When I was growing up, not most, but all of my friends had an N64. I only knew of a couple kids who had a Playstation back then. Hell, I was only vaguely familiar with the Playstation brand until the PS2 was released. How the hell did the N64 seem so massively popular, yet the PS1 outsold it by 3x?

PS1 games were $40 new, while N64 games launched at $50-70.

probably because you're American.
Nintendo did have strong presence until N64, but in other parts of the planet PS1 dominates, though mostly because piracy.

The PS1 was a shitty 3D engine platform at the time.
But that's what people were into.
Remember the PS1 was a Nintendo reject.

It's a shame. PlayStation might of stopped Nintendo from creating the worst controller known to man.

Yeah n64 was more common where I was too.

Might just be america, would have to see sales #s by country I guess.

I guess as I was a bit older, young teens before the ps2 came out ps1 was getting more popular in my demo, and I picked up a used one to play rpgs as the 64 was majorly deficient

Exactly. I was about 17 when the PS1 launched & everyone roughly my age got the PS1 because it had a huge & awesome library. The N64 had a few big 1st party games but pretty much nothing else.

Out of all my friends & acquaintances, there were dozens of people who had Playstations & I only knew 1 person that had an N64.

Good point. If an adult was into video games they were more likely to be into the PS1 too. I remember talking about Syphon Filter with my teacher back in the day.

Actually I might add that back in pre-internet days, we all still had cliques or console war kid shit in our lives so while one kid lived in a circle where N64 was popular, it was the other way around for another with the Playstation.

Both console software have been viewed equally fondly for design, concept, and/or technical quality (mostly playstation).

PS1 had the added benefit of being a CD player and that was enough for some people to tip the balance.

PS2 doubled down on this with the DVD player and PS3 with a bluray and multimedia interface

Makes sense. I was born in '88, and everyone I knew talked about N64 and had one.

Then, as they started becoming teens, they started getting PS2's and Xboxes.

393 Seems like a lot, but in comparison to other consoles over the last 40 years, it isn't.

NES: 716
Genesis: 713
SNES: 1,757
PS1: 3,061
PS2: 4,380
XBox: 991

You get the point.

Who the fuck specifically designed those mini games anyway? That person(s) sucks and clearly no one beta tested that shit.

I had a N64 and my friend had a PSOne, but we shared them so we basically had both.

That said, I find N64 games in general to be more genre-defining than PSOne. Star Fox 64, GoldenEye, Ocarina of Time, Mario 64. All significantly better than genre peers from that era.
