CPS Energy (San Antonio) did well today, at least for me. We'll see how tomorrow goes.

For one, because PG&E has 100 year old power lines. They'll shut power off whenever it is hot and windy because their equipment can fail and cause another large fire like the one that burned down Paradise.

Many questions like this can be answered with the phrase short-sighted greed.

At least in CA you won't get a $10,000 energy bill because the power company decided on a random Tuesday that they wanted to charge that much.

Attention, everyone! Its going to be the hottest part of the day, so then your AC off and suffer through the heat! This never made sense to me. If they cannot produce enough energy for everyone, thats their problem. Renovate the system to accommodate for the fact that literally every city is overpopulated. Dont expect people to pay you money to not use their AC when its the hottest part of the day.

78 is fantastic outside. Inside it would feel like a reptile house. Not everyone is as heat tolerant as these modern kids seem to be.

I also agree with post 122 about 74F being the warmest tolerable inside temp.

I may live in a joke red state (Nebraska) but at least I can run my AC at a crisp 70-72 degrees on these 100 degree days all summer and my furnace at a warm 74 degrees during the cold winters and my total utility bill has never exceeded $350 a month

Get your shit together Texas

I don't know what part of Texas this stuff is happening in, but where I'm at, I've never experienced a blackout and my company (Reliant) is super cheap. I have a flat rate $150 a month. I guess my HOA has its own generators, but nothing ever happens here. I live 20 mins from Dallas.

Yeah I know a few people who work for Oncor and they have been ramping up their high capacity centers for the last 2 years. I'm looking at one they installed last year as I type this. I'm 50min outside Dallas.

like i said cable, the way a solar array works is it consumes a small amount of electricity and generates a larger amount

without your grid connection you can't flow the electricity in that's required to convert the energy from solar radiance to electricity

the system is usually designed such that the batteries serve as backups for your household, but not for the array itself (things like sump pump and heating are more important)

Yeah, but turning the system on would mean the batteries would work as well, so I'm not sure why this is being stated.

Yeah, but I have power right now. The plan would have been to turn the system on so that the roof generates power while the grid is connected. That way the batteries get charged and then if they start doing rolling blackouts, the house would be powered by the batteries.

  1. Turn system on
  2. Roof generates power and charges the batteries
  3. Rolling power outage happens
  4. House immediately changes to being powered by the batteries instead of the grid, at least with as much power the batteries were able to store in that time period

On your electricity bill, it should tell you the rate you are charged per kilowatt. The AC unit should also display it's wattage. It's easy to work out on paper what the per hour cost is.

For example; AC unit draws 850w/h and electricity costs $0.25kw/h. over a 10 hour block, that's 8.5kw used equals about $2.12. multiply that by 30 days means you are paying about an extra $63 a month.

How is this not considered a state of emergency? The company should not be accepting payment from 26 million customers when they have to ask them, during the hottest part of the day, to cut off they AC and any fans AND to not even go swimming.

I have two people like that in my family but the thing is, they're both overweight. Doesn't seem normal to be sweating profusely in moderate temperatures, whatever the case. I'd get checked out by a doctor

According to the ERCOT charts, today was much better than yesterday.
