Well, I came into today fully expecting the whole shebang so I did my prelistening at work. Guess suite photoconductivity gets a fresh listen tomorrow.

Match 1: "Too long" meme versus, apparently, a game full of nothing but amino acid bangers. Unfortunately said banger actively gave me a headache, and despite my vocal disapproval for its length, echochrome has some moments of brilliance intersparsed throughout the otherwise "on hold with a credit card company" motif, except the song is somehow shorter.
Match 2: Hello faux-Emi-Evans-in-NieR. I appreciate you more than your "starts as Metroid Prime boss fight and then swerved into an onramp." Which isn't bad, mind, but it's not beating out Nieralike for my taste.

Listening the entirety of Prime earlier today, only for it's opponent being a impeccable banger, was a whole sugar rush. Now now, while pointing this about Protease, #4507 chose well by using strings and managed to catch my attention for the major part of the listen-through. I feel if the sections were nominated, I would have an even harder time around here. But don't get me wrong - if Protease wins, I can see it winning match after match. This was a really special encounter.
Likewise, Misty Era is pretty great, and so is Supra. I'm leaning more for the nice stuff on Amplitude though, I specially like the ending bit. Pretty insane only one of these four will make round 3.
Long rant, haha. I am very excited for tomorrow's duels as well.

Crazy how 8.82 is 24th place....o_O (as I've said before, Bracket D may be my favorite bracket ever) Great first match. I like PROTEASE more than Deoxyribose, honestly (but not as much as Isoleucine). I love Kudo, esp. when he's taken more of a leadership role. I'm actually liking prime #4507 more today, which is probably bad because it's probably one more loss on my record! Personally I think it sounds way better than Professor Layton violin music ;). I could flip, but when I listen again tomorrow I'd have to prefer PROTEASE decisively in order to switch.

Here it is, my top 50, with prime #4507 rounding out the ranks! I don't know what I expected going into prime, but I think it's pretty great. Some parts are stronger than others, certainly, but those strong parts are very strong.

This top 50 would surely look a little different if I redid it today, but this should give you a general idea of my favorites in this year's contest. It's been an exciting field!

Protease is great, one of my favorites in the contest. Second favorite 13S song. prime sucks. Feels like a bad classical music piece.

Oh hey two of my noms in one day. Love the Nier influences for Misty Er'a <3. Supraspatial has a bad start, but gets better as it goes, and has some pretty good sections.

-[PROTEASE]- is pretty good. Pretty nice synths, as per usual for 13 Sentinels. This is definitely weaker than -(PHENYLALANINE)- though, mostly because it relies more on vocals than synths. The vocals are fine, but I listen to 13S music for the synths more than anything. I like the drop e-guitar drop at 5:20, probably the best part of the song. Good song overall.

prime #4507 is one of two songs that I didn't listen to during nominations (the other being Suite Photoconductivity), so this'll be fun. This will be more live commentary than a review, so don't expect this to sound super cohesive. A couple of minutes into it, and it has some lovely violin and piano. The violin around 5:30 is great. I do like how this song progresses as if telling the story of life, making it feel very cohesive. The section after the 19 minute mark is pretty good feeling very playful. The pizzicato after 21:00 is great, as is the downward glissando in the piano around the 22 minute mark. Nice harmonization in the violins and viola after 27:30. The section after 41:45 is really good. Love the rhythms and chords. The violin is very good here too. Nice pizzicato at 43:40 as well. Really nice vibrato from the second violin and viola at 49:00. The section around 52:30 is another highlight. Really like the ornamentation on the violins. I appreciate that the viola gets solos from time to time as well, like the one at around 57:00. Section at around 1:02:00 is another highlight for me. Love the bouncy feel of the piano and cello backing, with a very solid melody on top. Ooh, good piano arpeggios after 1:10:00. The last ten minutes or so do have a strong sense of finality to them, which is appropriate. That's some high violin notes at around 1:13:20, they add a nice texture. Great song overall, very well-crafted, and an impressive string quartet and piano performance.

Misty Er'A does sound like a NieR piece. I like the strings, synths, vocals, and percussion in this. Some of the higher pitched vocals in the later parts aren't my favorite, but they're not awful. Good song overall.

Supraspatial is pretty interesting. Some really interesting synths and vocals here. Pretty cool song overall. Very close match for me.

I liked all four songs today, which is a good thing.

I think 13Sen's OST may not be for me, which is a shame as I'm looking forward to playing the game. I kind of get into this when the backing drops out for the vocals at 1:47 but that part doesn't really go anywhere and then we're back to the main course. The electric guitar at 5:20 is decent too. No idea why this doesn't resonate with me more on the whole as I like the instruments and there's nothing particularly bad here, but it doesn't spark much in me.
prime does not need to be this long. It's been a couple weeks since I listened through it all but I remember it having some very nice sequences in there.

Counter to PROTEASE, Misty always grabs me much more than I expect it to. I think it's the second singer with the deeper voice coming in that does it, she's really powerful. The brief spoken word bit is bad and the kid vocals threaten to be annoying, but the song keeps just on the right side of cheese and you know what, it works! Well done, Misty.
Supra ain't for me I'm afraid. I don't care for the vocals, the wubbing, or the overall journey of the song. The beat is fine. Again it's not bad, just not to my tastes. I could see it growing on me on repeated listens, but that won't do for today.

I think that there was no chance that I'd end up voting a primarily piano song over a more electronic based one (and from a game that has produced past winners), but I did my fair part and listened to them so I could make that judgement myself. There is nothing actually wrong with prime, it's just not my type of song. People that are fans of that style would probably vote for it regardless of length. I liked how every 5-10 minutes it seemed to change style, but there's no specific part that I really have anything to say about.

On the flip side, Amplitude is my 2nd favorite video game soundtrack, so I came into this match hoping that DJMAX wouldn't give me something that I liked to complicate my decision. Luckily, it delivered, or failed to deliver depending on how you put it. Easy vote in that match.
