On a broad spectrum, I usually can't really get impressed with English covers. There's some vocal showcase as far as range, but the when the pronunciation falls short, it's like why bother? There's just the reality that there exist better bilingual performers in the industry. Lily's "Finesse" and "Survivor" covers being a fresh example, and she's a rookie.

This doesn't shape my opinion of BM. It's not what I'd call a marketable approach, though.

I was thinking of making a top 10 list or something but I haven't listened to everything I want to from last year yet. Interesting that most of my fave songs from last year off the top of my head aren't even on this list, but I still like pretty much all of the girl songs you listed.

• NewJeans has been #1 on every hourly, daily, weekly chart in Korea for the past 400 hours. In case you're wondering, that's the most by a girl group ever. The only artists in front of them are BTS (Dynamite) and IU (Celebrity). It is looking like the only group that can potentially block NJ from getting the all-time record is...NewJeans

• NewJeans is on track to debut on the Billboard Hot 100 next week. Yep. that's right. Ditto is that big. And they will be the first girl group of this generation to do it
• NewJeans is also the first girl group since 2016 to take the #1 spot on the Weekly Oricon chart in Japan. They've barely done any promos there outside of KCON and it hasn't mattered. Japan wants more.
• NewJeans is the first girl group of their generation to break through the UK Singles Chart. They are already the highest charting 4th gen song on the chart. They also started off 2023 on top of the QQ chart (the Chinese equivalent to Melon) with both Ditto and OMG

I usually spare this thread my chart nerd rants, but this goes back to what I said maybe a couple months ago? NewJeans is on a historic tear to start their careers, and they're not just big in Korea anymore. No girl group, not a single one, has had a start to their careers like this.

When Hype Boy finally exits the top 10, I'll start to gather some details on what the hell that monster song accomplished.

The remaining 5 made revisions in their contracts two or so years ago that the other 4 did not. The courts found the other 4 members had a similar contract to Chuu and thus decided they should get the same freedom to cancel out their contract with Blockberry.

What a fucking mess.

I miss Loona, but I am so happy I got to see them last year.

I'm still on that same note of how makes most other current groups pale, and questioning what the weight/legitimacy is with awards shows (although that's not really new).

Taeyang/Jimin collab.
Collab is cooler than the song imo. Both Bigbang and BTS were at the top of their generations, coming from then-smaller companies. The sense of originality with their earlier stuff especially is pretty unmatched.

What may be getting lost for me is again, direction/concept. They're just...doing this for the sake of putting the girls together. While I'm obviously not the intended audience for NJ, it's clear that they're centered around more relatable subjects of their target audience. They dwell into that better.

What she offers in a more mature tone and setting is more impressive. She was pretty much the best dancer in IZ*ONE.

Japanese wrestler girlfriend is a something that crossed my mind. Just thinking about how they use their time..."training"...everyday to make a living is....fascinating.

Sakura is an S-Tier idol. Gorgeous, extremely intelligent, kind and hilarious even when she's not trying to be, and she's also a hardcore gamer and anime fan (her dream is to sing an anime OST for her favorite anime)

eh, no real strong feeling about ive other than that starship gives them good songs. (tbh i almost included a naver now cam for my satisfaction on the playlist... but wonyoung's mugging to the camera kinda made the song worse so i just went with the track by itself lol)

Being a Twice hater aside, Tzuyu impressively has got the hang of English vocals over most of the other members. Pronunciation and clarity.

I know she's loosely able to speak it, but not fluently. That + her starting as not so strong of a vocalist, she's come a long way.

I think Hype Boy definitely fulfilled its position as a lead single. It's the brightest of all the tracks and has the "catchiest" choreography. Also helps they made so many video variants.

My favorite is probably Ditto. Usually holiday-timed releases have a more dedicated tone, and for them to pull it off as well as ridiculously well I feel put a stamp on the fact they're not just a group with a lucky/hot start. It's something of an indicator of "there's more where that came from".

They didn't shy away from going into topics at more depth, which for such a young group kinda makes older groups look a bit silly.

I actually was watching that a bit earlier today.
It's cool to see how they apply themselves to the recording process. The re-takes and corrections they're mindful of. Granted it's a normal thing in recording. Just fascinating to see a younger group in the process.

Hanni's raw vocals are impressive. I've heard it in a recent encore, but to hit the sharper lines, I thought her mic would be a little boosted to help with projection

Hanni has always impressed me, but Hyein has impressed me lately. Like I never would've guessed that almost haunting, melodic intro to Ditto was her or that she actually recorded that with her raw voice.

There have been a few times during some of the more vocally dominant parts of their songs where I was surprised it was Hyein and not Hanni.

She's getting a lot of good attention from that behind the scenes video.
