Separate the pokemon system from the rpg systems and it becomes obvious the mainline games have never been all that good next to contemporary rpgs. RBY/GSC were peak dungeon diving though.

Never played World so I can't comment on that.

Well one is the biggest media franchise on the planet and the other is not so I would say no

I really loved the first Digimon game. Wish they would remake it and clean up the problems with it. It was cool to see the city grow.

Do you guys remember that Playstation Monster Rancher game where you'd disc swap with random CDs to summon monsters and each disc had its own monster that never changed?

as far as i'd usually disagree with this assessment in that imo quality usually begets popularity, i really feel like it applies to pokemon as an exception. it had huge success early on and it's barely innovated since then, relying on its status as a media juggernaut to coast along on its popularity

not that digimon has really attempted to innovate per se, but both Survive and Cyber Sleuth are things that i'd kill to see pokemon try to accomplish. but no, they understaffed the games on a technical level (to the point where they couldn't fulfill promises made) and reuse literally the exact same formula every game

at this point the only thing I'm excited to see when a new pokemon game comes out are character designs and the music, both of which are carried by pure talent

not counting diglett tunnel, there are only 5 "dungeons" in r/b/y, and two are optional

Hmm... That's about right. I'd say there's about 6 decent dungeons with a few simple ones. +2 more areas that offer a decent exploration experience but I wouldn't consider them dungeons for reasons.

In any case the later games don't have anything close to the experience those games offered.

I remember someone on one of the boards told me that sort of thing doesn't belong in the mainline games and it made me sad. How could I really say anything when it's been so long?
