Wasn't gonna say anything but post 36 made me laugh. I crossed the 100k threshold the first day I transitioned from postdoc (contractor) to employee at my job. And I work for the government which has a long history of underpaying employees compared to the private sector.

If you don't live in a flyover state and work in a competitive area, 100k is not that exclusive of a club. I make less money than anybody else in my friend group from grad school including somebody who is currently a contractor in the same city and another person who lives in Tennessee.

I didnt imply it was easy since I flat out mentioned being a postdoc first (tn: got a phd) and already know that people can't up and move anytime they want and get a high paying job. Conversely if you move to DC and act like 100k is an unusual salary here to anybody working a white collar job, people will think you have brain worms

It'll be okay fake Vegy. You can shut up tho

It's not that it's amusing to see most people say they make over 100k a year, but more the people who are saying it and what their tags are.

I also find it hilarious that people are saying you're poor or not well off if you're only making 100k in a major coastal city. I looked up Boston since Massachusetts is listed as the second highest in median income in the US. The median income in Boston is just 51k. People who think you need 100k to barely survive in a city are living in a bubble.

Anyone in Boston trying to survive with a household income of 51k is barely scraping by(Single apartments start about 2k and 2 bedrooms start pushing 3k). At a household income of about 80k you can probably live in an ok place and not be living absolutely paycheck to paycheck. At 100k you will be able to stop worrying about day to day expenses, but you still won't be able to create much savings without living explicitly frugal.

So then how do 50%+ of the population live below that limit?

Rental units and houses are insane in those markets, but I do think you disregard that some people are grandfathered into certain rents or may own homes from when they were cheaper.

Or people are just paying way more than 30% of their income on housing and still struggling with the rest.

Household income, very few people live alone here and most will have roommates. In certain parts of the city for the young making the least money it is common to have people co-living where the landlord only rents out bedrooms for about 1k a month and you share a common space with 3 to 5 other people. People find a a way, it is just that on a 51k salary your options become very limited and you almost certainly are not doing anything to prepare for your future with that amount.
