Like a strategy game that adds a certain faction you can't play without, or an RPG with an improved battle system.

What games are the best that you can't really go back to, specifically because a more recent version is just that much better?

I've heard it said that playing Persona 5 makes going back to 3 and 4, both incredible games, extremely difficult.

DDR Extreme - loved it back in the day but it feels outright archaic after playing more modern versions.

Probably a lot of other rhythm games too.

Funny enough, Stardew Valley makes going back to some older Harvest Moon games suck.

I think my answer is actually Super Mario Maker (Wii U). Due to a combination of circumstances leading to its success, it had a certain atmosphere and community style that I don't think can ever be replicated again (even its sequel SMM2 did not feel this particular way that I'm describing, due the the fact that it was coming up from prior knowledge of SMM1). Plus differences in physics and objects between the two games (spikes are normal obstacles in 1 but have insanely bloated hitboxes in 2, eliminating most of their former usages).

I had over 1100 hours in SMM1, but despite strong arguments that SMM2 is a better video game (which I even agree with), I only managed around 550 hours and at least part of that was the missing spark.

Edit: I classify this game as "replaced" because Miiverse is closed (can't comment on courses) and they removed the ability to upload courses. The eventual closure of playing online completely is inevitable.

Resident Evil 6 mercenaries actually made RE4 / RE5 mercs seem really slow in comparison. I still like them but the movement in RE6 Mercs is just too much fun.

Same thing with DMC5 Bloody Palace. I just love the speed, movesets, and animations of that game and it makes DMC3's and 4's feel almost a little outdated.

From what ive seen, that's only if you play Persona 5 first. I still prefer Persona 4 to it myself.

The answer for me probably has to be some form of Smash or Street Fighter.

This is pretty much the entirety of the Tales series for me. I've tried going back to some of the old 3D Tales games and I can't do it because of all the improvements later games have made to the battle system.

I really did like Tales of Symphonia when it was originally released and did everything possible in it, but I can't go back to it anymore.

Totally agree, SMM1 is my answer to this.
