I mean recently there was an agent that was allowed to take notes on top secret documents and she accidentally didnt store them in the proper bag and she was promptly arrested. I don't know if it's so much treating him with kids gloves as it is making sure they're crossing their Ts and dotting their Is. "If you take a shot at the king, you best not miss" sort of thing. The potential ramifications of this are massive (both in the event he's arrested and the event he slips away), so I'd assume the DOJ wants to make sure that whatever case they present is so rock solid that there's no room to deny it (for a sane person).

But I'd imagine that with this now possibly involving a U.S. ally, this escalates to a whole new level. If it was just us being sold out, it'd be one thing. Now that a foreign government is involved, they're gonna be applying the pressure heavy on the U.S. to do something about it

1. While Trump hasn't gotten into any criminal trouble yet, he has faces consequences for his actions. He was not elected again. I would almost guarantee he has lost more of those swing voters since due to January 6th and his behavior since the election.

2. I don't think we have any evidence to state the DoJ is treating Trump with kid gloves. (But I do wonder what they're doing with regards to January 6th.)

With all the blatant illegal treasonous shit he has done so far, how much more carefully do they have to work? Waiting over a fucking year to get back top secret documents that could get spies killed seems really fucking stupid.

It's super cool knowing that if a future President feels like selling our nuclear secrets to the highest bidder he OR SHE can be sure the DOJ will give them at least two years to make the sale.

The DoJ hasn't been involved until this year. NARA was asking for the documents back all through last year, and they referred the case to the DoJ when they got some documents back in January.

It's about closing out any possible routes for Trump to weasel his way out. Rushing to prosecute could mean missing a technicality that allows Trump to get away scot-free, and that means further emboldening his rabid fanbase and the GOP politicians protecting him. It also paints a huge target on the FBI's back from Trump's allies.

Any shot taken at Trump has to be a direct hit and it has to kill. We cannot risk the opportunity to nail Trump to the cross because we were too hasty, given that Trump has the ability to narrowly skirt consequences and become even more powerful for it.

One of the documents in that photo that was published last week was dated May 9th, 2018, which was the day after Trump withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal. It's just a guess, but I'd say it could be related to that.

There's also the consideration that NARA truly didn't know what Trump had. While it was clear he took things with him, there were also numerous reports throughout his presidency that presidential records were not handled appropriately. I'm not sure if we'll ever find out the truth, but it could have been something where NARA was trying to determine where specific documents were and only knew they were with Trump when he returned the first batch earlier this year.

Yes, but again they didn't fully know what he took. If all he ended up taking were magazine covers and personal letters from Kim Jong Un, nothing would have happened in the end.

Should they have gone faster? Absolutely. But I do think the speed argument overall is overblown.
