My friends just got me into this show. I'm almost done with the first season. It's been a LONG time since I've laughed this hard at a new (to me) show.

Not a "fan", but I've watched it begrudgingly since my friend roped me into checking it out. It's... a guilty pleasure of mine.

It's funny. Though some of the episodes/storylines are hit and miss.

Loved seasons 1 and 2 enough to probably consider myself a fan. Need to watch the newer stuff because it looks like there are 5 seasons now, whoa.

I can't stand the art style

It's pretty good, definitely doesn't deserve the hate it gets whenever somebody brings it up. The character designs are kind of an acquired taste, like yeah, they're ugly, but in a way that fits the tone and themes of the show.

You couldn't pay me to watch this shit

but yeah i am a fan! andrew in particular quickly reaches the ross geller "so bad he's good" territory

I'm a fan of the show though I haven't watched it in quite awhile. I may be one or two seasons behind, I remember the first two being best. Nick is easily my favorite character. The first time he tried weed I died. BDB!

I only know the show for how famously bad it's reputation is.

I cant speak first hand for the quality, but I can say for sure that it's one of the most hideously ugly series ever made.

when did this show get a bad reputation exactly? I think it might have a gross reputation, but bad? besides the obviously purposeful bad art style anyway

I've literally never said anything of the sort. It is not even remotely my stance on the FPS genre and never has been.

I'm not sure why you decided that was a tangent to go on, irregardless of you apparently getting me mixed up with someone else.

I dunno, judging a show based on the way it looks (again a purposeful choice) and judging an entire genre of gaming because it has guns in it seemed comparable to me

the show is ugly but it's consistently hilarious and actually makes surprisingly good points about stuff like body confidence and code-switching once in a while in between the grossout comedy

Human Resources is also great

Something looking bad on purpose doesn't mean it's free of criticism for looking bad.

The art style of Big Mouth is such to me, personally, that it is not possible for the show to be of a quality to make up for it. It would have to be the best television series ever made. If I'm not willing to play Clannad for it's art I'm certainly not gonna give this a pass.

It's going to bother a lot of people a lot less, I'm aware, and if they can get past it and feel the rest of the show is worth it then more power to them! Aesthetic is an ENORMOUS chunk of the pie for me in regards to enjoyment of just about anything. There are series that weren't actually very good that I still enjoyed because of how great they looked. I own so many Kenneth Rocafort drawn comic books and this guy can't get paired with a good writer to save his life.

I think this all came to a head for me when Nidhogg 2 got announced, and I knew for a fact that no matter how good the game was that I hated it.

Lastly, I think I may know what stance I had that got you mixed up. All modern military shooters are the same boring old military propaganda crap with no style or substance at all and I actively dislike all of them. That's one I stand by.

because uhhh got some bad news for you even on that narrowing of the take

I've never played a CoD game except for a couple times at a friend's house back in the day, but they also don't particularly seem propagandistic to me? except in the sense of America always being the good guys. but from what I can tell, they certainly don't seem like games about glorifying war and the military? at least not to the degree you're making them out to

but now I'm making assessments on something I haven't experienced. I really have no idea

Spec Ops is definitely an outlier, and the fact that it IS such an outlier and is always the very first thing people go to is kind of the exception that proves the point.

But again...this is REALLY IT, I hate when topics get derailed like this for things I like so I'm not going to do it to other people for things they like. Sorry folks!

I don't play CoD but I remember there being a controversy about one of the recent games being super right wing and straight up denying war crimes perpetrated by US soldiers, claiming that they were actually perpetrated by Russia to make the US look bad.

it just got overshadowed by Battlefield 5 having female characters HMM I WONDER WHY....

Fair enough. I think that's actually a good point. I just haven't played any of the genre really so nothing here to keep me making this argument. It's probably not one I'd disagree all that much with anyway! Even though I think your take is a bit too black-and-white.

but watch Big Mouth it's fantastic and its art style is a perfect fit

the hideousness sis indeed serve a thematic point though - it kind of is meant to feel disorienting, and if you can get past the ugliness of the world then you are also lowering your barriers enough to keep in its overall crassness and grossness and it hurts harder

rick and morty is also pretty hideous, though there i assume ita main purpose is to be easier to draw since there are so many insane concepts in it

Rick and morty is nowhere close as ugly. Its not pretty, but it is completely respectable and they do pretty good work modeling all of the different alien species.

Big mouth is horrendous, It is painful to look at anyone

The first two seasons I enjoyed very much. The third season was pretty good but took a step down. Season 4 was bad and it killed my interest in season 5 and beyond.
