I feel like those kind of people honestly think LGBTQ+ people shouldn't be allowed to breed or adopt. They believe in "up to the parents" as much as they believe in "up to the states".

I used to think they forget LGBTQ+ parents exist when they do the "protect the children" nonsense, but I think they know perfectly well.

They should teach not to be anti and figure out their history and struggles and implement that. Is that what we mean? But, we can't even get them to implement black history in any major way ...so, probably not happening anytime soon.

My stepmother was actually complaining about that last night. Basically she said that even as a lesbian woman she was getting tired of "forced inclusion". Using her friend's kids as an example because they are required to include LGBTQ+, Asian, black,... characters in stories they have write for English, Dutch and French classes and the like.
It felt awkward as a straight man having to explain to a lesbian woman that it's an important part in the process of normalizing her and other minorities. She did end up understanding though.

I mean I'm not against the sentiment but demanding a "Gay people exist and we need to talk about them and stop you from being a jerk to them!" seems like an odd lesson to force on every school

I mean what class would you even slip that into? When children are learning ABCs and the difference between a house and a tree?

Isn't "Don't be a dick" by itself enough?

I'm not sure this is something you can codify into a school curriculum.

How do you insert "more gay people into the history books" just talk about Oscar Wilde all day?

Take WW2 for example. How do you talk about the Eastern Front and Neville Chamberlain and Rommel's tank deployments in Africa in way that is more LGBTQ inclusive?

You can't, so do you take that WW2 lesson and instead teach about how Leonardo Da Vinci may or may not have enjoyed playing hide the pickle with his lad friends while painting?

It doesn't fit.

I get the emotion here but I'm not sure these are pragmatic or quantifiable ideas. If anything they will just give Jesus Freaks a chance to REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE and be bigger dicks to gay people.

LGBTQ+ is generally sexually charged and I don't think little kids need to hear about the finer details of THAT sort of stuff (I know that back as a 5-year old I wouldn't have wanted to hear about it either), but it absolutely should be taught that relationships come in forms besides man/woman and that it's perfectly fine and should be respected (basically as an introductory form to LGBTQ+)

It shouldn't JUST be taught in kindergarten or whatever, either -- it should be something enforced all the way up to and including the ages where said kids might actually start forming those relationships.

And yes I do think we should force LGBTQ+ awareness down people's throats until things change. Racism wasn't less normalized by being quiet and not being too annoying to white supremacists.

I didn't even know anything about gay people until high school. And that was only cause there was an LGBT club. Just LGBT mind you, they didn't add the Q yet.

Oh and I only found out about the club because they lacked members and were trying to recruit literally anyone. Nobody wanted to at the time, I think they had barely enough people to be an official club.

A pretty common theme I've heard from talking to trans people of my generation who didn't realize until they were older that they were trans is that they simply didn't have the language to even describe how they were feeling their whole lives.
While I don't blame my parent's, since its not like they knew anything about trans people either, if someone is intentionally trying to keep a child from knowledge that could help help them understand themselves, it is nothing short of barbaric child abuse.

What discussion are you not allowed to have? Are you upset if children learn about straight people or white and black people?

And I don't why I'm addressing something Unfair said, but obviously I'm not saying to abandon all curriculum for children and only teach about LGBTQ+ people forever.

That's too simplistic of an approach. That's like a teacher telling a bully "Don't be a bully" and expecting it to solve anything.

I'm not sure this is something you can codify into a school curriculum.

How do you insert "more gay people into the history books" just talk about Oscar Wilde all day?

It doesn't fit.
You can absolutely make lessons LGTBQ+ inclusive. It doesn't have to turn every lesson into that, but you can include pioneers of the LGTBQ+ community. Include things such as the Scientific-Humanitarian Committee, the first LGBT rights organization in history. Or poetry from Elsa Gidlow, who published the first openly lesbian love poetry in the US.

And just like we have lessons on Civil Rights movements and legislation, we should have lessons on LGBTQ+ Rights movements and legislation. There's a lot that can be taught. It is as much a part of history as everything else.

Not to mention everything that should be changed about health classes.

I get the emotion here but I'm not sure these are pragmatic or quantifiable ideas. If anything they will just give Jesus Freaks a chance to REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE and be bigger dicks to gay people.

My point is, people are making a fuss about just teaching kids of the existance of gay people and trans people.

Then question, why is there a fuss for this when we teach kids that men and women go together?

Then pull it together that the answer for the last question is because it is a sexual topic.

Therefore, the people claiming that gay and trans issues shouldn't be taught are in turn, making the whole thing sexual when it doesn't need to be.

I feel like it should just be part of everyday conversation. Like...don't make it weird, it's not that hard to be chill about it. Whenever you teach about men and women, even a casual mention of nonbinary and the like would go a long way.

LGBTQIA+ people exist, and no matter how angry that may make some parents, those people will continue to exist. Therefore, kids need to learn about them.

Refusing to teach about LGBTQIA+ people does not prevent those people from existing, it just makes your students less aware of the world around them.
