I think I have a really basic palate, because whenever family friends come over from Belgium, for example, they sometimes bring over chocolate.

and while it's good, and I think it's better than a lot of the stuff you find in the US, it's not that much better, for me.

oh yea, if you haven't tried it, Kinder Bueno is good. you can find it in a lot of grocery stores.

It is a well known fact that American candy and chocolate is amongst the worst in the world. Not just my opinion but from everyone outside America who has eaten it.

Here in Britain where I live we do not stuff our chocolate and sweets (candy) with High Froctose Corn Syrup, artificial colourings, preservatives and other crap that the FDA allows in American food and drink or do not put in parafin wax into our chocolate which is what the Americans do as that acts like a congealing agent.

People say that Hersheys makes the worst chocolate on the planet. I agree but in saying that I did like their Dark Chocolate Kisses.

British chocolate is considered amongst the best in the world.

True story for you, In 1993 I was in Kissimmee Folrida and they have a theme park called Old Town. One of the shops there was a British shop that sold things to do with Britain including British food and drink. So I bought myself a Mars Galaxy (Dove to you Americans) and it was sheer unadulterated pleasure. After two weeks of eating Americas crap pathetic chocolate that Galaxy was paradise. I took my time and savoured it.

The way that chocolate is made in America causes butyric acid to form in the chocolate (it is safe, so don't worry about that). If you are used to eating American chocolate then it will mostly be lost flavor-wise, but if you aren't then it being one of the major acids that comes up when you vomit causes the mental connection and thus the taste. In that way American chocolate is an acquired taste, it's just one that you grow to dislike if you don't have it rather than a more standard one that you like more as your taste buds develop.

Honestly I think it's mostly a culture thing. For whatever reason chocolate isn't as big of a thing in the US as it is in other countries. Which yeah leads to the cheaper stuff and designs with the longest potential shelf life being the most popular.

When I was in the US I was really surprised at the chocolate bar section in grocery stores. It's mostly peanut related stuff!

There's no requirement it's just cheaper than cane sugar. Most people can't tell the difference if it's baked into something.

As I mentioned: it's the butyric acid. In terms of most everything else American chocolate isn't actually all that different than the alternatives (well, "normal" ones to be compared like British... it is *very* different when compared to, say, Pilipino chocolate). No matter what you do so long as the acid exists people who aren't acutely used to it being in chocolate will immediately notice its presence.

Lindt/Lindor is pretty amazing. You should try the dark chocolate they do.

I can honestly say that I've hated every American chocolate bar I've tried (not in terms of brands, like Mars, which has a huge factory here in the UK), but as in chocolate that was physically made in the US. The texture and flavour is just... off.

That said, it's only the really big mass-manufactured stuff like Hershey's that rocks up in our import shop, so we probably only get the worst stuff over here so it's not really a fair judgement. I'd probably find stuff I liked if I actually visited America.

I mean, it wouldn't surprise me if such a rumor existed but I can guarantee that the method that is used that causes the acid to form is *vastly* more important. As in, if you bought a cow, raised it until it gave you milk, and then used that milk to make chocolate it would still have the exact same sort of problem as Hershey's does (ignoring the fact that, you know, the rest of your chocolate would probably not be cheap and thus dramatically better to the American palate ~.~) if you did not change the methods of how Hershey's makes its chocolate in the first place.

You are correct about the problem being in the milk, however, as that is where the formation happens. It is also why some store bought milk is extremely sour even if it hasn't gone bad as the process is specifically used in America due to the milk in question having to travel over large distances and be stored for lengthy periods.
