First off, NO SPOILERS FOR ACTUAL COMICS EVENTS for these characters.

In the same spirit as Han's list, I am also going to do my top 52, so those who have followed that, enjoy another list!

How will my list be similar? How will it be different? Only time will tell!

Hint for #52: This character has solved some of the greatest mysteries in the world.

#52: Vicki Vale

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/5/1/8/AAQcMAAADc1G.png

In this campaign, Vicki Vale serves as the head editor of the Gazette, giving us stories about small goings-on in the world and around our base. I am a sucker for these tiny details, this is the sort of stuff that I can sink my teeth into and adore, and Vicki isn't quiet to get into how some minor villain played a major role in someone's life.

On top of that, her campaign debut was excellent. She was hyped up as, believe it or not, a major supervillain, the #2 woman in running a school for the purpose of turning children to the Anti-Life Equation, becoming loyal soldiers of Darkseid. When we found her, she had red eyes, and revealed that she had been disguising herself as an Equated using contacts, simply trying to find a way to survive. And yet the big reveal from this was not that Vicki Vale, traitor to humanity, was actually acting.

The big reveal is that Vicki Vale solved one of the biggest mysteries in the world, that Bruce Wayne is Batman. One of the great secrets of the world, and Vicki knows it, but she had nobody to tell, at least not anybody whom she would benefit at all from telling.

Upon returning with us, she been put in a position where she has the greatest story to ever tell, but is trapped by the burden of knowledge. Knowledge that outing Batman's identity does nothing for her, she won't get accolades or adoration as she would have when the world still functioned. So she sits in her office, writing stories, telling the world the tales that need to be told, and stewing in knowing what she does, but not having any Bruce Wayne to ask the questions that stewing on this knowledge brings up. Vicki is always full of surprises, and it's anybody's guess what she'll end up doing with Batman's identity. I can't wait.

Vicki Vale articles are honestly my favorite thing people can ask for between sessions. They do a lot to help me work out small details in the campaign, and explore topics no one will ever necessarily ask about, yet need to hear. And I really love Vicki's change from Campaign 1 and 2.

#51 Hector the Lion
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/5/2/7/AAQcMAAADc1P.png

Roar yes! I am ranked!

Hector is the beloved lion of Catman. He is charming, absolutely adorable, unbelievably kind, and probably one of the most generally precious characters out there. Everyone can benefit from talking to Hector.

Or he was, at least, until he was brutally murdered by Deathstroke before the campaign. Except he wasn't murdered by Deathstroke. He was murdered by Deadshot, one of Catman's closest allies months later.

So how is Hector here? Well, have you ever heard of a little known film called The Lion King? On a mission to Lamumba, Hector appeared before party, and the one who missed him the most. Hector is not just a lion, he is the very spirit of the lion, trapped in the crystal of Leo. He seeks to make Catman, his friend for so long, his champion, and yet Catman is consumed by rage, by sorrow, by his need for revenge, and to make matters worse, the one who claimed the power of the lion was Barbara Ann Minerva, the former Cheetah, now Lioness.

And what of Deadshot, the man who murdered Hector, who betrayed Hector's best friend, who faked everything to hide his crimes? Hector is a docile king, a kind king, a loving king, and despite his good nature, a wise king. And so he did the kindest, most loving, wisest, and cruelest thing he could do to Deadshot.

He forgave him. A man with a death wish finally got caught in a lie that surely would end his life, and it ended in his victim forgiving him, like Franz Ferdinand forgiving the Bosnians. Because Hector knows nothing good will come out of revenge, and he just wants his friend to live happily.

May we all be like Hector! Roar yes, be like me!

#50: Mento (Steve Dayton)
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/0/4/5/AAQcMAAADc9V.png

When I started making this list, I never thought I would put Mento here, but the more I thought about him, the more I adore him.

The Doom Patrol is full of broken people. They aren't in the Doom Patrol because they have problems, because if they merely had problems, they would have been in the Doom Patrol and left. The Doom Patrol is the Doom Patrol because they can't be fixed.

Mento's problem is that he is the biggest asshole in the world.

Living in the very top floor of our base Z'onn Z'orr is this son of a bitch. Mento's helmet unlocks the full potential of the mind, and with it on Mento provides a mental shield that hides the presence of our entire resistance. Without him, we will die. And Mento knows it, he knows he is possibly the single most valuable person in Z'onn Z'orr, and with that knowledge comes an ego just as big. No secret is safe from Mento, and he'll be sure to tell yours if given the chance, whether it's your shameful past as a formerly married woman, or your true species that would cause a terror if that identity was known.

And if you try to get on his good side and get him to do favors for you, you might end up even worse than that. Bloodfruit (JB's fairy) asked Mento to provide a prisoner, Fright, some relief from living in constant terror. Mento did just that. Now Fright is incapable of feeling anything. Mento patted himself on the back for being such a good guy. What an asshole.

On the flip side of Mento is Steve Dayton. Without his helmet, Mento becomes just Steve Dayton, the most pathetic man in the world. He just wants to lay down on the floor and mourn how useless he is without the helmet, and on top of that he doesn't particularly want the helmet, for he's seen firsthand the harm people who wear it bring to those around him.

If Steve Dayton had a fraction of the power Mento does, he could be a great hero. If Mento had a fraction of the humanity and humility Steve Dayton does, he could be the greatest hero. Instead they're miles and miles apart from one another.

But what truly places Mento on this list is his relationship with his guard, Tommy Jagger. Someone needs to guard Mento, to keep watch on him, and that responsibility fell onto Jagger. When our base was attacked, Jagger was taken down physically, and even Mento fell prey to the plot from an assault of fear on his mind. In the aftermath, Mento asked for Jagger to leave him be, for Jagger needed to recover his wounds. Was this just frustration at his guard having failed so spectacularly in his duties, or did Jagger break through so Mento ever so slightly has concern for someone? I don't know, and Mento, being Mento, is hard to approach on the subject even if you can manage to put up with him.

Hint For #49: This character is not American.

Mento is one of those campaign-patented characters who essentially lives in their occupation, a facility-based convention that does well to differentiate characters in tone from one another immediately through the setting. Mento kind of has one of the better, more off-putting scenes in the entirety of ZZ, I would say, and I think that does him well. For me, Mento is a tragicomic figure, a masterclass in the absurd.

I'll go with Valda.

#49: Squire (Beryl Hutchinson)
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/8/0/0/AAOJ0pAADXxY.jpg

One of the cores of many great Batman moments is that Batman needs the Batfamily. And the first piece of a Batfamily is a Robin. Without a Robin, Batman becomes a mess lost in his own angst.

Squire is the Robin to The Knight, the Batman of jolly old England. Except due to it falling under the fascist regime of Adam Susan, with the fascist regime of Darkseid being at the edge of the sea, it isn't so jolly. And a not so jolly old England makes The Knight even more sour and dour than usual, especially when that Knight is portrayed as the Will Arnett version of Batman from the Lego movies, but unironically.

But there must be light somewhere, and it is all in this precious bundle of joy. If Robin is meant to bring light into the world of Batman, Squire brings light into all of England, riding her Squirecycle, throwing Squirerangs, all while happily alerting allies and enemies of what Squirething she is doing at that moment.

She steals the show whenever she appears, and her bounciness only makes The Knight's negativity more unnerving. How can he be so miserable when he has Squire as his sidekick? It simply doesn't make sense, look at Squire! She's adorable! Batman needs a Robin, and Squire is exactly what The Knight needs.

Now we just need to figure out a way to help London that doesn't kill her mood...

Hint for #48: This character is extremely old.

Tomorrow is session 79B.

Since there are 10 players, we have two sessions a week. There are occasionally bonus sessions on off-weeks or whatever, but it's roughly session 158.

We started in October of 2020 for this campaign. The previous campaign took about a year and a half.

Scar made a list of every DC comics character and then placed them all around the universe. While they're all his own interpretations, and some are basically completely his creations, the design and names of characters and such are all pre-existing. But yes, Scar is phenomenal at making most every NPC feel unique, to the point where it was hard to decide on a top 52.

And coordination is a lot. I'm super controlling about getting everybody to update schedule every week, and we have a document with the possible places we can go that is like 80+ at this point and people mark preferences and it really is quite absolutely insane what we're doing.

#48: Rex the Wonder Dog
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/8/2/1/AAOJ0pAADYwN.png
Rex is a good boy. A very good boy. A very old good boy. Dogs living past a decade and a half is a sign of a good, long life.

Rex was in World War II. It is 2008. He is a very, very, very old good boy, thanks to the Fountain of Youth.

Rex's long life ties into everything he does. He's a legitimate doctor on his own, he's a world-traveled hero. He knows he'll outlive those around him, leading him to accept adopting a sparkplug pup. He steals lines from Captain America, because he can.

He's also just a dog who wants his boy. And with the Fountain of Youth poisoned, his boy, Danny, de-aged to the point of being a mere floating egg.

So Rex attached himself to Spirit, serving as a bit of a mentor in the non-medical ways of being a doctor, kind bedside manner.

But the Fountain of Youth being poisoned, along with a bullet wound, has recently begun taking its toll on Rex, and he is starting to feel every one of those extra days. He's slow, he's in pain. He's too tired to be a doctor anymore.

Rex is dealing with the very real possibility that he could die, and that's difficult for other characters to accept. Deaths in this campaign are usually quick and shocking, but if Rex passes, it's going to be slow and agonizing.

Rex is such a good boy. I hope we succeed at helping him.

Hint for 47: This character has a permanent injury.

#47: Scar
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/3/5/4/AAQcMAAADdRy.jpg
At the beginning of the campaign, we discovered Earth was trapped in a dome placed by the Alpha Lanterns, trapping the entire planet, and its populace, inside with Darkseid and his forces, as well as causing massive climate changes. One of our first, and most difficult, goals sounded simple, find a way to make contact to those beyond the dome. In the end it proved much more difficult than that, but eventually we made it out, and reached Oa, home of the beings called the Guardians of the Universe.

The Guardians of the Universe are the creators of the Green and Alpha Lanterns. The Green Lanterns, being extremely willful, are capable of being very stubborn. The Guardians of the Universe are significantly more stubborn than Green Lanterns, and as such, our pleas for the dome to be taken down fell on deaf ears, except for the ears of one Guardian, the aptly named Scar.

Scar is aptly named, as she has a scar on her face that does not heal. It does not heal specifically because she wants to keep it as a reminder of getting it. The Guardians of the Universe are not meant to feel emotions, so they can make their decisions as unbiased as possible. However, after Parallax, and with the rise of the Sinestro Corps and Darkseid's aggression, the Guardians have begun to feel the slightest bit of...fear. One Guardian, Ganthet, left the Guardians, in search of another emotion.

While other Guardians try to put down their fledgling emotions, Scar seems to be carefully exploring them, serving as our one true ally within the Guardians. She's a timeless being, but in this she's very much a rookie, albeit one with an eternity of wisdom behind her.

The Guardians in general are frustrating, but what makes Scar frustrating is that she's on our side, something she is sure to remind us even as she listens in on our conversations at the times that give off the worst impressions, and that carries an extra bit of a threat knowing that she is among the universe's most important beings. The Guardians are frustrating because they're stubborn in sticking to their ways, Scar is the opposite. She's open, she's curious, she's changing. But she's still a Guardian, always watching, always listening, and perhaps a little on edge about what these travelers from Sol's intentions are towards her and her kind.

Hint for #46: This character was part of the US government.
