more colors, more sprites, mode 7, better sound.
Those don't necessarily make a better system. Definitely not more than CPU stuffs, anyways.

Also, the Genesis was 10 channel sound and the SNES was 8.

The N64 port of Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine is probably the best looking game thanks to Factor 5s custom microcode. The realtime lightning is amazing by that times standard, and it looks much better than the PC version.
Sadly it is extremely glitchy and got a sound engine that can randomly crash the game.

You then played the two Zelda game or Mario 64 after they all went home.

That's all the N64 was good for.

n64 had the marketing down, especially at big stores like toys r us. i think if you visited that a lot you'd think the n64 was everywhere.

but no yeah, everyone i knew had a ps1 but only a few ever had the n64. some of those classics really blew everyone's mind at the times.

I'm a late Gen X'er & none of my friends had N64s. We all had PS1s.

Final Fantasy, Resident Evil, Tomb Raider, Silent Hill, Tenchu, Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Tekken... pretty much none of that was on N64. Squaresoft dropping Nintendo was a huge deal in particular-- that pushed pretty much all JRPGs to Sony, which is still largely true 25 years later.

Literally the only N64 games I even remotely cared about were Mario Party 2, Mario Party 3, Ogre Battle 64, Mario Golf, Pokemon Puzzle League, and Super Smash Bros.
Everyone is saying it was MoRe ComMunAl as if kids weren't playing 2 player Tony Hawk, Twisted Metal, Super Puzzle Fighter, etc. on PS1

The real communal system was Sega Genesis. As far as N64 and PSX they felt about same-ish in that regard.

Ogre Battle's not dead. They're literally making a remaster of Tactics Ogre right now that's releasing in November.
But his point was still wrong, though. Ogre Battle 64 was N64 exclusive -- but most westerners played Tactics Ogre and March of the Black Queen on PSX, and Knight of Lodis was such an insignificant title on the GBA.

Eh, his point was correct. His argument was what was wrong. Beyond his argument it's pretty clear that Nintendo is the big winner for JRPGs by a comfortable margin. There are some solid PS4/5 JRPGs, but the vast majority are ones like P5R or DQ11 where they also exist on the Switch and those are also the "big winners" for the console itself. Especially if you also include PC as a viable way to play the JRPGs as an alternative as between Switch and PC there aren't exactly any JRPGs worth talking about otherwise. Inversely there are plenty of ones exclusive to Nintendo, Triangle Strategy, Xeno 3, etc., that are both in the "are system sellers" and "isn't available anywhere else" (though in the case of Triangle Strategy it is likely to get a PC version eventually).

It's the ps1 for me. My family had both at the time, and I spent most of my time on the ps1. I can think of hundreds of games worth checking out for the ps1, versus a couple dozen on the n64. N64 had a very limited selection of game genres for the system, while the ps1 has games from practically every genre imaginable.

He was pointing out that current Nintendo was doing good on the JRPG front as a reply to the "true 25 years later" comment. It would also not make any sense to stick it at the PS1 or SNES time frame as Disgaea didn't come out until the PS2. Heck, it wouldn't even make sense to even put it as a "win for Nintendo" unless you were explicitly talking about the Switch as that is the only time they've moved over to Nintendo. Ogre Battle is the only one that you really could view as a "back then" game series, but as you pointed out they're coming out with a remake as a Switch exclusive (as far as I know) + Triangle Strategy has a lot in common with Ogre Battle and could be argued as a straight spiritual sequel.

the super nes was probably the best console ever, if you take time into context.

it had the Nintendo first party games and most 3rd parties too (square, capcom, Konami, etc, you name it)

I can see the argument for SNES being the best console ever - but I'm strictly talking about RPGs. PSX beats SNES when it comes to RPGs. Maybe if you're including Japan exclusives it's a bit closer.

PSX had the US release of Tactics Ogre, the superior version of Ogre Battle, Final Fantasy Tactics, Final Fantasy 7, Breath of Fire 3 (the best game in the franchise), the Arc the Lad Collection, Suikoden 1 and 2, SOTN, Diablo, the only US release in the Torneko Mystery Dungeon series, Vandal Hearts 1 and 2 -- and tons and tons of other above-average JRPGs (the early Persona games, Saiyuki Journey West, tons of Lunar games, Brigandine, etc.)

PS1 was everywhere. N64 had a much smaller library and the games were co expensive. Despite Nintendo doing good with their first party lineup the system had a very shallow library. People talk about 10 N64 games generally. With the PS1 there were at least a hundred good to great games. It was a no brainer the PS1 dominated.

The PS1 also had ports of 5 of the first 6 FF games as well as Chrono Trigger. You can't argue for Switch ports and ignore all the ports that other consoles get.

Also, Star Ocean 2, Chrono Cross, Dragon Quest 7... the N64 had nothing as far as RPGs go when the genre exploded in popularity.
