You should realize by now something is very wrong with the AAA game industry when literally the only big game we had this year was Elden Ring and next year, it's only Starfield.

EA seems to have pulled out of AAA games ever since their multiple failures of Battlefield titles. And Ubisoft has probably run out of ideas milking their same old AC titles. Meanwhile their other milked titles like Watch Dogs Legion and Far Cry 6 just went completely under the radar.

At this point game companies are having a hard look at their priorities here. They cant put microtransactions in their games anymore to breakeven on increasingly high expenses, but the same time they cant bank enough to sell big titles on their own.

Calm down guy. They're probably figuring out the transition to current gen. Let's not take our pitchforks yet until year 3 or 4 or when consoles are readily available in retail. I also think Sony confirmed Ragnarok is coming out this year

Let's not forget that a global pandemic also heavily impacted a ton of development cycles.

I do think there's a huge problem with rising development costs/budgets though.

most AAA games no longer have microtransacitons ever since the fiasco that was Battlefront 2. But still, almost all AAA games we've seen in the past 2-3 years have not been well received by critics and sold poorly (dying light 2, cyberpunk etc...) just to name a few off the top of my head; well not like theres even that many games to begin with

Nintendo kinda saw this coming from a mile away and decided to delay the foray into HD development by a whole generation by releasing the Wii. When they did Start doing HD development with Splatoon for the Wii U, they decided to use the drip feed model as a test run to see if the games they release will sell well, and if they do, they'll support them longer.

HD development is hard and expensive, I'm afraid.

it's not an acronym. aaa started as a sarcastic reference to high-budget games, that games journalism ended up adopting as a real term and it stuck

• RDR 2
• Fallout 4
• Any COD since Black Ops
• Elden Ring

Recently purchased a PS2 with all of my favorite childhood classics. I prefer this to buying a PS5.

AAA gaming has been fucking awful for quite some time

AAA definitely are like Hollywood films, but that doesn't even mean they're all bad. There's good and bad ones for both.

none of them were aa good as the prequel, and the only one that wasnt a sequel (Elden ring) sucked too.

Elden Ring had record breaking sales its first month. Got nothing to do with people not buying games

Gaming in general is dead. It died when the PS3/Xbox 360/Wii came out. Any games that came out after the 6th generation of games are all bad games. No exceptions.

it does because it determines the slate of games to come in the future. If a slew of AAA games keep getting thrashed in sales, then the whole point of big budget investments will die. Investors would rather invest in small indie titles then

Yeah, it's sad to see. The community has been very vocal about how much they don't like what PD is doing, but like that video said, now that they have our money, they don't care to listen to our complaints. I grew up with Gran Turismo, but I doubt I'll be buying another game.

All of those games sold well at launch, so I'm not sure how you're arriving at the conclusion that only 1 turned out okay. It's like Hayame Zero said. You just don't count games you don't like.

And I can guarantee that Xenoblade Chronicles 3 won't be delayed. Hell, when it was originally announced, they said September. So it's releasing earlier than expected. Saint's Row likely won't be delayed either.

Yea I hate this argument when I can load up any PC rpg from the 90s and be like holy shit! This is actually fun and well written and well thought out and fun!

There's more than one AAA game releasing this year regardless of what you think about them.

Also we were warned that the pandemic was going to have an impact on Game development. So yeah here it is. A shitload of games were aiming to release this year and got delayed to next year.
