I thought people said it as a joke but I have multiple classmates that truly believe it was a coverup. I also heard a dj on a popular local station question it on air a few weeks ago (station probably got some calls about that one)

It's because Stanley Kubrick was hired to film a moon landing in case something happened to the promised live feed, it's even postulated that some stations ran the Kubrick footage in leiu of the NASA feed, based off contemporary reports.

Kubrick spent the rest of his life worried the Nixon or the CIA would off him, probably shortened his life because of the stress it caused him.

It was in the CIA's interests to foster and amplify the whole idea and a movie with Rupert Grint was made about it.

Many (possibly 'most', although I hope not) people either aren't capable of thinking or they choose not to think and just believe whatever is most amusing at the time. The more ridiculous the claim the better. See Trump and everything related to Trump (although the left isn't free of this).

A major plot point of Dr. McNinja revolved around a mayor who prepped the town for a zombie apocalypse, based off an actual NASA astronaut who did such, because of whatever he saw while up there.

There was a documentary on FOX in the 90's or early 2000's, I think it was just called Conspiracy Theory, about the moon landing hoax. I'll admit I was ready to believe the hoax after watching that, but then I searched the internet and found that all the claims in the documentary were easily debunked bullshit. The type of people who believe that also believe the Earth is flat and NASA is hiding God in the firmament.

Using the scientific method and Occam's razor.

It is consistent with my other hypotheses regarding which information sources, authorities, and elements of my education appear reliable...and I DO continually recheck that. It would also violate Occam's razor to believe that all of those sources could be untrue AND that multiple large government entities could successfully keep a secret that large for sixty years (or minutes).

No, but in general the wilder the claim the less likely that it's true.

Occam's razor.

This alone proves nothing though and is very subjective to change based on what we *do* know about the world. Trust me, I believe we put dudes up there in space, but what I am saying is how can I, personally, verify that? There is no way to. It's all based on trust from accounts of people who lived during that timeframe.

Hmmm: it would be a high hurdle to convince me of something else there. You think it was something different than the other attacks ongoing that day? And that it was either preplanned (implying all of the attacks were staged) or manufactured instantly as the crisis was unfolding such that every witness could give the same story? And what would the motivation be?

GanglyKhan posted...

I know what you're trying to say, but if you discount every reliable source then you know nothing other than what you have experienced and history is 100% unknowable. Occam's razor isn't perfect, but you need to use some tools to figure out what is most likely true: there is disinformation out there but giving up is the wrong approach.

The belief is that The Bible is true, and big government is coming to get Christians again, and their beliefs. One of the truths of the bible, is that the earth is flat. So the government is going through all of these methods and rigmarole to persecute christians.

The pentagon being hit on 9/11

Specifically, the theory that it wasn't a plane that hit the pentagon

There is a Major General Stubblebine (think I spelled it right) while spent his entire career analyzing photos to determine and identify a wide variety of objects of interest to the military; it is his claim that the object that struck the Pentagon was not a plane but a missile. The implication being that the passengers listed as being aboard the flight were intelligence operators, publicly disappeared to hide covert operations.

This trope dates back to a movie from the seventies or the eighties about a TSA agent investigating crashes were he believes the passengers were swapped out for corpses just before the crash, and uncovers a time traveling Noah's Ark to save humanity. Sherlock did an episode (and a few that led to it) with a similar plot, empty passenger plane, passengers already dead... Couple of other instances I think. Even some of the Malaysian Airlines crashes had some theories along those lines. It props up with air crashes from time to time quite frequently.

Based off the general and just the security footage of the impact, I can understand the desire to believe, but when you look at the photos of the impact site and inspect the damage during the fire and after, it's clearly a passenger plane that impacted.

Part of the conspiracy included the downed flight 93 into the Pennsylvania field, that it was supposed to hit the pentagon, and when it didn't, the US launched a missile strike against the pentagon.

Common wisdom says they were going to strike the White House, I have seen evidence to suggest they were planning to strike Sears Tower (now Willis Tower) in Chicago to further demonstrate the engineering flaw exposed by the collapse of the twin towers in New York.

It was the basis of the second WTC attack planning, after the bombing in the nineties (had it been larger or in the right place, the entire complex would have come down then) they looked at the math and determined that a plane with most of its full reserves, flying into a sufficiently tall enough building, between 1/3 to a 1/4 of the way from the top, will cause enough structural damage to cause a catastrophic failure.

There are several factors that led to the unprecedented pancake collapse of the complex, but it is likely that it is repeatable with the right buildings. We kind of ignore and gloss over the reasons for the complete collapse of the entire complex or how vulnerable we are from a dedicated individual.

I'm going to bet against the terrorists finding the building plans and doing the math. I will instead bet on them saying "hey, the WTC, Pentagon, and Capitol building would make great symbolic targets". If they were trying to cause maximum damage they would have avoided the Pentagon, which is designed specifically to mitigate damage from such strikes. I'm sure they weren't disappointed to see the towers fall, but I doubt they had calcs in the drawer. And if I had to guess I would say the towers were probably the target they were least interested in of the three.

Anyways, yes, we have vulnerabilities...but skyscrapers aren't the biggest. A packed stadium would cause more carnage...and this will all look like nothing once some nut gets their hands on a nuke. It's inevitable that will happen sooner or later. Maybe sooner rather than later if you count Putin.

Guy was an engineering student at German Polytechnic. Doesn't take much to get a hold of basic architectural plans.

There is a height limit, above that limit, a building compromised in the right way, at the right height will cause the building to collapse into itself under its own weight. Yeah a stadium is an easier target but it has been demonstrated what kind of chaos can be caused by taking down a supertall structure.
