Anyway, how about Capcom's 19XX series?

1942 -> 1943 -> 1941 -> 19XX -> 1944 ->1942: Joint Strike

Let's not forget 20XX and 30XX. =p

It might not actually be confusing, but Mega Man's kinda weird because of all the different sub-series. Mega Man 1-10 for classic, Mega Man I - V for the Game Boy, Mega Man X 1-8, Mega Man Zero 1-4 + ZX, Mega Man Battle Network 1-6, and more. I'm dimly aware that some of these aren't even the same genre, so they probably deserve to be counted as much as Mario Party counts as "Mario," but the franchise has always felt weird to me.

And I know it's a JRPG series, but I think Final Fantasy deserves to be mentioned here since the reason it's weirdly numbered -- at least partially -- has nothing to do with usual JRPG shenanigans. Outside of Japan, it went 1-2-3-7...oops, I mean 1-4-6-7. Oops, I mean, there really was a 2, 3, and 5 but you don't get to play those. Okay, now you do. (And then it did JRPG shenanigans later with 10-2, 13-2, a pair of MMOs in the middle, completely replaced one of those MMOs, etc.)

Only the exceptions can be exceptional.
