Not really sure how to multi-task and get the car into second and third gears, so I'll just leave it at that. The clutch pedal is too much of a hassle, and I don't really understand how to use it. The car automatically turns off every time it stops, but that's whatever. All I need with this stupid rental is to go from home to the grocery store in a residential area, so it doesn't bother me that I can't go fast. But how do people learn how to drive this thing? It's so confusing to figure out, and makes me wonder why automatic wasn't just invented first. Like what's the advantage of this overly complicated thing?

To stop it from stalling when you stop you need to hit the clutch then the brake.

It's very fun to drive manual. The only time it isn't is when there's a lot of traffic. Then it's infuriating lol

This topic gave me a lot of lols

The clutch is easier to figure out with practise, but just picture a spinning cog and a latch that loocks against the cog when youre not pressing it and releases when you press the pedal in. Because that's what it basically is.

honestly, getting it into first gear and rolling forward is the hardest part, which you've learned how to do. so good job!

shifting into the higher gears is just a matter of lifting up on the gas, pushing down the clutch, shifting, then easing up on the clutch while going down on the gas.

There used to be an argument to say that they're infinitely more responsive, so if you like being able to take off as fast as you intend then a manual is better for that. Autos are definitely more sluggish and indirect when you want to floor it.

That argument becomes less and less convincing the more sophisticated auto cars become.

The transmission itself consumes a fair bit of fuel. Also, older automatics at least tended to only have four gears, while manuals of the same age would usually have five (not counting reverse for either type). This meant the manual could be gear-matched to the speed a bit more accurately. On top of all that, it's possible to pick your gears in a manual specifically for fuel efficiency (conversely, you can also pick them in a way that's wasteful as fuck on fuel, but gets you to a high speed very quickly), whereas autos aren't very flexible in this regard and just do whatever they're designed to do.

If you prefer automatic theres no reason to fuck with manual though.

An old John Deere my dad owned that had a clutch to shift gears (mostly backwards and forwards.)

Just thinking about it gives me traumatic flashbacks to my dad yelling at me to use the clutch while smacking one of his hands into the other.

The traumatic part is an exaggeration btw.
