Burning through 50 batteries in a week.

Do Zoomers even know the existence of the Poke Rap?

I still play and have gotten younger family members into the series, and they got others into Pokemon as well so I have spread the good word of Arceus.

Will continue to do my part to support a series that still brings me joy.

I do not miss dark screens and being at the mercy of battery life. I may have my problems with modern pokeymans, but I'm glad kids today don't hafta deal with that shit.

No they're not. They're literally a fantasy version of Japanese Bug fighting -- in Japan "Looking for rare species, catching them, and adding them to their collection is what fuelled the Japanese children into getting out of bed of a morning and exploring their immediate environment, often venturing out into more foliage-populated areas for the sake of discovering an insect their friends have yet to."

God damn that was an awesome Christmas. Got an SP with Sapphire and LTTP

I didn't know how flash worked as a kid so i always felt my way through the cave. Pretty much mapped that place out in my head. good times

As an only child I was the relatively richer kid that could afford the energizer bunny while my friends were literally mixing and matching batteries and doing tricks like putting them in the fridge/freezer hoping that would make them "last longer"

I first played pokemon having to hold a flashlight between my neck and shoulder. Got pokemon red for my birthday and we had a power outage. I was gonna play damnit. Spent a hour like that trying to catch a Pikachu. Kod the first one but then I knew it could be found there..

I definitely don't miss the days of not having backlit handhelds... When I got my first GBA (not an SP) my dad modded it to have a back light and that was awesome... Don't want anyone to have to play like we did...

.it was fine as a kid. My neck and back kill me thinking of the positions I played in justbto have the light just right to play

I briefly owned a sega game gear as a kid
And if I were lucky it would last close to an hour before dying in a car ride

One thing I miss about the old cartridge days is buying/renting a used game and finding out what shit the old owner was up to.

Like finding out what they named everything.

Like finding out what they named everything.

I don't miss this. Even as a kid that feeling of saving over their game was uncomfortable.

the only issue I had with the Water Temple was knowing how to beat Dark Link. It was actually one of my favorite temples as a teenager

You mean when your Pokmon sleeps through five turns, then hurts itself in its confusion and then put back to sleep?

The GBA SP was a game changer in so many things ways.

They also won't understand the joy of the "playground rumor."

If you can get to the grass behind the fences/trees of route 1, you can catch all the starters.

Use strength on the truck to find Mew.

Complete the pokedex and fill the pc boxes, and Bill will let you into his "secret cave" behind his house, full of legendary escape, including mew.

Beat the elite four 100 times and you can fight Professor Oak.

There was even this one loser who talked about walking in front of a trainer, hitting start, teleporting/flying away, going back to the route, closing the start menu, and then fighting a level 7 mew. But that was just silly. Next you'll tell me I can get infinite rare candies by fighting some static next to cinnabar island.

Was such a magical time. The internet killed that whole sense of mystery and wonder completely dead, sadly.

They really didn't have a way to plug the Gameboy in at home.

Brings me back to the day I got Pokmon Blue. I got it at Walmart and then my parents took me to some department store where I played a while. I had to stop playing going home since I didn't have any light in the car.

I don't miss the days of non-backlit screens.

I still have my Pokemon Red cartridge with my completed pokedex save on there along with the mew I got from some Toys R Us event in '99.

Yeah, I'm surprised as well. I have the save backed up. It's funny because the battery in my Pokemon Crystal died before the one in Red.

Not even slightly. It's more like a boxing match or UFC fight. Pokmon can refuse their trainer's commands if they don't respect you. They're not forced to fight, and some of the Pokmon are literally more intelligent than humans.

This comparison always feels like someone's attempt to be edgy and take the joy out of it, despite the fact that it's been addressed like a hundred times over the years.

I had a similar situation. Crystal died a few years ago, but Yellow chugged along fine until about a month ago. Only one of my gen 1 carts to last that long.

They've all since had Open Cart Surgery though, so they're all good now.

Gen 2 had the clock that drained the battery faster.
