#28: Pixie
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/5/9/3/AAOJ0pAADa5R.jpg

Sir! How am I so low ranked? This is not fair! I should be ranked #1! Look at my bow!

That is most likely how dear, sweet Pixie would react to being #28 on my list. Well, Pixie how she is now, at least.

At the start of the campaign, Pixie was a dear, sweet, timid dog, adopted by Lush, as her master, Osgood, was missing. She would never make a peep, and at the first sign of trouble hide under her blankets and disappear for hours.

Enter Data 7. A strong dog. A handsome dog. A...large dog. A dog with a bit of a bad side. Everything that encourages a pure girl like Pixie to think thoughts she shouldn't. And if there is anything Data 7 loves to do, it is prodding animals and animal-adjacent characters into coming out of their shell.

Pixie was smitten, but she is a lady, and a lady wants to be wooed. Yet Data 7 is far from the wooing type. The closest he gets is playful, not flirty, and he encourages aggression, no matter how much one insists on not fighting.

So here was Pixie, stewing in her anger at not being wooed, her attempts to get her Sir's attention the way she wanted it failing, and being so utterly confused by gifts that were meant to make her tougher, but she saw as precious treasures.

So became aggressive she did. Pixie began barking. Pixie began biting people. And most of all, Pixie began plotting. Her Sir follows a rat in the gang Big Troubles? Enter the Passable Persuasions, with the purpose of being Bigger and Better than...than that RAT. All to handle her ever-growing anger at her perceived rejection. Hell hath no fury like a lady scorned, and Pixie is most certainly a scorned lady.

An scorned, spoiled lady, who, in a series of sessions last December, demanded gifts from each and every player, treasures to add to her collection, to prove her ability to heist, and just because she deserves to be treated like the princess she is. And gifts she did receive, from magic soda to rock CDs.

Pixie is a little terror, and part of the fun of it is that so many of us, by virtue of not being able to talk to animals, are completely unaware of perhaps the single biggest drama in the campaign. All we see is a cute dog, not a gang leader, a lady in love, an angry bitch, and a stealer of any scene she stumbles in on. I mean, look at her. Can you say no to this face?

#27 Jack Cross
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/6/5/2/AAOJ0pAADX-s.jpg
Oh, Jack Cross.

Before Hassan, before Bobo Bennetti and Thom Kallor, Jack Cross was the original 'person who provides debriefing what it needs'. We met Jack Cross in Mesa Verde when he put a gun to our heads, and it's been all uphill since then.

Jack Cross may be a member of Checkmate, but he isn't a true believer. He's a doubter. He asks the questions people don't think about, or are too afraid to voice. He questions Checkmate's purpose, if it even should exist, he questions how much we even know about what we're doing. He questions people on a personal level, and adores reading about Hamilton Drew, the greatest detective ever. The phrase 'He's Hamilton Drew!' is often used as the only description needed of the detective, and that's word for word from Jack Cross. He sometimes asks utterly ridiculous questions, just to lighten the mood.

...One of those questions was directed towards Roz'etta, asking how her people have sex. This is not to be offensive or crass, but because his love of reading has led to him writing science fiction novels and wants them to be somewhat based in reality. And the most logical source of reality to base science fiction on is the local alien. Besides, everyone else has surely wondered the same things he does.

Jack Cross is what was so sorely needed early on, someone to lighten the mood, someone to question the field agents, but without the sort of authority where we felt we couldn't talk back. Someone who could talk back to anybody in Checkmate, talk bad about the way the world was before the Society and A-Day, someone who is just going to sit there and stand up for his principles, and someone who is happy to share a laugh with anybody if they tell a good joke...or a ridiculous part of a mission.

Jack Cross is just someone you need in the room when decisions are made, because if he isn't he'll point out everything that is wrong long after you've committed to your plan and it's too late to fix things. He's Ian Malcolm in Jurassic Park (although no, his voice is not scar attempting a Jeff Goldblum impression, this is called an analogy), making sure that just because we can make some decisions, it doesn't mean we do. He tests our convictions, and calls us out, but he doesn't stew on things, let anger boil. What Jack Cross says in the moment is how he feels, and he isn't sorry about it.

And inside the great spy organization in the world, in the greatest political organization in the world, someone who will never hold back, whether it's anger or laughter, is extremely valuable. He improves morale of everybody when he opens his mouth, because well...

He's Jack Cross!

#26 Crazy Shy Lolita Canary
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/1/2/0/AAOJ0pAADbBg.jpg
Crazy Shy Lolita Canary, of Japan's Super Young Team, is engineered for one purpose in the hero community, marketing. She is a marketing dream, from her dainty size to her cute appearance, to her hunger and craving for money.

And of course, being so shy, and so crazy. Oh hu hu hu. She is so hungry for money that she's almost a villain, talking about her plots to take advantage of the poor and the weak.

Yet what truly puts her this high is her relationship with Spirit. Spirit is not necessarily the most outgoing type. He's a doctor, but he's very serious. He never really had a childhood, due to having been raised by his older brother, and life in Gotham and No Man's Land. This makes him being the one to most attach to Canary the funniest possible result. Here is a pure capitalist who talks about using the poor, and a kid who grew up broke and is the last sort of person to attach to someone so full of nonsense and so plotting as Canary. It's such a weird duo that it works.

Maybe because in a world with no economy, Canary's hunger for cash feels so harmless. So normal. Maybe it's because a certain other capitalism-loving hero, Booster Gold, left such a poor impression on Spirit, sending him a birthday wish where he got the name wrong, and blatantly demanded the money right in front of the boy, while Canary at least delivers the products she offers. Maybe it's just because Canary is designed to appeal to boys who grew up poor and lonely.

But my guess is because Canary is one of the only cases where Spirit has been able to make a young friend on his own merits. Most heroes near Spirit's age met or know of him through Bart Allen, the former Impulse turned Kid Flash turned...possibly corpse, possibly Speed Force, and bond a little with him through that connection. With Canary, it's all Spirit. There's no specter of Bart hanging over their friendship, and with that it is so much lighter than if he talks to Freddy or Stargirl. Spirit can just be an innocent kid, and any time Spirit can embrace that he is still very much a child just gives so much to the campaign. It's hard to picture where Spirit would be if he didn't have Canary to look after. Playing air hockey poorly some more?

It's good to see you being able to be a kid sometimes, Spiritu.

#25 Mica'kel M'orzz
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/1/2/5/AAQcMAAADgZV.png

Alright folks, strap in. It's time to talk about Martians.

The two most common Martian types in DC Comics are the Green Martians (J'onn J'onzz, i.e. the Martian Manhunter) and the White Martians, some of the most feared conquerors in the universe. Remember this tidbit in Oracle's write-up?

She and Roz'etta even played a key role in things outside of Gotham, helping take down the Hyperclan and show the world it still needed a Justice League, resulting in the reformation of the JLA.

The Hyperclan were an organization of White Martian conquerors who attempted to effectively enslave and slaughter the human race, now sealed away in the Phantom Zone. Well, enter campaign two, and enter Roz'etta, now older, wiser, and perhaps a bit angry at injustices around her committed by humanity. In a laboratory in Platinum Flats, Roz'etta found Martian bodies torn to shreds, experimented on, used as tools. And she also found a tracker to locate another, that pointed her to Monument Valley.

Inside, there were two groups. One, government agents with one goal, to keep their prisoners trapped. Those prisoners were Martians. One of them was killed at the hands of an agent, but the rest, Sy'rann, Till'all, Telok'telar, and Mica'kel, still lived. Da'len could have died, as an agent tried to burn him alive in a furnace, but his death was thwarted. Five members of the Hyperclan, who had been shown the benefits of mercy, of sympathy, of granting opportunity from J'onn J'onzz. Five Martians who had suffered at the hands of humanity.

But there was one more person in play, one more who could shift the tide against them.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/1/2/6/AAQcMAAADgZW.jpg

No, wait, that's not quite right.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/1/2/7/AAQcMAAADgZX.jpg
Ah, there she is, Condoleezza Rice. Condoleezza Rice made her attempt to appeal to Roz'etta, how she had looked after Roz'etta when they were both part of the US government, how she could be trusted, while White Martians could not, how she could gather Roz'etta an army made of the soldiers of Monument Valley. how both had suffered at the hands of the US government.

...Wait, both?

Yes, both. For Condi was not here as a government agent, as a watchdog, but as a prisoner herself.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/1/2/8/AAQcMAAADgZY.png
Condoleezza Rice is Cay'an, a Green Martian, with one goal, stop the White Martians from escaping.

Beyond the feud of the Green and the White Martians, which has spanned millennia, planets, and species (as the Saturnians have two types as well, one descended from the Green, and one from the White), Cay'an had a personal stake in this.

For you see, there was a child in the middle of this feud. What has gone ignored is Mica'kel's last name. M'orzz. There is a hero with that name, as well.

<img src="https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/9/4/7/AAQcMAAADeZj.png">
Miss Martian. Megan Morse. M'gann M'orzz. The daughter of Mica'kel M'orzz and Condoleezza Rice.

And so the stage was set. Cay'an made her move, put her cards on the table, and made her offer of assistance. All she needed was for us to help her in killing these 5 White Martians, and all her knowledge, all her power, all her influence, was ours.

Or we could kill her, and put our faith in 5 White Martians, beings that all reason says cannot be trusted.

The decision fell on Roz'etta, to side with her people, or take a risk and put her faith in members of the Hyperclan. If M'gann is freed from Darkseid's influence, will she have a Green or White Martian parent?

She chose the Hyperclan, and it might be the biggest decision she's made all campaign. Then it fell to Mica'kel to make a decision of his own. Of how to handle this unexpected mercy, from a being he was taught from birth to believe were inferior. This opportunity to possibly reconnect with his daughter.

Mica'kel is in an awkward spot, a Martian who is confused and angered by what seems like weakness in the humans that now surround him. His frustration is clear in every conversation he's in, every biting remark at how humanity is given so much, while his people were given so little in life. It's such a weird perspective to look from, given the sheer power White Martians have at their disposal compared to an average human, but he isn't truly wrong. And he knows the opportunity granted to him was not an easy decision. He knows his own limits, and that the mercy he saw as weakness was the same strength that gave him a chance at life. He respects Roz'etta, even when they disagree on humanity, and how to handle being surrounded by tens of thousands of them.

He is also a conqueror at heart, and sees a bit of conqueror in Roz'etta as well. He is vengeful, and angry, and powerful. And he knows who to talk to, should the opportunity arise to connect with the rest of the Hyperclan, to bring them onto our side.

More than anything though, Mica'kel is a survivor. He survived the curses that befell Mars, he survived torture at the hands of humans, and with the help of one Red Saturnian, he survived the mother of his child.

Mica'kel wages war throughout the stars for the purpose of surviving. There is perhaps no enemy worse to oppose than one fighting for that reason.

I love the story of Mica'kel and the White Martians, how one seemingly side decision, a story that only came up during campaign one due to diving further and further into DC lore, has had such a profound impact on this campaign. Oh, and the White Martians are currently disguised as Green Martians for the sake of keeping trust, and at this moment only Fastbreak, the team that rescued them, Amanda Waller, and The Thinker know. So that's hanging over everything they do, everywhere they are.

I only hope Tronix and the main forces of the Hyperclan gives Roz'etta a chance to say her peace before trying to rip her head off.

Hint for #24: This character wears mostly black.

The Hyperclan session was stressful

My character, Lush, was originally assisting the human members as they entered, as we were attacked by Martians as we entered and went through the facility. But as they went they learned something. The mercy that was given by Martian Manhunter, was described more as... mindwiping. Programming. And man does my character have a ton of reasons to have feelings about this. Once she knew that, she was a brother in arms to these Martians who had suffered a fate similar to her own. And it has painted Rosetta's hero, J'onn J'onnz in a different light, making him potentially just as villanous as Zatanna herself.

See Scare, that's another reason why the Hyperclan is compelling.

J'onn's motives for what did he are so completely different from Zatanna's, and how he handled it. He didn't turn people he affected into farces of beings, unable to function, he gave them a chance at being able to function.

It's a very 'is the action itself wrong, or how it is used' situation.

#24: The Shade (Richard Swift)
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/3/3/5/AAQcMAAADgcn.jpg
Ah, Richard Swift. The Shade, master of shadows, former supervillain, turned to the less dark side, one of the many odd allies Jack Knight made over the years.

He originally showed up in the first campaign, and long story short, we had to recover his body, which was under the control of Simon Culp, the worst villain I've ever met. With the help of Katana's katana, his body was restored to his own control and Culp was sealed away, and thus Richard bid us a polite farewell, and was on his way to return Katana's katana to her, and be rid of Culp once and for all.

Fast forward to Opal City campaign two, where the city of the Knight family is surrounded by a dome of shadows. How could this have happened? To say that I was worried for a while was an understatement. Were we going to have to fight Richard? He seemed like the most obvious person to have done this. So it came time to trying to find weaknesses for one of the characters I was really hoping to just befriend this campaign. Roz'etta had spoken to Richard briefly in campaign one, and in it discovered that The Shade was very bad at drawing noses, when his spirit, trapped in a bowl, attempted to draw what he believed we looked like. This turned out to be a long-term issue for him, as back in his supervillain days, the Thinker revealed that The Shade's shadow creatures also had bad noses. Could this be a hint as to The Shade's fate? I don't think it turned out that way, but it was nice to see a little tidbit from campaign one come into play here.

Enter Opal City, a world controlled by shadows, where we slowly lose our minds, at risk of becoming shadows ourselves, with a great wall of shade between us and Richard. Alliances were made and bodies were broken on our way to get to Richard himself, where we found him, split in two, and inside him...we found him.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/3/3/6/AAQcMAAADgco.jpg
The worst villain I've ever met. We were promised Culp was gone. We were assured of it.

We were lied to, and it made for one of the greatest surprises in either campaign. Finally, after all this time, the final climactic battle with Simon Culp, and we emerged victorious.

And now, finally, we have the chance to truly get to know The Shade...once enough time passed that he was able to truly pull himself back together, spending a while as more of a goop who kinda responded to our attempts to communicate with him. The Shade is a gentleman. He greatly respects the mind of an intelligent woman. He's a charmer, and he was dear friends with Alfred Nobel, as the Ludlows sought to use Nobel's knowledge to blow up The Shade in their eternal feud.

Oh, right, I haven't gotten to the Ludlows. Specifically, the Ludlow-Dalts, who have devoted decades to one goal, killing The Shade. Except, of course, for one Ludlow. That one is I, Spyder, who holds no ill will towards The Shade. The feeling is not mutual, and when in the presence of I, Spyder, a bit of the villainous side of Richard Swift rears its ugly head, an anger borne from decades that is hard to contain. It is especially entertaining since I, Spyder himself is blind, living in the darkness as much, if not moreso, than the master of shadows himself.

The Shade is a man very much divided. He is looking over his shoulder for when the next Ludlow is after him, but he's also in a way finally truly living his own life, his darkest side defeated. This allows him to truly shine through, a man with a woman he cares about in Hope O'Dare, a gentleman who surrounds himself with intelligent women he can share a respectful conversation with, someone who has an odd chemistry with Christopher Chance, and someone who is, at this moment, being sought out by Jack Knight, who surely has all kinds of words for Richard, except apparently The Shade never let anyone call him Richard before, a rare case of someone managing to get under the jovial Starman's collar without having to say a word.

And by transporting people through the shadows, he's managed to save our lives more than once.

...Man, I just love Richard. I need to see how that conversation with him and Jack went. And just see him more often in general.

I feel like this is Nightshade-adjacent, but I can't put my finger on who it's supposed to be. So I'll go with Squeak.

#23: Uptup!
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/5/0/8/AAOJ0pAADbXM.png
From Las Vegas, this girl is pure chaos. She doesn't speak a language, which makes her the perfect person to put with Roz'etta, who can speak any language, thus leaving her helpless when confronted by the nonsense words of Noooo.... Roz'etta is also a mother who brought her daughter Susie to Vegas, but after one evening her daughter was replaced with this chaotic creature uttering Jajaja. She is nonsense and I adore her. I adore her enough to try to get her back to her mother, instead of just abandoning her to the streets of Society-run Vegas. This only led to more problems as A) figuring out anything about Uptup! from herself was impossible, and B) Roz'etta's daughte Susie's plan was for Uptup! to be killed and left in a ditch somewhere once her purpose was done.

And so we investigated what happened to us during a drunken night in Vegas, as Uptup! would lick everyone, happily grab anything she could get her hands on to show everyone, and remain incomprehensible. Eventually we were able to return her to her mother, but that only led to more chaos as her mother turned out to be Miracle Molly of the Unsanity Collective, the daughter of Mister Miracle and possessor of her father's Mother Box. On top of that, being rid of Uptup! did not make us done with her for good, as she wormed her way into our plan to perform a heist and steal what turned out to be the Helm of Fate from the Furies.

This has all left unsaid her true purpose...which is to allow scarlet to relentlessly and brutally troll me personally. For weeks I was punished with Susie at a phonebooth, calling and begging to be picked up. Weeks of it, I tell you. Then when the time finally came where Roz'etta was able to pick up Susie, her refusal to kill Uptup! resulted in Susie going 'Put me down!' in what was one of the most painful moments to hear. I was so fucking sad, man.

And Uptup! had one last troll up her sleeve.

...She could speak English perfectly fine the entire time. What?

Oh, right, and her name is Squeak, not Uptup!

...I love her so much. She's just so endearing. An absolutely perfectly delivered trollish character, and one I cannot wait to get more of. I wish I had more words to say about her, but the utter sorrow scarlet drew out of me with using her to troll me was just...so good. I'm not sure how else to say it.

I'll just leave you with the knowledge that I will never be able to hear the words 'pick me up', 'put me down', or 'ball' again. You have successfully traumatized me in regards to this campaign, scarlet. Good job.

Tbf I couldn't remember which character that was. But Susie really stood out to me in Han's ranking and wanting to kill another kid for stealing her adopted mom's attention was memorable.

#22: Parademon (K'Ray)
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/0/0/4/AAOJ0pAADaQ0.png
It started on a simple mission to Toronto with Catman, wherein we met many Canadian heroes and got them out of the city before Darkseid's forces, Equated and Parademons, took them out. Parademons being armies of enormous flying creatures who will tear everything they get their hands on limb from limb. When it's time for Darkseid to wipe a city off the face of the Earth, a dropship will pop in, and the Parademons will flow out.

It ended with us damaging the antenna of a Parademon and hitting it as hard as we could in the back of the head. This, shockingly, led to a Parademon breaking free from Darkseid's control. This sweetheart (sorta), K'Ray, and newest member of the Secret Six.

With that bit of understanding done, it's time to talk about exactly what makes K'Ray such a great character. While he's free from Darkseid's control, he still has bits of that influence, often saying he is doing some sort of action for Granny Goodness, seeking out pain and violence because Parademons were taught pain is good and gentle is bad. Yet despite that, he has such a jovial tone about him as he talks about bathing in the blood of his enemies. He happily calls New Gods small because, well, he's enormous so they are small compared to him.

Also important is that despite his head injuries that resulted in him being a Parademon not under Darkseid's control with memory issues, he isn't dumb. He aspires to have a heroic name and costume like Earth's heroes, but dislikes capes because they get in the way of his wings. He doesn't settle on a good name despite Roz'etta's suggestions because he has no filter, but it's the effort that counts. He's more than capable of teaching people how to improve at flying, telling people of the importance of back muscles like any other physical trainer would.

His lack of filter and lack of being gentle also leads to his friendliness come through in physical comedy, like hugs that are far too tight, and headpats that are meant for people his size. He's often paired with Ragdoll, who he happily calls a clown, and Ragdoll calls K'Ray an oaf, which itself makes more hilarious characters a little more hilarious. And yet it also extends how oddly nice both can be, if you get them on the same page in a conversation.

But for all the comedy behind K'Ray, there's also tragedy. You see, K'Ray was the source Roz'etta got for the first bit of information on Superman, that he was being targeted for capture, to be a consort for one of the New Gods. When she brought this information to Waller, it served on confirmation of what she had other knowledge of, that Superman was leading some of Darkseid's forces, with red eyes. Superman was equated.

Additionally, K'Ray is proof of what Parademons could be if it weren't for Darkseid. They aren't evil, they're just manipulated forces, they could be good friends if it weren't for that one thing. And yet we've recently learned there's even more to it. Parademons aren't just manipulated forces, they're people from other Earths, other worlds, converted into Parademons in much the same manner as Darkseid's creating Furies. K'Ray has friends, friends within the Parademons, perhaps even friends from before he was a Parademon. He remembers them, he misses them. Every world Darkseid goes to leads to him creating more Parademons, more armies. More people turned into monsters.

I suppose it's possible that our Earth isn't even Darkseid's main target and we're just another planet to convert life into Parademons. There is so much depth behind one, singular Parademon. One of billions. One who can shift from joyous joking to serious teacher to sad mourner, all in the same sentence.

K'Ray is a classic trope, the gentle giant (gentle relative to his fellow Parademons, at least), just so well-done.

Hint for #21: This character thinks a lot more than they speak.
