People realized they were too generic even for mainstream.

Apparently they never really broke up, they still tour and stuff and released albums every few years but music saw an upheaval in the mid 2000's where rap became the dominant genre where prior rock had been dominant. You just don't hear much about rock bands since like 2006.

I actually went to high school with the woman who is married to the lead singer so I see random updates about that dudes personal life on social media sometimes. They both went sober within the last few years and I think shes currently pregnant with their second child. Pretty sure Sum 41 still tours and plays shows, but no one cares. Including me. Was never into them. Wish my one degree of separation to a formerly famous musician was someone way cooler than the dude from Sum 41 of all things

Yeah. It's not like you had Thanksgiving dinner with Eddie... sorry, Edward Van Halen at the same table. That's a totally different story.

It's the same for every decade/generation, honestly. Some acts (and genres) survive and continue on, others die but remain in people's memory, but dozens upon dozens of acts simply fade away and are almost completely forgotten, until you hear one of their old songs on an oldies weekend on the radio and go "Oh yeah, that's right, they were a thing."

It's also the root of nostalgia. We generally remember all the best bands or our favorite bands, and remember a few terrible bands just for the novelty of it, but for the most part we tend to forget about all the lame and mediocre bands that flooded the airwaves in any given era. So we only remember the good parts and overromanticize it, while comparing it directly to the ever-present mediocrity of today.

Every generation does it. Every generation will continue to do it. That's just life.

2008 at the earliest, All Hope is Gone by Slipknot and it's singles were pretty big, Psychosocial and Dead Memories were huge songs that even were played on regular MTV among the like of Lady Gaga and whatever else was big at the time

I think you could argue Nightmare got A7X into the mainstream consciousness too, and Ghost seems to have made an impact on the mainstream for rock/metal (though I think that mostly has to do with their image/branding) but yeah, arguably 3 big bands in the last 15 or so years is pretty bad

We can debate back and forth about specific dates and stuff but I'll adamantly state that by 2010 rock collapsed. The video I link is a dude who used to be music journalist and has some interesting takes on the subject.

My buddy and I were talking about how much more musically interesting they are compared to Blink-182. I never got into Blink.
