The Prince of Egypt The Plague Dogs Had a lot to say about this batch. One thing all of these films share is an incredible sense of vision and scope. Wait that's two things. Okay. The Little Mermaid is great! It's just, uh, not for me. It's extremely well-made, well-told, and has every right to stand so high in the Mouse's pantheon. I think there's a case to be made that this movie set a poor, unfortunate trend in the animation world leading into the 90s. It sort of cemented Disney as the studio that makes 'princess movies' and, as reductive as that sounds, it holds a lot more water when you consider all the lesser studios playing follow the leader with their 'princess movies'. Add a dash of market saturation and abracadabra; now all the stuffed shirts are too good to take animation seriously. Its musical numbers are definitely saccharine as hell--Under the Sea especially is painful in large doses. It's best enjoyed in a vacuum; forget everything you know about Disney and just enjoy this very sweet story about a girl, a prince, and eight legs. Once you do that, The Little Mermaid is great! https://youtu.be/vrUXsJwW5aU The Prince of Egypt is one of like five 10/10 movies in the bracket (and there's another one coming up tomorrow, if you can believe it) and can be enjoyed regardless of your personal convictions. At its core, this is a tragedy of two brothers; put at odds by the inconceivable weight of their responsibilities. Let's not forget that one of them is being led by the hand of God. Several scenes that I could have chosen for this one, not limited to "Deliver Us", the burning bush, "The Plagues", and the parting of the Red Sea. All brilliant, but it's the Hebrew genocide that comes as the first wham moment of the movie. The moment where Seti and Moses embrace--where look of resolve becomes one of disgust, and then total disbelief as the deception comes to light. There's expressive character animation, like what we saw in An Extremely Goofy Movie, but then there's expressive in the minute sense, which is so much harder to communicate. Animator James Baxter's praises are sung far and wide, and it's not just because horse move good. On that note, please watch Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron--it is a crime that movie was snubbed from the bracket.
