Garland appointed a special counsel to oversee the Trump investigations into MAL and 1/6 citing potential conflict of interest appearance with Trump's announcement to run along with Biden's stated intention to run.

Special counsel is Jack Smith. He was the chief prosecutor at The Hague investigating war crimes in Kosovo and DOJ's former public integrity chief who once secured the conviction of a CIA official charged with "illegally disclosing national defense information and obstructing justice."

So he seems extremely qualified for this, but on the other hand Mueller seemed fairly qualified too so I can't completely shake the feeling this is "It's Mueller Time" 2.0. Smith has been given authority to prosecute however, so that's promising.

I could absolutely see a conviction firing up his base. They will see it as unfair targeting of Trump by "the swamp" and proof that they fear Trump. That MAGA needs to rally together to defend their hero from the big gov conspiracy!

I think a conviction specifically for national security-related crimes would hurt him on the balance. A lot of self-proclaimed moderates (lol) hold their nose and vote for Trump, and while they're fine with things like massive illegal wars and widespread discrimination, they would be upset by Trump stealing America's secrets.

Which is why I think it kills him in the general and why Rs won't risk it. Cause he can win the primary without moderates if his base is fired up enough.

Yeah, that's right. It's just that all of his tweets had been about "stopping the steal" for the last few months of its existence so it's kinda weird to see it all again two years later.

(I do believe a few of the most egregious tweets were deleted pre-ban; like I don't see the "this is what happens when you steal a sacred election" one)

His 89 million followers are gone though. I wonder if Twitter is able to auto-restore those.

There are some things that the GOP House wanted to do but may not have the votes for now with the slim majority they have - impeaching Biden is probably something they lack the votes for now for example, a debt ceiling crisis is a less likely too.

But the one thing that absolutely was going to happen under a GOP House, even if it was 218-217, was ending the 1/6 Committee. Like it was gone the moment the GOP was projected to regain the majority. They absolutely will not keep it functioning. DOJ's investigation will continue but the House's will end in January.

I forget (want to say it is not such a vote though), but honestly, I think there might be the votes for a discharge petition to bypass him if it truly comes down to it. (Discharge petition allowing you to bypass the Speaker and force a vote if you get a majority of members to sign onto it)

Scary to think it comes down to that given how rare they are (though it was used somewhat recently IIRC)

Make no mistake, I'm sure they still try to play hardball with it regardless of how irresponsible that is, but I do think there's a chance you could get a couple Republicans (if only because business donors pressure them) to go for a discharge and vote.

Wouldn't they need to get rid of the filibuster for that? Protecting the filibuster is a top tier priority

Sounds like Elon is going to use substantially more censorship than he would be allowed if the 1st Amendment applied to him. After all, SCOTUS held 8-1 that the WBC has the right to protest funerals by saying horrible things about the deceased.
