Amandla Stenberg is calling out a critic.

The 23-year-old star of Bodies Bodies Bodies DMed New York Times film critic Lena Wilson following the publication of her movie review.

Lena shared the DM publicly, and now theres plenty of discussion on social media about what Amandla said to the critic.

In the review, Lena wrote The only thing that really sets Bodies Bodies Bodies apart is its place in the A24 hype machine, where it doubles as a 95-minute advertisement for cleavage and Charli XCXs latest single.

ur review is great, maybe if you had gotten ur eyes off my tits you couldve watched the movie! Amandla wrote to Lena.

always weird when the homophobia is coming from inside the house but this is something, Lena added.

making an observation that a movie contains superfluous amounts of cleavage is absolutely fair and does not suggest, whatsoever, that the viewer didn't "watch the movie". GTFO

I see absolutely no reason to care about any of this.

I think trying to frame this has homophobia is kinda silly. Like if a reviewer is gonna draw attention to the body of an actor it should done so in a way that says something about the movie. Her comment doesn't really say anything. It just acknowledges that the actress had boobs.

If it came from a male reviewer people would absolutely be raking him over the coals for objectifying the actress. And rightly so.

And as a young actress I'm sure Amandla is not exactly appreciative of her work being boiled down to "boobs". That's a kind of image that can be hard to shake.

Why is "superfluous cleavage" worth noting? Like at least explain why it's worth pointing out. Simply saying the movie has a lot cleavage is kinda meaningless in itself.

The sentence literally explains why it's worth nothing.

Because there's nothing else in the film that is.

i took the quote from the review (found in the OP) to basically mean "this movie doesn't have much going for it other than boobs and a catchy pop song". ie it's shallow.

i find that superfluous cleavage, or sex in general, is used to draw audiences in when there isn't much else going on.

I mean based off that picture, theyre not great

idk how it's homophobic to tell someone to stop staring at their tits when that person made a point about all the cleavage a movie focused on.

not to say that the movie didn't focus on cleavage (I haven't seen it), but a person coming to the movie's defense might not see it in that way.

Now, in a new video posted on her Instagram story today (18 August), the actor has explained her actions, claiming that she was only trying to be funny.
Im receiving a lot of commentary on the internet for being a very naughty girl and for sending a DM that I thought was hilarious, Stenberg began. Theres a film critic and her name is Lena Wilson. She described [Bodies Bodies Bodies] as a 95-minute advertisement for cleavage, which I thought was hilarious. Im proud that a piece of work I was a part of was described as such in such a renowned publication.

The critic is saying it's the film's standout feature.

The specifics of this story don't really matter imo. All that matters is that when an artist responds to a negative review and gets defensive, that's extremely tacky, classless, and cringey. You ignore poor reviews, you don't contact the reviewer and try to start a fight. No matter what the content of the review.

I have it seen it so I don't know if this the case or not.

But if seems to be just like how people use to complain when there were random nude scene in a Jason movie or something. To think that the writer is just looking at her boobs just cuz seems odd. But like I said,I don't know.

I most definitely do too. The actress was angry at a bad review, not because she thought she was being ogled by a lesbian or something.

iirc, the actress is also lesbian.
