Grand Theft Auto was one of the worst offenders of this. Because it ends up like: "Look, Vice City is the next big game!" "Look, San Andreas is the next big game!" "Look, GTA 4 is the next big game!" "Uhh aren't there are least 5 games already" "No those last two didn't really count, this is the next main one!" Mega Man 1-10 for classic, Mega Man I - V for the Game Boy, Mega Man X 1-8, Mega Man Zero 1-4 + ZX, Mega Man Battle Network 1-6, and more. I'm dimly aware that some of these aren't even the same genre, so they probably deserve to be counted as much as Mario Party counts as "Mario," but the franchise has always felt weird to me. And I know it's a JRPG series, but I think Final Fantasy deserves to be mentioned here since the reason it's weirdly numbered -- at least partially -- has nothing to do with usual JRPG shenanigans. Outside of Japan, it went 1-2-3-7...oops, I mean 1-4-6-7. Oops, I mean, there really was a 2, 3, and 5 but you don't get to play those. Okay, now you do.
