Russia still views the Soviet defeat of Germany as the greatest moment in their country's history and so it's their go-to rhetoric for justifying their campaign of rape and terror against Ukrainian civilians.

It's a massive exaggeration but Ukraine does have some Neo Nazis and shit. They have little power and are not even remotely close to being a majority.

Of course Russia(and the USA and quite a few other countries) have their own pockets of Nazis. It's essentially projection and dehumanizing propaganda to try to save face, make people not care about their war crimes and whip up their solider.

That's not to say it's OK to justify Russia's invasion and occupation, however. They've been itching to do that for years so Putin could reclaim Soviet Russia's former satellite states and relive glory days that never actually existed, and claiming that they're going after nazis is just a flimsy excuse to justify that.

Also its worth noting that Russias rhetoric is quite fascist, and the Wagner group mercs they employ are out-and-out Neo-Nazis.

Its just a transparent attempt to justify engaging in a war of aggression against a neighboring state for nakedly imperialistic aims.

And I think imperialism is bad no matter who does it, personally.

Russia is not trying to convince anyone of anything. They don't care what the West thinks because they know we still won't do shit about it. They just made up an excuse to pretend to have some kind of justification but they know no one outside Russia really believes it.

Interesting - do you mean more per population? Or just the most of any countries in the world?

The Azov Battalion gives them reason to, and they use it for sure.

there is a pretty prominent neo nazi militia movement in ukraine and even as recently as a year ago people were pretty open to talking about that.

its not as deeply engrained or widespread as russia claims, but it's there

Seems like there's a lot of misinformation about the Azov battalion in here. I would really suggest y'all read up on it since it's basically the cornerstone of Russias entire propaganda campaign. You owe it to yourself to not propagate legitimate disinformation or misinformation.

Do you have a link? Quick Googling found some articles about the numerous streets named after Ukrainian nationals who were Nazi sympathizers..

There are a lot of Nazis there. But there are some how more Nazis in Russia , like what the hell.
