I don't really have a set choice, so I'll flip flop between the two. Often depends on what has better options and if the choice affects the story.

Generally a female due to having more options available.

Female and the first thing I do is crank the bust slider to MAX

I play as a male first usually. There have been exceptions though, like games where there are gender locked classes.

Depends on the art style. Generally, if it's gritty then male, and if pretty/anime then female. If it's cute/cartoony then it depends. Sometimes both if multiple characters are allowed.

Barring situations where different classes or races have different traits or that I need to assign points, I don't spend any time whatsoever on character creator screens.

Depends on the game. I guess I tend to go with male characters, unless theres something about the game to suggest that a female character is the intended default. In Bards Tale 4, for example, you start off as a female character and then have the option of customizing a new character after the tutorial is done, but I just stick with the original one. Also like someone else said, if there are gender-locked classes or specific story arcs for specific genders I may pick a female character to access those.

Generally male, and Ill give them my name. Though if its a series with dating/marriage elements, Ill often use the canon name.

Honestly I have no idea. Every game with a character creator i decide how I want to play this game and try and make a character based on that. Sometimes that means i make a grotesque monster of a being because I think it'll be funny, sometimes I make a serious character for a not so serious game, it varies too wildly so I picked another option if available.

I just honestly don't really care, and my hunch is that they always make sure that the default option works for cutscenes, so I figure that going default leads to a marginally smaller chance of random glitching, clipping, or other odd appearances.

Starting with a complete character creator is a pretty surefire way to make sure I probably never play the game.

Though generic guy with maybe 2-3 changes while I flip through. If its a really good game and I do another play, I might do the girl character then. The female characters often have the more fun customization options.

That was fun before it was so many games it became overwhelming. Especially in games where you end up in a suit that obscures everything anyway. Or a game where Ill opt to play first person like Fallout/Elder Scrolls anyway

Generally male, but I switch it up every once in awhile. Like Skyrim, I did a female Breton first time.

Though some Pokemon games I had to pick the girl because the boy designs in some of them just look so derp to me. (looking at you Gen IV and Black/White 2!)

I usually pick whichever fits the build I'm going for and accessorizing in. The girl options almost always have better aesthetics than the boy options.

Hubby and I like WoW's approach in just letting players switch a character's gender on the fly for free.

The lady gamers have definitely enjoyed the addition since a lot of thirsty male gamers turn tail once you hit the barber shop to temporarily switch to a male model. The implications are gold.

in Mass Effect i played female
in Stardew Valley i play male,
in Genshin Impact i play female (not character creator, but it lets you pick gender of main character)

I always play female characters unless I don't have a choice.

A male and no matter how hard i try hes still ugly af so i reset and just pick the default look.

Usually a female character, since most of the time where I actually want to make a dude the hairstyles that I want isn't a thing that exists. (Dreads, cornrows, or some type of braids in general. Funny enough you usually find these styles in korean or japanese made games more than western dev games, =/ lol).

Right now I am playing the demo for that wo long fallen dynasty game, and since it uses the awesome nioh character creation I can easily see myself making a dude and a lady character for this one.

Nice. I loved all the hair options in Nioh 2, and ended up making a nice looking Nagoriyuki from Guilty Gear.

Yeah its pretty awesome. They look to have kept majority of the same hair style and bang options (wo long has even more options for seperate hair and bang settings), and they have nagoriyuki's exact dreads style as a bang option for the back so I can't wait to mooch someone's character creation for him.

At the moment I just winged it and came up with what looks to be a jojo's bizarre adventure character with naruto whiskers, lol. They give us the ability to color the hair and like 4 sections of bangs seperately so god dammit I had no restraint and basically dumped a paint can over my character's head.

The amount of sub-options is pretty nuts....like there is about 10 or so seperate options just for the cheeks, chin, nose etc. alone. Once the actual game comes out I am going to spend like two hours or so in the creation instead of just throwing something out there.

Depends on the game and the character. Something like a dungeon crawler, if I go mage I usually do female. I went with the female option in Immortals also.

I'm probably 70/30 male to female if I had to guess.

I think its funny how irrationally mad that people get when other people play as characters of the opposite gender

Typically female unless there are dating elements that are gender locked. I spend some time with character creation, but not an hour. I'll choose a nice face preset, then customize the hair and eyes. Customizing the cheekbones and width between eyes and how high and low, big or small everything is and all that is too much for me.

This. I'll play as a male character if there's a female character that I want to romance in that playthrough but the game won't let me do so as a female character. Aside from that, I always go with a female character for myself.

As a male gamer I will always play as female. More options for them plus they give you something nice to look at when running around the boring bits.
