it is extremely illegal to keep what he kept, even for him.
Agreed: so are the 557 other worse things he's done. It doesn't mean that any of it is OK, but it does unfortunately mean that - in the US - if you are rich/powerful enough you aren't going to get burned for it.

al capone was caught because of tax fraud, not all the heinous shit he did. tax fraud.
That is the correct example to use: I hope you're right. But there were limits to Capone's economic/scare power. Trump's economic/political power does not appear to have those limits. Can you REALLY imagine him going to jail or becoming unable to run in 2024 because of this? He SHOULD be unable, certainly, but the coup (or hamfisted collusion, or sexual assault, or various frauds, or insert terrible thing here) should have made him ineligible already.

Unfortunately you need to attack him as a potential candidate and keep his worst characteristics in clear focus. THE MAN ATTEMPTED (AND IS STILL ATTEMPTING) A COUP! By comparison document retention is nothing: Trump's people are laughing that this is distracting the public from the Jan 6th committee...remember that?

If would be great if he could get convicted of any of the things he deserves to be convicted of, but I'm not holding my breath.
