How concerned are you about the Social Security system?

Let's start here, when SS was first introduced, the very first recipients had never paid into the system back then. SS starting out was an attempt to solve the long range problem of economic security for elderly people who were either too old or too sick to work.

As it stands now most Americans closing in on retirement age do not have enough money stashed away in any sort of retirement fund and as we've seen we have people 65 and over who still have to work to make ends meet as costs rise for the elderly in terms of medical bills, prescription drugs etc so America still hasn't solved the issue of economic security for elderly people and only a handful of people will ever be able to put enough into any type of retirement account and most will fall short.

I don't think it is a sustainable program long term (the fact that you get more out of it the more you put into it, which runs antithetical to every other welfare program is the main problem), but it has been hammered in my head for the last 20 years that you shouldn't count on it so I am not going to.

It is also funny to me that they dropped the max earning requirement once you start collecting. Like they realized that forcing people to retire at 70 was a bad idea.

I'm not really worried because it's one of those things that will immediately be at the forefront of being "fixed" if it ever is in any real danger of going away. It's too important to go away without mass revolts.

It is only going to get worse since the population is stagnating and about to go into decline. It works sort of like a pyramid with the assumption that the generation before you will be a larger working force than the generation drawing benefits. When that triangle flips, I anticipate issues.

I will illegally die!

That said, SS is supposed to be a life raft. Mainly for those who couldn't build a retirement ship (or yacht). Theoretically if families in the US weren't relegated to being wage slaves with no benefits, SS wouldn't need to be a thing, but...

Somewhat concerned. I have a 401K but unlike most people I started it sort of late in my career.
I know it's better than nothing but I'll probably work past retirement age at this point is my guess.
