The calming voice that kept me safe
It may be stupid, but it is true

The flood is gone and the trouble stays

Nevermind why I'm drawn to that part of the song, the important thing is that I am drawn to it... I'm not completely enamored with the song, but I think Alike is probably in the mid-70s. Modern Drift is a fine song and I apparently like whoever this is (they kinda remind me of Sufjan Stevens, but not really--"they remind me of the way the nominated Sufjan Stevens song made me feel a few years ago", now that's an accurate--if wordy--sentence) since I don't exactly go hunting for more songs from just any artist that gets nominated, but it's missing that one hook which I find in Alike.

...still, Modern Drift has to end up on the positive side of the score equations because I do like it some amount.)

!I'm not super into this song, but it showcases enough potential that I enjoy it a fair amount & it inspires me to check out more of their work.

[Final Thoughts: I'm' afraid I don't have anything to really say about the song that was actually nominated here. I kinda like it and it's rather pleasing, with a performance that says "this is an artist that almost assuredly has a song that I completely love somewhere in their discography", but this isn't quite that performance.]

[Later" A minor boost to raise this up somewhat.]

[Later: Okay, now I like this.[

[Later: And a few extra points.]

[Later: Had this stuck in my head lately, so a few more points.]

#268: Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit - Sad But True (4:30):
https://youtu.be/LeeWwY2IpcM

Nominator: Snake [11/32 Remaining]

Initial Score: 45.74
Revised Score: 44.04
Final Score: 45.74 [Upgraded to 52.48] [Upgraded to 52.6092] [Upgraded to 52.71] [Upgraded to 56.39] [Upgraded to 61.13] [Upgraded to 64.433] [Upgraded to 69.78]

(First Reaction: Huh. I love the idea of the song and the vagueness of the lyrics leaves the song open to any number of interpretations, most of which work really well for me. Unfortunately, the song itself feels a bit dull to me... which isn't his fault, it's certainly not any more enthralling when Metallica performed it. It just comes off almost a bit mononotous and lacking a strong hook to really pull me in, but there's a great story here & I dig the idea of country covers of metal songs. Not really something I'd go back to often, but I appreciate you taking a chance on it.)

Very nice lyrics that can apply to just about anything and I kinda dig all of the interpretations. Religion, depression, drugs, life in general, the past & future, it means whatever you need it to mean and I think that's impressive. There's a fine line between lyrics that are open to a variety of interpretations and lyrics that are just incomprehensible, and this song quite splendidly accomplishes what it wanted to. I'm just not entirely sold on either the original performance or this country version of it.

I'm not entirely sure what I want from the song, but looking around, I think the St. Vincent version is the closest to whatever it is:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K0K9xypNQVU

The slight distorrtion on her vocals give it a vaguely alien quality, making it feel like a Venom symbiote type song. That's a fun darkness and not one that's easy to achieve musically, so I find it fairly intriguing.... I'd say the St. Vincent is probably a 60 point song? It's still not quite what I'm after, but it's fun and mysterious in a way other versions aren't.

...oh hey, that's probably it! The lyrics are vague and mysterious, but none of the other artists try to convey a sense of mystery in the music itself. There's a bit of a disconnect between lyric and performance, and I wish the song itself did something abnormal--create the sense of "you don't quite understand what the song is even doing" to complement the lyrics.

[Final Thoughts: St. Vincent >> Jason Isbell >>> Metallica.]

[Later: Actually I think I'm leaning a bit positive on this track right now. I was set to eliminate this, but it's getting a *slight* boost to the next level. Not an overwhelmingly large boost, but enough to clearly say that "yeah, this isn't a bad countrified version of the song".]

[Still Later: Giving this a few more extra points because I feel like it.]

[More Later: Ditto.]

[And Later: I'm starting to kinda like this one, actually.]

[And Also Later: This song is definitely growing on me. Going to move it up a tier.]

[And And And: A few more points to this one.]

[And And And And And And And: ...Going to try 69 points for this.]

Wow it really hurts to drop all the way from 100!
This is probably one of the earlier songs with both a Japanese and English Vtuber. Recently they also did a pair which I guess should be listened to in succession.

missed that this one went out a while back oops

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hif-WDuzuTs there was also this upload if you wanted a link with the original video

main reason i picked it was because i'd noticed a few covers of this song at the time and this one had by far the most views. considering it has nearly 10mil on bilibili now and this reupload also has over 600k, it probably still does tbh. but yeah i didn't properly check the name or anything like that
