Like a mass shooting.

Would the scar of such an extreme tragedy be enough to make you be willing to drop everything and move somewhere else to get away from the memories?

If it involved my family, then perhaps. Otherwise it wouldnt convince me to move or limit my in-town activities.

I actually did. Moved to a smaller town. Didn't feel safe in the city anymore. Also it seemed like my condo had weekly break-ins.
And considering Canada's current healthcare strategy is to put you in a hallway so you don't die in the waiting room after 4 days of waiting, you don't want to risk being mugged or stabbed.

Pretty sure there was a murder just a hundred feet from my house, and they discovered the body in a dumpster in the apartment complex next to my housing track. I knew about it before I bought my house and still did so.

Not to mention 3 of the houses in my neighborhood had fires that pretty much destroyed them.

That's weird, I felt safer in a city that I do in the suburbs, sure, I could get mugged but less chance of being involved in a mass shooting and it's....super white out here.

The problem, as with most things, is that it's a question of context.

How do you define tragedy? One death? A dozen? Hundreds? Thousands? How directly are you tied to it (did you know anyone involved)? Was it a singular moment, or indicative of endemic problems (is it going to happen again)? How large is the town/city? How financially possible is it to completely upend your entire life and move to another town entirely?

People have been killed in my town (someone I personally knew was shot to death in his own home), but it never even crossed my mind to move because it was never anything that had a direct effect on me. There was a multiple shooting at a local grocery store I used to go to, and it didn't stop me from shopping there. I never stopped going to NYC after 9/11 (even when people were still worried there might be future attacks). Hurricane Sandy killed hundreds of people overall and literally pulled buildings apart near where I live (and some areas were totally condemned entirely), yet I never moved (hell, Hurricane Katrina killed thousands and flooded most of New Orleans, and tons of people stayed or went back to the city after).

If literally every loved one I've ever had were all in my house while I was out and all died from a gas leak I'd probably be pretty keen on leaving, but if the same gas leak happened down the road at the local elementary school and killed a ton of kids I probably wouldn't be too jarred because I don't know anyone who has kids there.

Not a mass shooting, no. It'd have to be something a lot bigger with a more lasting impact, and probably a personal connection.

I live in America. There are multiple places I drive by on a daily basis where somebody was murdered, often a person with whom I had some acquaintance. (And no, I didn't kill them, before somebody makes that awful joke.)

I kinda getcha, but not all tragedies are created equal @Lokarin

If you move from the US to Iceland or Australia for example, you're a lot less likely to get killed.

If you move from the US to Vietnam, you can be poor, and afford to go on an international vacation once a year

Doubt it.

I think the only thing that would make me move is if my town suddenly became a mecca for furries or something similar. That is very unlikely to happen.

lolwut? Seriously, lolwut? jfc... A lot of the US's murder rate is just DC, Puerto Rico, and La. Just stay out of those areas and you're fine. Meanwhile Australia is chockful of shit that can kill you.

The US's murder rate drivers tend to be limited to relatively small areas. If you're outside those areas, the odds aren't substantially worse on a pragmatic level than anywhere else

Yes, all the places with people.
