It would have been a terrible idea in Nixon's time, but we live in a post-truth world now. Incontrovertible empirical evidence that Trump did a no-no isn't actually going to hurt his reputation among his followers because all he has to do is deny it and they'll accept that as gospel no matter how strong the evidence is.

I don't think you understood what I wrote.

Trump is just about my least favorite person in the world. But anyone who thinks they're going to take him down over document retention, i.e. the 558th worst thing he's ever done, is deluded. If you actually have evidence that he sold nuclear secrets I'd be listening, but I certainly haven't heard that. He kept documents as trophies because he's a selfish bastard and he keeps what he wants.

Keep the focus on the attempted coup and the truly awful stuff, not this.

Dude you're fucking out of it. Yea people were surprised something happened after years of little action on his crimes. The world already knew Trump was unfit to be president, the world didn't need to be shown it.

The plan didn't backfire because there was no plan. He broke the law and repeatedly rejected all efforts to get him in line with the law. He literally did the "but her emails" shit you clowns were complaining about for a decade now.

The FBI has not had their credibility tainted, the only people upset are Trumpsters and there is literally nothing you can do to gain credibility with people who reject reality and maintain your own integrity.

Also what the fuck is wrong with you? Do you actually think MAGA gear was put in storage? Is this a joke? People wear maga shit every fucking day. This is how I know you're completely divorced from reality.

That is the correct example to use: I hope you're right. But there were limits to Capone's economic/scare power. Trump's economic/political power does not appear to have those limits. Can you REALLY imagine him going to jail or becoming unable to run in 2024 because of this? Unfortunately you need to attack him as a potential candidate and keep his worst characteristics in clear focus. THE MAN ATTEMPTED (AND IS STILL ATTEMPTING) A COUP! By comparison document retention is nothing: Trump's people are laughing that this is distracting the public from the Jan 6th committee...remember that?

for some reason, attempting treason is a lesser crime than having eyes only documents, because depending on what they are, that branch of the government is going after it, and since it would likely be the military branch, they have a lot more weight to swing than, say, some congressional comittee filled with allies.

because military secrets are more important than anything, they're essentially the holy grail, in all countries. because as soon as an enemy knows one of your secrets, it's now a weapon to be used by them specifically against you.

You're trying to act like this isn't a big deal. Even on Fox News they are talking about how he might have had copies of the nuclear launch plans that a president has to select if it ever came down to mutually assured annihilation.

There is a lot of legitimate criticism that the government classifies stuff that doesn't need to be classified or is too slow in de-classifying documents that no longer need that classification. Those aren't the documents he is accused of apparently just leaving sitting in a public hallway in the case of some of the boxes.

Him potentially violating the espionage act is a big fucking deal. What exactly is your goal in downplaying it? You think things are worse? So what? Al Capone went down for taxes, Trump can go down for "but her emails" and the beautiful irony that entails.

Making a huge deal of it BEFORE something like that is proven, however (and when it's still merely document retention-gate) plays right into his hands. "Look how worked up they're getting up over a couple of pieces of paper: all of this other stuff they're saying is equally exaggerated"
