DXM is a strong dissociative that has recreational appeal to some, particularly those who have difficulty procuring more heavily controlled substances. In my day we called it "robotrippin". There's nothing new about this. It's also why it tastes so awful, to try to discourage recreational consumption.

Some years back as a gag somebody took a picture of chicken breasts in ny-quil, both capitalizing on the gross out factor AND the drug humor.

I'm sure folks lacking in taste buds decided to give it a try.
