She had surgery last Wednesday for a hernia in her stomach. She was discharged the same day. Last night she noticed it hurt to breathe so she called the nurse who recommended she go to the ER.

They ran tests on her heart and lungs and found blood in her lungs. Theyre keeping her overnight and then transferring her to another hospital. Shes scared shitless and so am I tbh. I dont know what could have caused it and Im really worried.

Thanks all. I dont know what to do. Im tempted to just jump on a flight there. Shes in Montreal and Im in California. My sister was supposed to take care of her post surgery but she left on Friday to take a weekend at the cottage 3 hours away. Im incredibly upset because I was counting on her being there to take care of her. My brother is also equally useless. He just dropped her off at the ER this morning and left so shes just been alone since last night.

If you are able to, and your husband can watch the baby, you should probably go. There is a greater chance you regret not going than regret going.

Or you could take the baby?

That sounds horrible, I got an infection during a pacemaker surgery 2 years ago, and I had to go back in for 9 days and have 2 more surgeries. I hope everything works out for your mother.Did the surgeon mention this as a possible complication at the pre op consult?

Yes were looking at flights. I would go alone. My daughter is 14 months and the worst age to fly. We actually just came back from Montreal a month ago and took her. It was a rough trip. While there my mom was also hospitalized due to extreme anemia due to the stomach hernia. She had to have a blood transfusion. Its why they ordered to move up the surgery. She was on a wait list for a year before.

I dont really know what was covered with her. She seemed surprised to hear about it. But shes also not the best at understanding things. Shes an immigrant and struggles with the language. My sister should have been present to advocate for her and understand those things. I asked my sister what the discharge instructions were and she dodged the question. I should have known better than to rely on her.

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

Theyre both insanely selfish. I had to beg my sister to stay with our mom after the surgery and she only reluctantly did. I tried to convince her to stay a week but she agreed to 3 days and see how things were. She ditched my mom after the second day. Her reason was she seemed fine

My brother is not speaking to me. He is lashing out at everyone these days and I took his wifes side in a blow out last month. She was crying to me about how she keeps asking him to stop smoking weed (he smokes every 30 minutes and leaves the kids to her) and he told her really horrible things in return. And now he sees me as some traitor or something because I offered her sympathy.

Yeah that sucks, sometimes you just get a bad roll of the dice. My surgeon told me that there would be a 2% chance of infection, but yet it happened. Your sister sounds like a real piece of work, agreeing to take care of her, then deciding to leave while shes recovering? That is messed up.

Well now they said her doctor isnt at the other hospital until Friday and theyre sending her home and told her to go Friday. Im guessing maybe its not as serious as were thinking? I have no idea. My brother is taking her home now and my sister is on the way. I guess Ill play it by ear but if it ends up needing additional surgery or something Ill fly up

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

My mom was discharged same day so she was home since Wednesday evening. My sister left Friday because of the holiday weekend thinking she was fine. My mom went back to the hospital last night and my sister didnt know until I texted her this morning. But still, she shouldnt have left the whole point was to keep an eye on my mom. Shes 68 years old and overweight. Those are all factors for increased complications.

Sure but still pointless. For the sake of my mental health. I know exactly how my sister will react if I say anything and it wont go anywhere because she is just inherently selfish. I mean my sister was my maid of honor at my wedding and she booked a lunch for us the day before with some of our family. And when I told her I still needed her help setting things up and wanted to skip lunch she got angry with me and went to lunch without me. And was upset at me for being upset at her. Thats why I just know there isnt a point. I should have just gone myself in the first place. If it werent for the cost of flights right now and leaving my daughter, I would have been there already. So now Im just planning to go depending on what the doctor says. If its more surgery then I will be there this time.

My sister called the nurse at the other hospital. The one she had the surgery at is in Montreal. The one she went to last night is in a suburb called Laval. The doctors at the Laval one sent her home. My sister called the nurse at the Montreal hospital demanding answers. And the nurse expressed she had no idea why my mom was sent home. They had an ambulance ready to get her and were ready to receive her. The nurse said its life threatening and she needs to be checked in at the Montreal hospital immediately. My sister is on her way to get my mom. Im in utter disbelief. Doctors in my family suggest it could be a pulmonary embolism and her symptoms match.

I would fly out there from the sounds of whats going on.

Well shes at the hospital in Montreal and the doctor looked at the scans and said things looked fine. Some fluids in the lung but they dont think its dangerous. No clot. They will have the surgeon take a look tomorrow. My sister is with her at the hospital thankfully and shes pissed that my brother took her to the hospital in Laval instead of the one she had her surgery at. Which is rich because if she didnt just ditch my mom to go to the cottage, she would have been there to take her herself.

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

Thats so sad and I dont understand either. My mom wasnt the best mom sure. But shes still our mom.

Same happened with my grandma on my dads side. No one was there for her except my mom, who wasnt even her daughter and my parents were divorced by then. One of the last things my grandma told my mom was she loved her like a daughter. My dad and his 3 siblings were barely visiting her at the hospital at all.

Update: All the scans were looked at by a surgeon and all is fine. It looks like fluids and less likely any bleeding or puncture. Possibly due to increased blood flow now that the obstruction in her stomach has been removed. Shes going home today.
