I saw this youtuber talk about it one time. He said the creator was punished, did his time and is no longer the bad person he was before so many have forgiven him.

Japan has very loose laws on child porn and age of consent. Modern cities raised it to the 16-18 range but you can go out to the boondocks where the minimum is 13 to this day.

Nah, every time anyone bothers to mention Kenshin, this pops up, just like in this topic, everyone who knows about the show knows about the creator.

It's a great piece of media, we're always ignoring the abhorrent history of great artists.

If the mangaka is sincere in their rehabilitation they should donate to programs that assist children affected by these crimes, by partaking in any content related to it he's perpetuated the Demand for more content that harms children whether he's directly hurt one or not his actions caused harm and he should continue to redeem himself beyond mandatory punishment.

Edit: Actually he never actually went to jail, he was found guilty but his sentence was suspended and he didn't get any real punishment

The minimum is not 13 even in the boondocks. Japan has extremely strict statutory rape laws. In a theoretical place where a 13 year old could legally consent it would only be with other 13 year olds.

I'm not sure I really understand what the difference is between "I just went looking for it and found it" versus "I bought it from the producers"

When it comes to japan or east asia in general it takes drug related charges to really get the book thrown at you (almost like a complete reversal when it comes to the west. We have so many celebrities caught up in crazy drug fueled shenanigans but rightfully so no one will have nothing to do with a person deep into child porn). A slap on the wrist for finding hundreds of child porn dvds but had the guy had some coke or even a ton of weeb him and his manga would have gotten erased from history or something.

Not really. Buying physical DVDs means there was an exchange of money that allowed producers and traffickers of CP to make a profit. Downloading something off a torrent site, while still obviously of an atrociously abhorrent act, doesn't do that.

The douchebag literally funded CP and likely child trafficking by seemingly buying over a hundred DVDs. He in all likelihood paid the assholes that filmed it more than he got fined.
