But what was the democrats plan? After the craziness of the Trump years, elect a very moderate candidate, that kept saying how he wanted to reach out to the other side of the aisle?

There are times I think US politics is a game of Good Cop / Bad Cop.

The Republicans seem to be all, "We can take away human rights as we see fit."
The Democrats seem to be, "It sucks but there's nothing we can do about it."
