Metroid is a great example
Metroid is actually a point I almost disagree with myself on actually lol. Metroid peaked with 2D sidescrolling action; the demo of Dread was great but the 3D entries of Metroid aren't shit compared to the 2D formula (which they probably felt compelled to invest in, given the times). Mega Man's another I can see; though I'm personally not a fan of any MM, we all know literally noone liked Mighty Number 9.

What I am saying is Zelda 1 isn't one of those games. It is still enjoyable by today's standards even if there are "better" games out there.
As someone who grew up with GBC Zelda games, both 1 and 2 feel unplayable for me. 1 feels strictly inferior to the GBC games (and the original Link's Awakening), and 2 is wat (actraiser without any gimmicks??).

I like the 2D games better then the Prime series as well, but actually going back and playing NES Metroid in a universe where Zero Mission exists? Come on...

I agree that Link's Awakening is probably my favorite Zelda game ever, and Link to the Past is arguably the best Zelda game ever, but Zelda 1 still holds up. Sometimes I don't want to play a longer game like those 2. I just want something simple yet rewarding. Zelda 1 is that.

And honestly, Zelda 2 is probably a different type of game altogether, albeit still highly influential.

Ya, Zelda 1 and 2 are still excellent...

but I can agree Metroid 1 is, well, frankly garbo and would probably be only a 3/10 these days

I'm not sure I'd consider anything the greatest of all time if it didn't still play well.

^

Thus my answer is none. Some of the games listed in this topic hold up fine for me though. Ocarina of Time and Final Fantasy VII are both still great. G1 of Pokemon was never in the running for me but i can absolutely still enjoy them though i always played them via Stadium anyways which had a fast forward feature.

5th gen of gaming is probably my cut off though for holding up. Doubt ill ever touch any game prior to it again.

ya, if Link had diagonal movement then the enemies likely would have to, too; which would make the game almost impossibly difficult.

Going off on a tangent... Blue Wizzrobes could move diagonally, as could Peahats, and they were invincible when they did so usually. Some bosses also moved diagonally, like Digdogger.

My main issue with LoZ is that I find its level design to be extremely dull, and I thought so even at the time. The game starts to get boring to me right around the time it starts to actually pose a bit of a challenge, which is a shame. The final dungeon is just a massive bore-fest. Oh, well.

I think the Satellaview 3rd quest made some very nice improvements to LoZ (but it's also too easy, if I recall correctly, and could use some rebalancing).

I legitimately do not understand how people today could think Chrono Trigger is the best game of all time except nostalgia, and I've seen that opinion pretty often here.
I more or less agree. It's not a bad game, certainly, but it's basically a simple right-down-the-middle classic RPG. I love DQ, classic FF, and JRPGs in general and keep trying to love (not just like) Chrono Trigger, but it just doesn't hit enough storyline or gameplay highs to bring it to any kind of next level for me. I put it about halfway between Secret of Mana (a loveable and rather cute classic RPG) and FF6, which I decidedly prefer.

Even at the time, Chrono Trigger could've benefitted from having a more actiony combat system. Don't ask me how they could've done it any other way than Tales of did back in the SNES days, but I remember the moment I played it and got into my first battle anticipating something different. Something like Secret of Mana. I wanted to use Crono like that.

No complaints really though. I enjoyed it at the time.

I should have included my disclaimer: I played FF6 when it came out and didn't play CT until years later, so take me with that grain of salt. Still, I go back in time to play at least PS1 era games with some regularity and don't have too much trouble enjoying those.

NES Zelda is one of the few perfect games. There is nothing that has to be done to it - it still plays perfectly today.

I just beat Lavos in Chrono Trigger today - and that is still the greatest RPG ever made. It's awesome. I don't understand people who dislike the game.

It's generally not so much a matter of disliking it as not seeing the hype. Most would agree it's a great game, it's just nothing particularly special by modern standards (in part because it established a lot of those standards).

If I WERE to tweak Zelda 1, there doesn't need to be TWO pause buttons so I'd either alter the select button functionality or increase the load/unload speed of the main menu...

...

And that's legit it.

I'm not sure most would agree it's a great game anymore, but it's possible it's partly due to a version of the Seinfeld is Unfunny trope... although, honestly, even at the time I thought it controlled and played poorly.

It is still undeniably the greatest RPG ever made. It puts modern games to shame IMO.

These are both excellent examples. The first generation Pokemon games were diamonds in the rough - they created an excellent formula for the games that followed, but their actual execution was not great (psychic being horrendously overpowered, half the types only having a few moves to their name, etc.). And while ES fanboys love to sing Morrowind's praises, it's very much a product of its time and there's a reason why Oblivion and Skyrim did away with a lot of its more obtuse elements.

I can't get back into morrowind mainly cause of the landing a hit being tied to a stat. Ok my stat for that weapon is low. Make my damage really weak not "miss" even though I see my weapon go through their head.

Only thing amusing about it was that one wood elf that was basically the toughest opponent in the game due to his absurd luck Stat.

Anyways:

Megaman 2 and 3 - at the time, like, pre-2000 ish (maybe pre-2010, not sure) I would flip-flop between which one is the best megaman, usually favouring 2.

But as I got older... they both have pretty serious flaws I'm less tolerant of in my old age, and I weirdly think Megaman 4 is the best one overall

Megaman 1 2 and 3 was the first trilogy I beat before Castlevania. Thanks to 2 being 2. I can't say I enjoyed them though. That didn't happen until Megaman X. There was a game released for PS1 that was just badass. That's the one I liked the most.

Speaking of which castlevania sotn. Still a great game as I played it first and loved it over two decades after its release but there definitely is some aspects that keep me from calling it the GOAT

I mean, I quite enjoyed playing through it for the first time in the DS remake in 2010-11ish, so I'd say it's still good. It's mechanically solid, it's got a good story, the art style holds up even compared to modern pixel art, excellent soundtrack... You're probably right that most wouldn't necessarily agree that it's a great game, since most gamers these days don't really care for JRPG's, but it definitely holds up among modern JRPG's aside from the lack of fancy FMV's (which are arguably unnecessary), even if it's no longer anything overly remarkable.
