Nothing of value was lost

Video got taken down

The test footage was incredible. Without those visuals though it's a lot harder to get into it.

That was fun and now I'm angrier that we got screwed out of this for Emoji Movie instead

Would there have been an audience for a traditional styled Popeye movie in 2013? I feel like Popeye is one of the stereotypical "old cartoons" that most people know about as being a thing from before their time, but I don't know if they would be willing to watch a straight-played, full length movie in the current century.

Not that what we got in exchange was any better, but still.

Going through it, that sure was going to be an animated movie released in the mid 2010's with some nostalgic pop offs for weirdos who love Popeye.

As a weirdo who loves Popeye, the homages to Goonieland and Dream Walkin' were so GOOD and, while rote, the performance and portrayal of Olive was really fun to see, and what they were planning for some of this animation was really worth it.

Not a MASSIVE loss and it is weird to see Popeye of all characters as a "nobody wants me uwu" sad protag with how much he usually owns his ugliness, but it's good to see something come of this in some form.

Absolutely not, that's why it was canned.

But it's also looking at it wrong, this was a niche pet project for huge animation fans made by an industry great. Weirdly enough this concept is a couple years ahead of its time. This probably would have worked way better now in the streaming wars era, now that millennials who grew up with Dexter's Lab and Samurai Jack are the Marketable Demographic, and CG animation is getting more ambitious with projects like Spider-Verse, Arkane, Mitchels vs Machines, and Pixar's recent stuff (minus Lightyear).

Conceptually anyways. I haven't been able to watch it yet, hopefully I can find it somewhere else...

edit: I just realized two of the movies I named as pushing the envelope were by the same studio Tartakovsky was at making Hotel Transylvania. lmao, I'd be livid if I was him. But it looks like he got two original movies out of the deal

Yeah what happened was that a new executive took over at Sony Pictures Digital Production who probably wanted a bunch of changes Tartakovsky didnt agree with, and then that huge Sony hack occurred which threw things into greater turmoil.

There was a rumor that King Features decided to just do it themselves and may have even gotten Tartakovsky on board (Popeye had been his dream project) but I dont know if it was ever officially announced or confirmed
