Bill is just being Bill. While I never held NDT as some sort of ultimate authority on science stuff, I think he's great at being one of those guys who help bridge the science world and the normal everyday world and we need people like that.

OP isnt from a standup special. It is from a podcast. So if one finds humor in it great but that isnt the goal in every bit of the podcast.

I never liked NDT even before he became a more public face. He's a hypocrite.

For years he was controversial for removing Pluto from the national planetary diorama. He said he was taking a stand and that the IAU was wrong to still consider Pluto a planet. People rightfully criticized him for being negligent in his duty as an educator to the public by not teaching what was at the time scientific consensus. If he wanted to bring up his issues, do it in a peer-review setting.

When the IAU demoted Pluto, he mocked his critics and anyone against who disagreed with the decision. He said that the critics and the public needed to move on and that the IAU decision was final. As if he hadn't spent the previous 7 years ignoring his own advice. He also took credit for the demotion even though it was Chad Trujillo and Mike Brown's work which led to the conference.

When Tyson put together an exhibit showing the relative size of planets at the Hayden Planetarium in 2000, he decided not to include Pluto.
"We wanted to be sure that the exhibits had high shelf life," he says, adding that the exhibit was a $250,000 investment. "So we had the need to look carefully at what was going on in the solar system. That's what led us to organize the solar system as like properties rather than as an enumeration of cosmic objects, as it's so commonly taught in school."
Other astrophysicists said Tyson was off base. Museum visitors noticed Pluto was missing and sent in vitriolic letters. And when it was reported in The New York Times in January 2001 that the exhibit did not include Pluto, Tyson says he received a "new wave of hate mail."

I am not against Pluto being demoted. I view NDT is a hypocrite who used his role as an educator of the public as a way to argue his own misgivings. Then complained when people tried to do the same thing he did. Both were wrong in how they went about it.

Those other astrophysicists were wrong.
