I've never worked some place like that. That's.. A lot of paid time for free. I'm technically salaried but I don't set my own schedule.

It's going to really revolutionize my pto because I usually take half days off anyways and it drains my pto for longer vacations.

What kind of pto policies do you guys have? I wish I worked some place with unlimited pto. But this is actually pretty decent too.

I accumulate vacation days that I get more and more strongly encouraged to make use of over time (they refuse to pay it out). Normally that annoyed me (I'd rather work) but I've been working a ton of unpaid overtime lately and can't wait to take some time off.

So can you just work a half day every day

They aren't all the same but I worked one place with "unlimited" PTO and it sucked. After a certain number of days, any more than that had to get approved at C/VP level, so it just felt like having limited PTO. Except the downside is it was use it or lose it, so you don't roll over and you don't get paid any of it out when you terminate employment. I think there have been a lot of studies that unlimited PTO is usually actually done for the benefit of the employer

I've had a job where as long as the work got done, I could do whatever. But when it's tourist season, that kinda goes out the door.

My Dad was a chief radio engineer. Didn't have to work at anyone's pace. Just make sure the radio station and local affiliates were taken care of. But he had a skill set that can't really be taught anymore. It was a transition time in the industry when everything when digital and computerized. The new guys got sent different places where he got all the good contract work he wanted too. He had a few problems with late payers, but that's all I knew. Some of the jobs require outsourcing supervised heavy physical labor at times too. He tried to get me to do it one time. He wanted a 4ft trench circle connected to a triangle dug out. I gave out not even half way in. It was a lot of work.

My girlfriend's sales job requires her to service clients and hunt for new ones then drive long distance with equipment and meds. She also trains new people. I get to drive her sometimes so we can be together. It's fun when she isn't busy and on the laptop every second.

Nah, I can't abuse it. So I can't do that but a half day on Friday when my work is done seems like it's okay to do. Which is fine with me.

yeah it just sounds like a way not to have a stored value so that at any given time the company doesn't owe the employee anything. and then they can judge you as they see fit for requesting some.

Presumably, if that interfered with getting one's work done, they'd be spoken to about it and potentially written up for not getting their work done rather than abusing their vacation. If they still got their work done, they could indeed just work half days, which is really how most jobs ought to be.

There are quite a few benefits to it from the employer side. One of the biggest is that, without the pressure to use limited PTO, employees often feel guilty enough about taking time off and inconveniencing their teams that they just don't take it.

My company is pretty standard but my department is only 4 people, and our department head has her own policy lol. She doesn't require us to do pto for anything under 2 hours, and is also okay with lunch being 90 minutes, even longer if we notify ahead of time. So effectively you can combine the two and be out for 3-4 hours in the middle of the day if you have errands to run, or leave a couple hours early if you want to head out before EOD.

She also is pretty flexible about start/end times. Work starts at 8:30 but she often doesn't come in until 8:45, and the rest of us are about the same. And we can leave 15-20 minutes early if we want. She also sometimes comes in 60-90 minutes early and leaves 60-90 minutes early, and allows us to do that too. So you could get to work an hour early and then leave 3 hours before EOD.

company also doesnt have a WFH policy but she lets us stay home if were having a busy home life day or just dont feel well.

Its pretty chill. Just as long as everything is getting done.

im also salaried but dont get to choose my sched

I'd like this. It'd be nice to know if I get sick for a week or something it wouldn't make it hard to get a week's vacation as well some time that year.

But I actually get many days off so as long as I don't abuse things here I'll be able to be set

I earn 8 hours of vacation and 4 hours of sick time every pay period. Government gigs have pretty generous leave IMO.

Same, except I've been around for 20+ years so I get 9 (or is it 9.5?) hours of vacation and 4 of sick. Regardless it's more than I can really use, particularly when working fully remotely and I can take 20 minute breaks to do...anything I need to do. Or hour-long if nothing is pressing.

Tried to edit it, but Im actually in the 6 hr bracket. Either way, like you, its more vacation time than I ever use. Especially when we get all those nifty little time codes for shit like VA appointments, in my case.

I work for the USDA right now but with my accounting degree I thought about seeing if I could snatch up one of those IRS positions theyre talking about.

Nice, I didnt realise you had a new job. Whatcha doing?

My place is pretty flexible. Pretty much an unwritten rule that any appointments less than a couple of hours or so are fair game and you dont have to use any of your holiday days. Which is good cause we only get 26 a year.

The only caveat (again unwritten) is if you have to spend a couple hours away during a work day itll ideally be early morning or late afternoon so youre in the office during the core workday hours.

But for example I got an appointment from 1030-12pm today and havent had to take any time off. Pretty good

I have unlimited PTO, but it is worded as "discresionary". Basically, your team/manager has to approve it. My team is pretty lax about it though (I am the boss, LOL) and my manager just wants to make sure that we are covered support wise (I.E. the whole team can't be out on the same day).

I get about 2-1/2 hours of PTO each week. I've only used 16 hours since I started working there a year ago, so I've accumulated about 110 hours and the limit is 128. I'm probably going to let it hit 120 then start taking a few hours off each week. Or maybe go home a half hour early every day.
