I used to. like everyone. and inevitably finish the game with a bagfull of super-awesome potions that went unused.

BUT

I changed my mentality on this and i now use healing items with impunity. Shit, I'll use a megalixer on a non-boss mob late in a dungeon if it means preserving my mages' mana for the boss.

it really truly is a new sense of freedom, to stop hoarding your potions and just use them. JUST DO IT!!!! --Shia Lebouff

Not always, games like the Tales of games or Shin Megami games make sure you really want to at times.

for me, if i havent used a potion in the dungeon i acquired it, i'm a failure of a human

for context: I'm a lean manufacturing, JIT inventory, professional. IYKYK, and if you don't google it. So maybe my work life bleeded into my gaming life

I always exhaust healing spells, then MP restoration, then HP restoration, simply because that's optimal. Plus, healing items are usually WAY overtuned in most RPGs, so there's just no need to use the busted ones half the time.

Interesting. Do you have a game/series in mind for this order? Because every RPG is different. For example, I am doing a technical FF6 run rn, where i am basically doing everything by-the-book and trying to "100%" it. It's clear to me that MP is the most scarse resource in this game, so its actually better to use postions over a cure2 spell. Or, are you talking about a "general, universal approach" to games based on your playstyle/fun factor?

Never intentionally. If I need a strong healing item, I'll use it. I tend to do well enough with healing magic though.

rpgs are generally way too easy for me to care about holding onto strong items

except for unchained blades, which had only one revive item in the first dungeon and the first boss was the hardest part of the game, i usually just use items whenever i feel like it because they're usually really easy to get

smt throws items at you like candy and they also sell for a fuckton so i usually just sell them

Nah, I use healing items throughout the games.

Now the items that you use to give yourself resistances or buffs I tend to save for when I "really need them" but those times like never come lol.

I use the more common stuff frequently. Stuff like Elixirs I may use if needed, but I don't usually end up using them.

I've got hoarding tendencies in real life that get so much worse in games. I don't just save healing items, I save fucking everything, especially anything that can't easily be farmed or bought.

dude this is 100% my point lol

RPG game design got us fretting about the future too much! A full-heal potion is better value than a 2x cure spell, which costs more gold to replenish the MP than what the healing item would have!

I woulda beat final fantasy 8 without touching the junction system had I remembered I had several hero drinks I never used. I got the final boss all the way to her monologe which basically means you won if you can just survive till she's done talking.

I got mad quit the game for months came back started over learned the junction system kicked ass. Then loaded up my original save and saw those hero drinks.

There's hoarding potions then there's hoarding the best potions thinking you'll face an even tougher battle later and will need everyone of them possibly

I always hoard the Silver Lights until the end. But then I finish the game with like half of them left.

I used to do that in JRPGs all the time, mostly because of the 'storing powerful and very hard to get items for a rainy day that never comes' thing but also because I personally thought that most of the common consumable items tend to be pretty weak in effect. However after playing some games where the items tend to be more powerful and you can work to get all the healing items and be able to build a stock of them, even the most powerful ones, at endgame somewhat easily, I was able to overcome that way of thinking and I now tend to use healing items much more freely without guilt.

Final Fantasy 3 is best experienced by hoarding all your megalixers till the end of the game so you'll be functionally invulnerable after getting to The World of Darkness lol. That last boss gauntlet was surprisingly brutal >_>

But outside of that yeah I agree
