Isn't it odd? The original XBOX didn't do very well but I also feel like a lot of people had one.

It's all relative.

Xbox sold well in North America, but it only beat the GameCube by a little bit.

Combined, all other 3 competitors couldn't touch PS2 sales #'s.

Ye, that's how selection bias works. Much like with the N64 versus PS1 what demographic and where you lived made a marked difference as to which systems you came into contact with.

The Xbox was a beast in its day. Was built on Dreamcast pedigree.

The game cube was for Nintendo people. Though it does have some legit games.

The PS2 was a reasonable console, but the DVD capabilities were huge.

The Dreamcast is The Little Engine that Could.
The Dreamcast was one of the most loveable little consoles ever.

The Dreamcast was a victim of Piracy by letting games run off of non GD-ROM's, it screwed itself out of game sales.

By the time Dreamcast fixed that vulnerability, it was too late, the damage was done.

Sega's profits were so bad, that it was about to go bankrupt.

N64 was the king for multiplayer games. The only good multiplayer games I remember playing on the PSX were the Twisted Metal games.

This was the beginning of kiddy insults. N64 was fully of kiddy games. Everything was nice and cute and soft.

Then PS1 had Tom Raider, FF7 (which was very risque for the time), RE, MGS, and other stuff.

Also n64 had like 10 good games, while PS1 had dozens. In many genres. While N64 had platformers and racing games.

Proof is in the pudding for hardware sales

PS1 literally outsold all competitors combined.

Yeah, that may be true.

But it wasn't enough to save the console, and while 2nd place allowed Nintendo to survive, it just bought them time until they made their money makers in terms of hardware sales with the Nintendo Wii 2x generations down the line.

The piracy thing is mostly a myth. Yeah people knew of it, but piracy was super easy on a lot of other consoles and it never actually relevantly impacted sales in the grand sum thing of things. Most people just don't pirate. Instead it all boiled down to the console sales. If no one bought your console, no one will buy your games. And consoles that sold worse than the Wii U are in that category by default.

Eh, there were "adult" games and there were a fair number of hidden-ish gems. The problem is that there was an *insane* drop in quality from the big titles that everyone knows about to about 99% of the rest of the console's library so finding the couple that were actually hidden in there tended to be a lot more luck than anything else. Even series' that were generally pretty solid, such as Castlevania, were pretty awful for their N64 outing. And even then many of them really were a bit of a "time and a place" (mainly in that their fun came pretty hard from multiplayer) or they were more just an alternate version in that they were already on another console (ie. PS1). Battle Tanx: Global Assault comes to mind in both categories as a good chunk of its fun came from goofing off with friends while at the same time it was also on PS1 (though the N64 version was superior, FWIW).

It was extremely easy to get your Xbox/PS1/2 chipped to play pirated games, game magazines even had ads about it.
Heck, the PS1 even had a device that you inserted in the Serial port that allowed you to play pirated games.

RPGs on PS1 were like the biggest games of that era that weren't Mortal Kombat games or Mortal Kombat clones or something like RE. You'd only maybe not know that if you only played Nintendo and only talked to kids who had Nintendo.

Adult games for N64:
GoldenEye
Perfect Dark
RE2
Conker's Bad Fur Day
South Park (even if it was a dismal game)

Some good games for N64:
GoldenEye
Perfect Dark
Conker's Bad Fur Day
Doom 64
Turok 64
Ocarina of Time
Majora's Mask
Mario Kart 64
Ogre Battle 64
Star Fox 64
etc
N64 had more than "just 10 good games" if you would quit the PS1 fanboy bias and actually look.
