It is always hilarious how so many people on the Internet keeps talking the best times of their internet lives was some form of old school Internet. To me, it's similar to the people who keeps talking about the best times of their lives were in high school.

It usually sounds more like people mean the internet culture peaked around whatever time they mean and less like they themselves peaked.
I'd love to see late 00s internet again.

Just because people peaked in the 2010s doesn't mean the Internet peaked.

The beautiful people are in charge, just like everywhere else
Not wrong, the 2010s saw traditional forum social media dropped in exchange for the likes of Instagram, selfies, and photos of your expensive restaurant meal.

Whole platforms like Snapchat are about taking pictures of your face and sending it to each other.

It's a different universe compared to 00s internet.

From what I've seen, this whole wanting to be e-famous has always been a thing before the social media traits became super popular. You know how much dumb shit people did for Internet points back then?

Only thing i miss are some of big parkour forums like 3run and apk. Also that tricking forum that juju created but is now gone.. id visit 3run forums a lot till it got deleted sometime in 2012 or so. There are still some pk forums around but barely anyone responds in months. The biggest online community is now a Facebook group but its mostly just people posting vids and no actual topic discussions.

It's not about "e-celebrities" though. It's about how the dominant communication networks online have changed the *fundamental* ways people interact on the internet.

I kinda get where she's coming from.

It's basically anything that's "new" will eventually gets oversaturated and become a shell of itself, where you have to really dig to find the enjoyable things.

Kinda like grunge rock of gangsta rap in the early 90's. Both were really great until it got commercialized and oversaturated with bands and groups that weren't nearly as good as the originators.

As I'm always happy to say, everyone's vocabulary blending together has been a low point. If consulted, I'd have been against trading smaller fads and spontaneity for the same formulaic shit on perpetual loop, based, cringe, edgy, hater, when ____ (insert reaction image), x video BUT (insert lazy edit) and the endless defaulting to using the word meme whenever someone doesn't know what to say.

It contaminates everything it touches too, they don't need to understand what context or joke, they have this thing where they'd told its funny enough and they come to believe it. Then instead of doing much witty with it it's like this gold rush for likes and ad revenue before before the joke is inevitably run into the ground so the default approach is to take old tired jokes and attach them to the new joke in the hope the new combined version will set off the weird impulse that makes these people force a positive response. I have seen a grand total of one thing successfully fight these people off after they deigned that it would be their next victim.

The internet for the most part has become such an unfunny place. If humor is subversion of expectations, then what does it mean if you all agree beforehand what will be considered funny and then not only offer up the same courtesy laugh when it inevitably appears in front of them hundreds of times, but go on to use the same alleged humor as if it's now your turn to be the funny person in the endlessly repeating scenario. Is that what happens to people who need more affection in their life than they're presently getting? Insatiably greedy people?
If the word meme is going to be stripped of the in-joke/fad meaning we gave it and go right back to meaning a recurring idea, are we dealing with a bunch of people who use simple "me recognise so me cheer and then me propagate idea" logic?

Ok actually reading the article she's not really wrong about anything that I can tell. There absolutely has been a massive culture shift over how the internet is used and how people interact over it. Whether it's better or worse is subjective, but her analysis of what happened is solid, and the why isn't unreasonable.

Though imo the thing that "killed" the internet was Facebook. Once it became in vogue to shirk anonymity and handles in favor of your real name and selfies, that's when the big shifts started happening.

On one hand, it's lame as fuck. On the other, we all sort of knew it would turn out like this. Cyberpunk authors have been exploring the growing intersection of the internet and real life for ages. It was always going to come to this. <__<

Happened WAY before 2020.

Depends on what you see as the best.

For me, all I see is even more Internet integration in to just everything in the real world, and I'm personally so fucking burned out on it the thought sickens me.

Semi related but do you think people misuse the word nostalgia?
I was under the impression it was some mix of longing and sadness. Like something was meant to catch you off guard by suddenly appearing again and put you into a sombre mood. Not the most common thing to feel.

Now it feels like it simply means you remember something or previously liked it. To be nostalgic for something now almost means "Hey there's something I like and can react to positively but I wouldn't say I'm a big fan now." and it's something that happens fairly regularly.
Unless people are in a constant state of anguish and everything reminds them of better days, it feels very devalued.

For better or worst, words do change and evolve. Sometimes it means more than its technical definition. For example, I've seen people use Atheism to mean anti-religion when technically all it means is you don't believe in a deity.
