Actually yeah, this is a good question.

Even three 'footlongs' with extra meat wouldn't cost anywhere near that.

So I'm guessing the delivery fee and service fee bumped it up to a stupid high amount.

And people wonder why they don't want to toss in an additional $10-20 after all of those other bullshit fees.

All this story tells me is that door dash is too expensive, AND too cheap.

If Doordash is only charging $2.25 for a delivery then why would my tip amount for the driver include the $80 order? The driver only had a part to play for that 2.25 bit, so I don't know why the guy in the story or the TC would use less than 50 cents as some sort of staging point for a tipping rant.

On the rare occasion I order delivery, I use the restaurant's own service (eg. pizza joint). And I tip the driver in cash to make sure the money is going to them and not someone else.

I'll never use one of those stupid delivery apps, which have already been found siphoning off tips.

ikr though the OP said they were "loaded", that amount of extra toppings and shit still couldn't reasonably add up to more than EVEN $20 each! So either the taxes and fees bloated the order or something isn't adding up in the story.

they essentially added a middleman to the standard food ordering process. Business don't want to take too much of a hit (they do), customers don't want too much of a hit (They have one), so the driver takes the biggest hit.

Doordash has successfully brainwashed this driver, and many more, into hating the wrong entity. Hating the customer, rather than doing something about their own circumstance.

The model is backwards anyway.
Instead of being paid by doordash or whatever (as a "contractor", for tax reasons), the apps should be a subscription or commission service that handles logistics and transactions.

The model is definitely going to flip into being that way if unionization ever starts.

Then take your butt over to the restaurant and get the food yourself. I did doordash while I was poor and y'all non tippers were also more than likely to leave bad reviews and be pickier. I'd rather just reject your order and find an order that tips better.

What about those with disabilities? What about those who can't travel due to that? Do they just get fucked if they can't afford all the tacked on fees and the expected tip?

I believe that price. Doordash bloats the fees when you do delivery. For example, I wanted to get energy drinks from 7-11, but due to traffic, I didn't have time to stop there before work. So I opted to get some delivered through doordash. 15 fucking dollars for 2 energy drinks. It would have cost me $5 had I gone in person.

I still tipped though, because I know they get terrible pay.

I do DoorDash for extra money once in a while and I always reject no tip orders.

Most of the time, its not worth the headache. I lose money, gas, and my time doing a no tip order for two dollars while I could have used that time to serve a customer that actually tips and pays me more money for my services.

This is a business, not a charity. I have zero pity for no tippers. Its simple, pay up or my car is not moving.

That's not how Doordash/Uber Eats works. 2.25 goes to the driver and that's only part of the charge that is placed on the customer. The company may take as much as 10-25% of the order total for themselves when the order is placed. So that order may only result in a revenue of $60-72 to the restaurant that accepted the order depending on the agreed upon percentage rate.

I don't use door dash. I'd rather drive than pay more in fees than my damn food.

And no, I'm not hiding behind disabled people. It's a serious fucking concern. During the peak of the pandemic you had to either risk going inside the store or get delivery. I couldn't fucking afford delivery because of the insane markup so I had to roll the dice walking into stores (Masks work, but they aren't a guarantee).

Even curbside ordering involved extra fees, fees that not everyone can afford. Especially when a lot of people were unemployed because of the pandemic. Absolutely none of those fees go to the little guys.

I didn't, but some people may have had limited options. Like if you can't drive to the store and buy groceries, what are you going to do? Try buying groceries for a few weeks/a month, and then adding a service fee. And a deliver fee. And then 15/20% tip.

How much do people on disability get a month again?
