Gen 2 had the clock that drained the battery faster.

Im now reminded of the heartache I experienced upon finding my old Crystal cartridge that I had almost all pokemon you could catch without trading/hacking, placing it in my GBA, and seeing the only option was new game

Crystal drains absurdly fast even compared to Gold and Silver.

No zoomer will feel the 6 year old energy of navigating the Dark Cave in RBY without Flash because you are 6 and for all purposes an idiot.

I don't know how i didn't know to use flash, but I know that that I didn't. Maybe I didn't know how to teach it in the first place, GBC and Yellow we're my first console and game period, I probably had no clue what I was doing.

Koga's gym was also a bitch to navigate and that was actually lit up.

Probably because the game doesn't really tell you Flash is a solution. There's one guy who vaguely suggests there's an aide... somewhere that has something for you, and then a pokedex check (that if you're 6, your team is probably starter + maybe Pikachu so you might not even meet) for an HM for Flash. And that's only if you made the connection to go through Digletts Cave to arrive back near Pewter City - which isn't shared with you. Even like, the gen 3 games are more helpful than most of the stuff in RBY, much less the gen 8 games.

Add in if you're 6 and not paying that close attention, or 4 and can barely read, you'll probably miss that entirely.

The internet has sort of ruined the schoolyard think-tank from back in the day. Every day at recess we would convene at one of these things:

and discuss how to defeat certain gym leaders, where to find Pikachu, how to get unlimited Master Balls/Rare Candies, how to learn surf, fly, flash, etc. (and what they're used for)...

It was a special time. I feel like kids have it so easy with guides and youtube videos literally everywhere detailing every tiny nuance of every game in existence, available on their smartphone at any time they wish.

Not saying it's a bad thing, but there's definitely an element of wonder and natural evolution missing from the experience now.

And on the other side of the coin there was the sheer power you could exert by walking in one day and announcing that you'd not only found but caught Ho-Oh.

It was a unique time though, it was nice of the Pokemon games to feed into it by being really esoteric with Ruins of Alph and the Regis.

Those were awful times. Thanks goodness for the GBA SP.

I had one of these light/magnifying lens back in the day. I still have my GBC, but not the light.

I had one of those too. I thought it was worth it for the magnifying glass alone. My vision has always been fine but even as a kid I had the bigger is better mindset.
