You have the ability to free them, but lack context on why they are being contained and tortured. With no way to prove they are good guys trapped by the bad or bad guys trapped by the good. Do you free them or walk away?

I'd create a savestate and free the being, and if it were a bad idea I'd reload

The real problem is, even if they're good, you still have to worry about the people that trapped them there.

Prometheus was a pretty chill dude who was basically punished for helping humans. Hercules got away with freeing him, but that was only because he was Zeus' kid. If just some random hero had freed him instead, you can bet Zeus would have blasted their dick off with lightning and then just strapped Prometheus right back down to his rock.

So if you set them free, you might be fucked no matter whether they're good or bad. And if you don't free them, you just have to worry about them being evil, getting free on their own somehow, and holding enough of a grudge that they come after you to seek revenge for your not helping.

So without knowing the full situation behind everything, and being able to sort through multiple versions of the story to avoid being lied to by someone with an agenda, I'd probably be forced to leave them there.

Unless the immortal was a really hot chick. Then I'd probably feel compelled to help for the promise of rescue nookie.

*looks at the state of the world*
*considers how powerful the being looks*
Whether the being winds up fixing it or destroying it that would be an improvement. If it's not powerful enough to do either then it couldn't make things worse.
I see no downside to freeing it.

In every game I've played, letting a being constrained by very powerful magics, usually ends very, very badly.

Free them, but make a meat pie of them instead. Serve the tasty pie to all of your friends and family at a banquet.

Job well done.

With no context, there's no reason for me to not just look at this person and be like "holy shit, that dude's being tortured. I gotta help."

... Furthermore and all other factors aside, I don't think that someone who had endured that level of torment would be in a fit state to do much harm once freed, so... sure, I'd free them. People are too quick to assume that punishment meted out is punishment deserved, or that once someone has been punished, they are somehow now a danger to be set free. If that's the case, then why punish at all? It's counterproductive.

Yeah, it's a good plot point by which to create narrative-driven combat.

How bad can eternal torment really be? You'd have to get used to it eventually. Eventually you would be like a fish swimming in water.

But sure, I'd push the button. I can't imagine someone would be that evil as to punish someone for helping them, that seems like some made up cartoon trope.
